IN THE COUNTRY CALLED ROOF OF THE WORLD- NEPAL

By: Ghulam Mustafa Zaor We group of five ambassadors of HANDS Pakistan visited Nepal as a study and exposure visit, which was cosponsored by Water Aid in Pakistan. It was seven days exposure visit where I along with my team members Maqbool, Khalid, Waseem, and Zahir met six different organizations named as EnvironmentalCampus forConservation Awareness (ECCA), Clean Energy Nepal (CEN), UN HABITAT, and Center for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), Water Aid Nepal, Environment and A group photo along with fellow team members in Public Health Organization (ENPHO). Nepal We truly enjoyed a lot as we witnessed different activities which include field visits, physical observation, and WASH committee's interviews followed by questions and answers session. We also observer some quite major facts such as school timing in all over Nepal is 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Education is prioritized by communities and parental involvement, they have large use of dustbin in all schools, child friendly latrine were found in schools specially for 3-5 years old kids, we saw WASH messages were painted in schools. There was provision of hanging school bag in the each classroom which was made of wooden plank with hooks that was very nice to see that they have very good harvesting system in school for rain water. Construction cost is very high due to high rate of material cement bag which costs almost 800 Nepali Rs, Sand 55 Nepali Rs/cft and Crush 60 Nepali Rs/cft. Lab cost of load bearing building is approx 1800 Nepali Rs/sq-ftand the cost of RCC structure is about 2400 Nepali Rs/Sq-ft most of them prefer construction of RCC structure as they are in earth quake zone and 2 tectonic plates are adjoining in Himalayan range. As they have efficient use of Ferro cement therefore in most of WaterAid project they have constructed Ferro cement underground water tank of capacity 20,000 liters and all water coming in and going out are of gravity flow. Due to power shortage as Nepal is facing approx. 8-10 hours load shading on daily bases, every development sector organization we visited had meeting rooms and offices using maximum sunlight there was not major use of electricity, not even fans as they have used maximum cross ventilation process for energy saving. Nepal has very diverse culture, one should visit it once in a life, we really enjoyed and personally thankful for WaterAid and HANDS to provide us such a marvelous opportunity.

These 20 pupils were divided into four teams comprising five contestants each, they were seated opposite to each other and the viewers were sitting on benches in the corridor of the school.

The caravan of the media delegation by crossing from the HyderabadKarachi super high way arrived at Communal Filtration Plant Yousuf Goth. The filtration plant was fixed in a room by then City District Government in 2004. However for more than two year due to unavailability of proper care and maintenance, the plant became dysfunctional this plant has the capacity of delivering 1000 gallons of filtered drinkable water per day. Now, it has become now fully functional by the efforts of HANDS in collaboration with Water Aid in Pakistan.
