A Commentary on the Genetic Diversity of the 2013 British

Connemara Pony Society Stallion List
The data for this analysis is derived from the BCPS 31 October 2013 printed stallion list (126 Class 1 and 2
stallions), the BCPS frozen semen list and information from the BCPS pedigree database (January 2014). In
addition a database comprising information from nearly every ICCPS countrys stallion list has been used to
provide an international perspective of the value of the UK based stallions.
The BCPS website www.britishconnemaras.co.uk provides an excellent up to date resource for information about
stallions standing at stud in the United Kingdom (UK). Additionally, the pedigree and progeny information
available on this site has made analysis possible.
Stallions are presented below in an order of their usefulness for improving genetic diversity of the international
Connemara Pony population. Each stallion sub-line is presented in italics above the table relating to the stallions
now representing that sire line. One stallion line, Snowball, and a number of sub-lines are exclusive to the UK or
exist in very small numbers elsewhere.
Information on each stallion is presented in table form with the number of BCPS recorded purebred progeny
listed in brackets following the name. The other columns of the table show the maternal line sires (grand-sire,
grand-dams sire, and great-grand dams sire). Any duplication of stallions or prominent mares is noted below the
table. Full pedigrees for all the stallions, except Hungry Hall Top Hat are available on the BCPS database
http://www.britishconnemaras.co.uk/index.php?id=40 .

Discussion
The discussion focuses solely on the value of each stallion from the perspective of maintaining and improving the
genetic diversity of the Connemara pony breed internationally. ICCPS member society Stud Books are closed to
ponies that are not the progeny of parents entered in an ICCPS member society Studbook, thus it follows that
there can only be a reduction in the genetic diversity of the breed over time when lines are lost. Consequent to
the loss of lines is an increase in inbreeding over time. An increase in inbreeding is generally regarded as
detrimental to the health of populations. The quickest way to increase levels of inbreeding is by limiting the
number of sires used and producing high numbers of progeny from small numbers of sires. This report identifies
rare lines that are essential to maintain diversity of the breed is a first step in increasing awareness of the
challenge that lies ahead.

Stallions on the BCPS List

The first significant finding is the appearance of a sixth stallion line descending from Snowball. This line is unique
to the UK with just one representative, Aylesland Polis, who is rising 27 years old. Nearly 70% of the stallions of
the UK listed stallions represent just two stallion lines; Rebel 38% and Heather Bell 30%. Clonkeehan Auratum is
represented in the UK by just four stallions, of which one, Ashfield Alex is retired and does not appear to have
frozen semen available.
Table 2 presents the stallion list in terms of the sire sub-line. Notably there are similarities to the CPBS stallion
list in terms of the major stallion lines represented. In Ireland four major stallion lines represented 55.7% of the
CPBS list. In the UK, these four stallions are represented as follows
Abbeyleix Owen the progenitor of 17% of the BCPS list,
Mervyn Kingsmill 11%,
Hazy Dawn 9%
Ashfield Sparrow 7%.
That is these four stallions direct sire line descendants make up 44% of the BCPS list. There are 28 stallions that
carry both Abbeyliex Owen and Mervyn Kingsmill in their pedigrees, some of which represent other stallion sub-
lines.
Two stallions that feature prominently in the UK, but not Ireland, are
The Fugitive 9%
Thunderbolt 7%.
In Ireland, The Fugitive and Thunderbolt direct male line descendants make up 1.2% and 3.4% of the stallion
population respectively.

Table 2 identifies a number of sub lines that are represented by only one or two stallions. These lines have
limited availability in the UK. However, when considered as part of an international stallion list which combines
most other ICCPS member society countries, their rarity can be assessed from a wider perspective.
It is this order of rarity that is used to group the sub-lines into those at high risk of becoming lost, those with a
moderate risk, those with a low risk of becoming lost and those that are secure.
HIGH RISK SUB-LINES (less than 5 stallions internationally)
Sub-lines which only occur in the UK: Aylesland Polis, Mahogany, and Celtic Truska Prince.
Sub-lines which only occur in the UK and have only one stallion elsewhere in the world: Treeyews Lindisfarne
and Wisbridge Erinmore.
Sub-line with less than 5 stallions internationally: Atlantic Rebel (one of four remaining stallions from his sub-
line. The three other stallions are in Poland, Austria and Australia).
MODERATE RISK SUB-LINES (6-19 stallions internationally)
Sub-line which only occurs in the UK: Keirin of Leam.

LOW RISK SUB-LINES (20 30 stallions internationally)
Bridge Boy, Leam Bobby Finn, Killyreagh Kim, Doon Paddy, Clonjoy, Murphy Rebel and Checkpoint Charlie.

