The year may have just gotten
underway, but that hasnt stopped
the township of Shamong from
planning a variety of capital im-
provements and initiatives.
According to township admin-
istrator Sue Onorato, Shamong
received a $126,000 municipal
parks grant from Burlington
County in 2013 that will be used
for improvements at the Dingle-
town complex and Stony Creek
park.
Well continue to improve
those parks and fields to make
them safer, more accessible,
Onorato said. It will include
repaving and painting projects.
The winter weather raised an-
other concern for the township
the state of its two snowplow
trucks.
Well definitely be looking
into the replacement of our two
trucks this year. One truck is a
1991 model and the other is a
1994, Onorato said. It speaks to

the great job our public works de-
partment has done in maintain-
ing and caring for those vehicles
for them to have lasted as long as
they have.
Onorato said the department
has run into maintenance issues
this winter with breakdowns and
the trucks not starting.
The township committee has
already authorized a shared serv-
ice agreement with Tabernacle to
obtain a grant from the state De-
partment of Transportation.
Once grant approval is received, a
paving project on the west side of
Tuckerton Road between Forked
Neck Road and Old Indian Mills
Road is expected to begin.
Improving the townships in-
frastructure has been a theme of
the townships committee meet-
ings, as the committee has held
discussions in regard to other
road repairs the township could
afford to do under this years
budget. Onorato said that while
they appreciate community con-
cern and suggestions on what
work should be done, Shamong
would be basing its decisions on
the analysis of the township engi-
neer and the knowledge of the
public works crew.
They have the best day-to-day
working knowledge of what is in
most need of repair throughout
the township, Onorato said. We
will be using their recommenda-
tions when figuring out what proj-
ects need to be completed first.
The township already used a
DOT grant to repave and repair
Old Indian Mills Road. That proj-
ect is ongoing and expected to be
completed in the upcoming
months.

As part of her broader 2014
Burlington County health and
wellness initiative, Burlington
County Freeholder Director Leah
Arter announced that the
Burlington County Medical Re-
serve Corps has been awarded a
$20,000 Medical Reserve Corps
Challenge Award from the Na-
tional Association of County and
City Health Officials in partner-
ship with the Office of the Sur-
geon General. The award will be
used to train MRC members to
train daycare providers in imple-
menting the CATCH Early Child-
hood program. CEC is designed to
nurture a love of physical activi-
ty, provide an introduction to
classroom-based gardening and
nutrition and encourage healthy
eating in children age 3-5.
This important award will
allow us to better prevent obesity
and chronic diseases amongst our
preschool children, allowing
them to live longer healthier
lives, Arter said.
Nearly 200 MRC units from
across the United States complet-
ed the application, and the top 29
most promising applicants re-
ceived awards totaling nearly
$600,000 to implement the pro-
posed initiatives. MRC as Part-

early this year.
The MRC Challenge Award funds MRC
units to carry out innovative projects in
their communities that can be replicated
on a national level and align with one of
four focus areas: community resilience,
chronic disease prevention, partners for
empowered communities and mental and
emotional well-being.
The MRC as Partners in Preventions
overall goal is to reduce the risk of obesity
and to increase fruit and vegetable con-
sumption, physical activity and foster a
healthier environment while children
learn and play by implementing the
CATCH program.
The Coordinated Approach to Childrens
Health is not a new program, but how the
program will be implemented in Burling-
ton County is innovative. By utilizing the
Burlington County MRC, we are expanding
public health outreach in combating child-
hood obesity and chronic disease. The
MRC will be used to empower daycare cen-
ters and preschools to implement changes
and introduce new curriculums to better
address the nutrition and physical activity
needs of children in their care.
The MRC will be a free resource avail-
able to these facilities to instill change and
positive outcomes in our youngest popula-
tion that will have a lifelong impact in obe-
sity and chronic disease prevention.

A
tlantic City has been a hub of
economic development for
New Jersey since the 1970s.
The citys casinos have long been the
states defining attraction to out-of-
state guests, even more so than its ex-
pansive beaches, which are a huge
summertime draw.
AC has been a focal point of develop-
ment, tourism and marketing, and has
generously repaid the favor in the
form of revenue and taxes to the state.
But a disturbing trend that began al-
most 10 years ago continues today: Peo-
ple are spending less and less money at
Atlantic City casinos every day.
The Center for Gaming Research at
UNLV reports that, since 2006, total
revenue at Atlantic City casinos has
dropped a whopping 45 percent. Casi-
nos brought in $2.9 billion last year,
down from $3.1 billion in 2012 the sev-
enth straight year that revenue num-
bers were down from the year before.
In the wake of surrounding states
approving expanded gambling offer-
ings at racetracks and standalone casi-
nos, New Jersey no longer has the East
Coast monopoly on gambling that it
had even 10 years ago. No longer do
gamblers have to choose between New
Jersey, Las Vegas and, to a small de-
gree, Connecticut; they can now stay
closer to home in Pennsylvania,
Delaware and even Maryland to place
a bet.
Gov. Christie and other legislators
have recognized this alarming trend
and have focused their efforts on alter-
native forms of gambling to pump fuel
into Atlantic Citys fire. Online gam-
bling began Nov. 21 with casinos re-
porting $8.4 million in related revenue
since that time and the push for le-
galized sports betting continues.
But other surrounding states are al-
ready following suit in their own push
for online gambling, and New Jerseys
case for legalizing sports gambling in
the state doesnt look promising.
So it seems about time to look else-
where outside of gambling as a fu-
ture source of significant revenue for
the state.
If Atlantic City casinos continue to
lose revenue, and if online gambling
doesnt make up those losses, then the
state as a whole will suffer.
What else is out there? What else is
available? What else can attract
tourists all year round?
It might not be possible to answer
these questions now, but lawmakers
need to recognize the need to come up
with a revenue solution soon. Our
states long-term economic health
could depend upon it.
in our opinion
A gambling alternative?
New Jersey needs to find a new source of revenue, not a new form of gambling
Your thoughts
Should New Jerseys tourism industry
continue to rely so heavily on gambling?
Or should the state search for alternative
revenue? Share your thoughts on
the subject, and others, through a letter
to the editor.

It was great, it was where I

Now in his sixth year at the

freshmen to seniors was a quick
one.
I cant believe how fast it has
gone, Knecht said. Its been a
quick four years for sure watch-

Hearing the announcement of
him winning the award go over

for Knecht.
It was really nice. They were

Knecht said. The students really
got into it and were excited for
me, which was great.
