ZUMBROTA Eclectic songwriter and musician Peter Mulveys latest album is an argument for the Great American Songbook not as a musty tome but as a living, breathing document. He makes his case in concert at Crossings on Saturday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. Josh Harty opens. Having built a reputation over the past 20 years as a brilliant technician, Mulvey who often travels by bicycle to his gigs has shared the stage with such artists as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani DiFranco, and Indigo Girls. His 15th record takes a vivid, open approach. At the heart of The Good Stuff, is a sequence in which a bluesy take on the Ellington classic Mood Indigo is sandwiched between Tom Waits obscure Green Grass, lovingly relocated from the guttural, and a charmingly haphazard rendition of Jolie Hollands Old Fashioned Morphine. Id put those three artists in the same drawer in the big bureau of songwriters, says Mulvey. Theyre from different eras, and considered different animals jazz composer, bohemian beat poet, Americana revivalist but to my ear theyre the same, in that theyre always trying to write a timeless song. Whether recorded or live, Mulveys mirthful, gravelly baritone is front and center from moment one. Twenty-odd years on the road, performing songs from his own catalog and from a vast, varied, and deep well of classic and obscure covers, has shaped an artist capable of divining the heart of a song, of being alert to where the moment can lead. To each rendition, he brings the soul of a singer, a light touch in a heavy world. Hartys unique blend of American music has become a must-hear for those who keep the tradition of country, blues and folk close to their hearts. Born and raised on the plains of North Dakota with a father who served his town as a preacher and police chief and Hartys music mentor, Harty continues a family tradition of guitar playing. Hartys live shows prove that good story telling combined with journeyman musicianship is as American as music gets. Tickets are $18 in advance, or $20 at the door. To reserve tickets, visit www.crossingsatcarnegie.com, call 507-732-7616 or stop in to Crossings at 320 East Avenue in Zumbrota.