SECURE SUB-LINES (more than 30 stallions internationally)
Thunderbolt, Ashfield Sparrow, Mervyn Kingsmill, Hazy Dawn and Abbeyleix Owen.

Just 20 of the 126 stallions on the current list have sons standing at stud. Only two stallions under 15 years of
age have stallion sons on the list. This is insufficient to ensure against sudden loss of stallions of rare lines or of
outcross lines.
Half of the 22 stallions 20 years of age and older (in 2014) are without a stallion son or grandson and thus several
valuable outcross lines are highly exposed to becoming lost. They are:- Ballymore Luciano, Aille Hasty Bits,
Aylesland Polis, Dunlewey Go Charlie Go, Ennerdale Steele Prince, Dark Stranger, Leys Conker, Timber in the
Mist, Heathers Declan, Lanburn Lieutenant and Western Armada.
Another four stallions 20 years of age and over (in 2014) only have one son or grandson at stud leaving the line
exposed to sudden death of the stallions. These are:- Nyton Village Master, Arrow Javelin, Golden Star and
Village Canal Beau. Nyton Village Master and Arrow Javelin represent valuable outcross lines.
Of the 18 stallions aged between 15 and 19 in 2014 there are 12 who do not have a stallion son listed on the
BCPS list. Amongst these are valuable outcross lines and lines unique to the UK such as Haughmond Midnite
Sterling, Oaklands Cloudbreaker, Hungry Hall Top Hat, Elmore James, Walstead Top of the Morning and Nyton
Master George. Two stallions with only one son representing rare lines are Millfields Fanfare and Silver Fox
Oisin.
Amongst the 10 to 14 year old stallions that represent rare or outcross line and have one or no sons on the BCPS
list are Artful Archer, Rosenaharley Sir Laurence, Crannard Special, Eastlands Terry, Fenrose Bonny Blue,
Millfields Snow Falcon, Nyton Village Squire, Hillymead Cabaret, Lotmolu Countryman, Scottsway Stormy
Sunset and Shipton Merlin.
Amongst the under 10 year old stallions the stallions that represent the lines at most risk are Hearnesbrook New
Moon, Skellorn Fionn, Killaughey Star, Walstead Lynx, Eastlands Harleybrae, Eastlands Hollybrae, Cragsyde
Garnet and Skellorn Prairie Dancer. In particular, Hearnesbrook New Moon is the last but for one stallion in the
USA of this particular line which has been well known for its performance attributes.
Simply put mares of good quality and useful pedigree need to be mated to stallions identified as belonging to
internationally rare and outcross lines.

Twenty-eight stallions do not have any purebred recorded progeny, another 22 have only one recorded progeny
and overall 65 stallions have 4 foals or less. Just 17 stallions have a lifetime total of 30 or more recorded
purebred progeny.
The seventeen stallions with 30 or more purebred progeny are (from highest number of progeny to least):
Spinway Comet, Lockinge Frederick, Castle Gizmo, Oxenholm Matador, Village Canal Beau, Atlantic Ace, Lishmar
Rebel, Rosenaharley Laughris, Canal Lauras Lad, Ballymore Luciano, Bunowen Castle Ri, Arrow Javelin, Mac
Cloonisle, Nyton Village Master, Skellorn Harrison, Silver Fox Oisin and Shipton Merlin. However, it should be
noted that Ballymore Luciano, Mac Cloonisle and Shipton Merlin do not have stallion sons on the BCPS List, and
Arrow Javelin, Village Canal Beau, Nyton Village Master and Silver Fox Oisin only have one son each on the List.
2012-2013 foals
A search of the database for FC (purebred) foals recorded as Alive revealed 130 foals in 2012 and 86 in 2013
making a total of 216 for the two year period.

Further analysis shows that 66 stallions on the current BCPS Stallion List did not produce any recorded purebred
foals. The 68 stallions that left one or two foals during this two year period sired a total of 89 foals. Of the group
that did not have a foal recorded in 2012 or 2013, only 16 stallions were under 10 years of age, the other 50
were mature stallions and include a number who represent rare and valuable outcross lines.
The 26 stallions that left three or more foals during 2012-2013 sired 127 foals. Lecarrow King was the most
prolific, siring 15 foals. Of the 216 foals recorded in 2012 or 2013 46 were sired by 34 stallions that are not on
the current stallion list. These stallions are a mix of foal registered (S3), gelded, deceased or based overseas.
Newtown Pedro, a Frederiksminde Hazy Match son, left five foals before returning to Ireland. Now deceased,
Minsmere Sunseeker left three foals, hopefully one of the colts will be kept entire to continue this line.
When considered from the perspective of stallion sub-lines, 55% of foals recorded in 2012-2013 were sired by
stallions descending from Abbeyleix Owen, Mervyn Kingsmill, Hazy Dawn and Ashfield Sparrow as shown in the
Table below.

