The Flavour of Taste
Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Do you like pizza? What about fish? Did you know that the senses of taste, smell, and touch all
combine to tell you what the flavor of something is?
Taste:
The taste buds on our tongues detect sweet, salty, sour and bitter tastes. Taste buds for salty
flavours are near the sides and front of our tongues. Taste buds for sweet flavours are at the tips
of our tongues. Bitter flavor taste buds are at the rear of our tongues. Sour taste buds are at the
sides, the saliva in our mouths moistens dry foods so they can be tasted.
Smell:
Food smells reach specific nerves in the upper part of our noses.
These nerves send messages to our brains. Any disorders that affect our sense of smell will also
affect our ability to detect food flavours.
Touch:
Our nose, lips, mouth and throat react to the texture and feeling of the foods we put in our
mouths .peppermint feels cool. Jalapenos feel hot.
Its the combination of these senses working together that tell us what the flavor is. Thats what
causes us to keep eating what were eating or reject it. The flavor is the same , no matter who
eats it, but we learn to like a flavor or not.
