Jared Strader 1 23 August 2012 MAE 342 Assignment 1 Pr.

1 1) The article for the JetBlue hydraulic malfunction is attached. 2) The aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, is most likely not at fault for the failure of two hydraulic systems. The failure is probably due to maintenance issues. Often, preventative maintenance is planned, and the company may have cut costs and refrained from replacing or repairing the appropriate parts until the parts do not work. 3) The consequences were not fatal. The backup systems and the third hydraulic system assured safety for the passengers, but the failure caused passengers much panic and terror during the four-hour detour circling the airport. 4) Since the manual describes double hydraulic failure as improbable in operation, there could be some issues concerning the code of ethics and the actual cause of the failure. If the cause is not maintenance, the engineering are probably at fault. Aircrafts in the past have experienced two and three hydraulic systems failing in operation, and it is likely that the engineers know this information. The Code of Ethics for Engineers states that engineers should avoid misrepresentation and omitting material facts (III/3/a). There could be a small violation on this point. Pr. 2 1) The main difference between a machine and mechanism is that a mechanism transmits motion and a machine transmits motion and energy. The basic function of a mechanism is to transmit or modify motion into some desired pattern and typically develop very low forces and little power. Machines typically contain mechanisms that are designed to provide significant forces and transmit significant power. 2) The steps of the design process according to Norton are: 1. Identification of Need 2. Background Research 3. Goal Statement 4. Performance Specifications 5. Ideation and Invention 6. Analysis 7. Selection 8. Detailed Design 9. Prototyping and Testing 10. Production 3) Axiomatic design is an approach to design in which there are four domains: customer domain, functional domain, physical domains, and the process domain. These domains

Jared Strader 2 23 August 2012 MAE 342 range from what to how in design. This approach presents two axioms, which must be satisfied. These axioms are: 1. Maintain the independence of the functional requirements 2. Minimize the information content Axiomatic design distinguishes between what must be achieved and how it will be achieved. 4) Kilogram-mass is the base unit of mass in the SI system (mks) which is not dependant on local gravity. A slug is the derived unit of mass in the U.S. foot-pound-second (fps) system; it is dependant on local gravity. A blob is the derived unit of mass in the U.S. inch-pound-second (ips) system; it is dependent on local gravity. Pound-mass is a derived unit of mass, but it is derived from a slightly different form of Newtons equation than a blob or slug. A pound-mass is numerically equivalent to a pound force. When using pound mass in the standard form of Newtons equation, we must divide by the gravitational constant, gc.