Stallion sub-line data for the 34 stallions which are not on the 2013 BCPS Stallion List (Ormond Oliver, Windy
Cove Ranger, Killireagh Kim and Sticky)is included in Table 5 above. Stallion sub-lines which did not have any
foals recorded in 2012-2013 were Atlantic Rebel, Celtic Truska Prince, Doon Paddy, Mahogany and Aylesland
Polis.

Of serious concern is that 55% of the foals born in 2012-2013 descend from just four stallion sub-lines and that
those four stallion sub-lines are over represented in the largest Connnemara producing country, Ireland. This
pattern exacerbates the already noticeable narrowing of the genetic diversity of Connemara ponies
internationally. More frustrating is the possibility that these stallions lines have been mated to mares of
internationally rare and outcross lines that could serve a more valuable role in producing outcross stallions.
Of note is a gelded son of Shipton Teasel, Damerel Duke, who left a colt foal in 2012. This colt, Penstruthal
Murphy, is the last Island Duke sire-line descendant in the northern hemisphere. Possibly he is still entire and
suitable to continue the line, contingent on there being a will to carry on the Island Duke line in the UK.

These twelve stallions produced 36% of the 2102-2013 recorded foals. Individually, the numbers of foals
produced over a two year period is quite modest, as it is for all the stallions in the UK. What needs to be
considered is their contribution to the overall picture of the UK Connemara pony population and the direction to
which it is heading.

Stallion Sub-lines at High Risk of Becoming Lost
Snowball
Aylesland Polis is the sole remnant of the Snowball line. Aylesland Polis has numerous crossbred and purebred
progeny recorded but no stallion sons. Frozen semen is available for UK use but no information is available to
confirm whether this semen has been used successfully.

Wisbridge Erinmore
Wisbridge Erinmore has a particularly useful outcross pedigree with Noble Star twice in generation 4, May Boy

Clonkeehan Auratum, Rebel Wind, Macdara, and the more recently over used Irish stallions. He had 118
recorded progeny and now has three sons and a grandson listed on the BCPS Stallion List. The eldest son,
Hobbans Barn Owl, born in 1974 is retired.

Conclusion
It is heartening to see the BCPS Stallion List includes a significant number of stallions that do not include any of
the four over used stallions identified in the report on the 2013 CPBS Stallion List (i.e. Abbeyleix Owen, Hazy
Dawn, Mervyn Kingsmill and Ashfield Sparrow) in the first four generations of their pedigrees. The lines in the
UK that are rare or unique are sire line descendants of Snowball, Keirin of Leam, Mahogany, Wisbridge Erinmore,
Celtic Truska Prince, Treeyews Lindisfarne and Atlantic Rebel. This makes the UK a potentially easily accessible
source of outcross lines for Irish breeders and others elsewhere in Europe if they can find available colts from
these lines.

However, the four stallions, Abbeyleix Owen, Hazy Dawn, Mervyn Kingsmill and Ashfield Sparrow, which have
now been identified as the most numerous stallion lines internationally, not just in Ireland, are now over
represented in the UK .
The serious concern is that 55% of the foals born in 2012-2013 descend from just four stallion sub-lines and that
these four stallion sub-lines are over represented in the largest Connnemara producing country Ireland. This
pattern exacerbates the already noticeable narrowing of the genetic diversity of Connemara ponies
internationally. More frustrating is the possibility that these stallions lines have been mated to UK mares of
internationally rare and outcross lines that could serve a more valuable role in producing outcross stallions.
The Sub-lines at high and moderate risk of becoming lost need to be bred to mares of sufficient quality to
produce colts with stallion potential. It is preferable that the pedigrees of these mares contain little or none of
the secure sub-line sires.
Owners of stallions identified in the high and moderate risk groups could contribute to the retention of these
sub-lines by arranging for semen to be collected and frozen as a means of insurance against the loss of their
stallions prior to a replacement son or grandson becoming available. Many of the high and moderate risk
stallions are aged, increasing the level of risk.
There must be a change in practice to ensure the internationally rare and valuable outcross lines found in the UK
have a reasonable chance of continuing on into the future to benefit the international Connemara population.
What role do UK breeders plan on playing in the international Connemara Pony world? The potential is
present to produce outcross stallions of value to every Connemara breeding country if only they would grasp
that opportunity. Currently, the fashionable overused stallion lines of Ireland dominate foal production with
the consequence that the UK Connemara pony population is increasingly mirroring that of Ireland. Losing the
long established uniqueness of the UK Connemara population will be detrimental to the international
Connemara pony population.
