SW Washington, DC 20585 January 14, 2013 Scholarship Review Committee Udall Foundation udall@umd.edu To whom it may concern: It is with great pleasure that I recommend Andrea Doukakis for the 2013 Udall Scholarship. I have had the pleasure of being her STEM Professional Mentor for five months. In this time, Andrea has displayed a high degree of responsibility and ambition by engaging a mentor, and, after getting to know her, I feel lucky to be matched with such a wonderful future STEM professional. She demonstrates her passion and leadership by participating in development opportunities, such as internships, and volunteering for outreach activities. She is also a role model to her peers via her scholastic achievement while managing a healthy work-life balance. Andrea has demonstrated maturity and perspective beyond her years through her commitment to the environment and protection of our natural resources. She not only walks the walk by using re-usable utensils, napkins, and water bottles when we meet for lunch, but also talks the talk by working with other students at her university to teach them about resource conservation and the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Andreas choice of academic discipline speaks plainly of her dedication to the environment, since she has chosen a rigorous University of Maryland program that combines environmental science with public participation (via outreach and policy) and social science. Approaching this subject with a mind for societal issues is critical to affecting change, and I commend her choice to take on this challenge. Andrea is a deserving Udall Scholarship applicant, and I am happy to give her my wholehearted endorsement. Sincerely,

Elizabeth D. Sendich, PhD Energy and Economic Analyst U.S. Energy Information Administration DOE STEM Mentor
