1.2 Initial Actions

1. Verify the problem. 2. Check that the printer paper path is clear of foreign matter such as staples, paper clips, and paper scraps. 3. After you have identified the problem symptom, check the following items: The printer is connected to a wall power outlet, and the outlet is supplying the correct voltage. The printer power cord is not frayed or broken. The printer is correctly grounded. The printer is in an appropriate operating environment, with no extremes of heat or humidity. The printer is on a level and stable surface.

Initial Actions
1. VERIFY AND CLASSIFY THE PROBLEM. 2. REPAIR THE PROBLEM.

1.3 Corrective Actions

1. If the printer has an obvious failure or fault, you can go directly to the appropriate Repair Procedures in Section 4 or Troubleshooting in Section 2 and begin corrective action. 2. If the fault is related to Image Quality, go directly to Section 3 to correct the problem. 3. After all corrective actions have been made, perform Final Actions.

1.4 Final Actions

1. Run Test Prints to evaluate print quality. 2. Refer to 2.2.7 Print Quality Problems and correct any print quality defects. 3. Correct any secondary problems (return to Corrective Actions, if necessary). 4. Reinstall the machine covers. 5. Clean the machine. 6. Verify printer operation with the printer connected to a host computer.

1.5 Maintenance Approach

The diagnostic information in this manual leads you to the correct replaceable unit or part. Use the error indicator charts, symptom index, service checks, and diagnostic aids to determine the symptom and repair the failure.

The user is directed, in the Printer Control program, to perform the head to head and bi-directional alignment adjustments after replacing a print cartridge.

After you complete the repair, perform tests as needed to verify the repair.

2.1 Getting Started

To check the basic printer functions, print a Test Print. Observe printer behavior during the tests to enable fault isolation. In most cases, the printer will not have a print head installed when the printer is returned for service. In this case, Section 3 Image Quality May not apply.

2.1.1 Control Panel LED Indications

Error indications are displayed by the LED indicator on the control panel. If your printer displays an error indication during operation, refer to 2.1.2 Error Indicator Table and take the necessary action.

2.1.2 Error Indicator Table

Observing the 3 LED indicators will provide a visual indication of the printer status. Refer to the Error Indicator table below to determine the printer status as indicated by the LED operation. Status LED 2 (Paper) Off Symptom LED 3 (Power) On Action

LED 1 (Ink) Off Blinking Fast On

Printer is idle. Wrong Print Head or no Print Head. Printer error condition - low ink.

Refer to 2.2.2 Power Problems. Check/replace print head. Replace Print head Cartridge (Refer to Section 4).

Blinking Fast

One of following errors: a. Out of paper b. Paper jam a. Add paper. b. Refer to 2.3.5 Paper Feed Service Check. Replace ink cartridge(s). a. Install new print head cartridge. b. Install proper cartridge. c. Refer to 2.3.3 Carriage Service Check. d. Refer to 2.1.3 Power On Self Test. Replace IOT Control PWB.

Troubleshooting

2.1.3 Power On Self Test

The printer performs a software-controlled Power On Self Test (POST) when power is initially applied. Unplug and then reconnect the power cord. This will initiate the POST routine. If the printer resets and is operational, the problem was one that was temporary. If the problem still exists, the 3 LED indicators will provide a visual indication of the printer status. Refer to 2.2.1 POST Symptoms and take the necessary action.

2.1.4 Printer Tests

The POST test cannot determine problems that may be encountered during printing or situations where ink cartridge maintenance is required. To check these functions, the printer should be tested by running an internal and external print test. a. Internal Print Test. Running a Print Test will demonstrate the operational status of the printer. Run a print test (refer to Section 6, Print Head Test) to verify printer operation, print cartridge alignment and printer setup information. b. External File Print. To verify that the printer can print from an external source, a file should be sent from a host computer. This will check that the associated cabling is functioning properly as well as ensuring that the handshaking between the printer and the host computer is correct. To do this, connect the computer to a host computer with the appropriate printer drivers installed. Then send a print job from the host computer to the printer.

2.1.5 Printer Operation and Evaluation

Evaluate the results of these tests to determine whether the printer is operating properly and, if not, which printer functions are not operating correctly. Refer to 2.2 Symptom Tables based on the observed problems.

Troubleshooting

DocuPrint M750/M760

2.2 Symptom Tables

The symptom tables provide guidance in troubleshooting the printer, based on the results of running a test print or on overall visual operating performance of the printer during a file print from an external computer.

2.2.1 POST Symptoms

To reinitiate the POST routine, press and hold the Resume button. If the test print runs successfully, the error was temporary. If the error remains, unplug and reconnect the power cord to run the test again.

If the POST test fails, the LED indicators blink or light to indicate the nature of the failure. Refer to
2.1.2 Error Indicator Table for error indications. Take the action indicated. If the error condition still exists, Refer to Section 4, Replace the IOT Control PWB.

2.2.2 Power Problems

Symptom Printer not powered up. Printer does not respond. Go to 2.3.1 Power Service Check. Action

Action The pump assembly operates any time the Advance Motor operates. Disconnect the tubing from the maintenance station. Check that the pump is creating a vacuum of 280 mm + 50 mm. Also, check that the pump is exhausting ink into the waste pad. Verify that the tubing is not clogged or pinched. Replace parts as necessary. Check the maintenance station for worn or broken parts. A worn cap can cause the print cartridge nozzles to dry and clog. Check for loose or worn cap. Check cleaning operation as follows: 1. Weigh the print head. 2. Install print head in printer. 3. Clean the print head (refer to Quick Reference Guide for procedure). 4. Remove the print head. 5. Weigh the print head. 6. The difference between the original weight in step 1 and the weight in step 5 must be > 0.26 grams. If not, replace maintenance station (PL 1.4).
