The
Houston
Alumnae
Chapter
is
among
several
area
affiliates
of
Delta
Sigma
Theta
Sorority,
Inc.
presenting
an
Affordable
Care
Summit
and
Health
Fair
with
the
Harris
County
Area
Agency
on
Aging,
Americorps
VISTA
Volunteers
and
the
Metropolitan
Christian
Methodist
Episcopal
Church.
The
health
fair
featuring
Affordable
Care
Act
insurance
enrollment
and
Medicare
health
plan
disenrollment
will
be
from
9
a.m.
to
3
p.m.
on
Saturday,
Jan.
18,
2014
at
Metropolitan
CME
Church,
8955
South
Freeway
(Texas
State
Highway
288)
at
Reed
Road.
The
event
will
include
free
flu
shots
and
other
immunizations
as
well
as
health
screenings.
Participants
in
need
also
will
receive
a
free
bag
of
groceries
from
the
Houston
Food
Bank.
Several
Houston-area
Delta
Sigma
Theta
chapters
are
involved
with
this
health
fair.
They
include:
Houston
Alumnae
Chapter,
Bay
Area
Houston
Alumnae
Chapter,
North
Harris
County
Alumnae
Chapter,
Suburban
Houston-Fort
Bend
Alumnae
Chapter
and
Eta
Beta
Chapter
(Prairie
View
A&M
University).
Delta
Sigma
Theta
Sorority,
Incorporated,
founded
in
1913,
is
a
private,
not-for-profit
service
organization
of
predominantly
black,
college-educated
women
committed
to
transforming
lives
and
impacting
society.
More
than
200,000
women
have
joined
the
organization,
which
has
more
than
1,000
chapters
in
the
United
States
and
abroad.
The
Houston
Alumnae
Chapter
of
Delta
Sigma
Theta
Sorority,
founded
in
1927,
was
the
first
black
Greek
letter
organization
to
establish
a
chapter
in
Houston.
In
1981,
the
chapter
created
One
Delta
Plaza
Educational
Center
(ODPEC),
an
IRS-recognized
501(c)(3)
community
foundation,
to
expand
its
outreach
efforts
and
oversee
the
two-story
property
at
3333
Old
Spanish
Trail.
Houston
Alumnaes
esteemed
members
have
included
Congresswoman
Barbara
Jordan
as
well
as
several
past
and
present
regional
and
national
Delta
officers.
Today,
more
than
400
Houston
Alumnae
members
continue
to
implement
the
sisterhood,
scholarship
and
service
demonstrated
by
Deltas
22
visionary
founders.
Led
by
Chapter
President
Tia
Simmons,
this
commitment
continues
with
Preserving
the
Legacy
Through
Passion,
Purpose
and
Public
Service
the
theme
of
the
2013-2015
biennium.
