SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY BOSTON THE AWARD-WINNING STUDENT NEWSPAPER

Would Martin Luther King Jr. be proud of Suffolk?

Melissa Hanson News Editor
When Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at a Ford Hall Forum at Suffolk University in 1956, he said, negroes everywhere should refuse in a nonviolent sense to cooperate with the evils of segregation. The message of equality today now also includes, gender, sexual orientation, and religion, among others. But would our progress make Dr. King proud? Some professors and faculty at Suffolk believe the university is not fully equal, but some students say that among the diverse body of undergraduates on Beacon Hill, equality is not a challenge. In 1956, King said, we have come a long, long, way but we have a long, long way to go, at the Ford Hall Forum. In 2014, Suffolks Reverend Amy Fisher echoed those thoughts. Fisher said to really recognize King and fulfill his hopes and dreams for the country, Suffolk would have to define what his standards are and which ones we have to live up to.

suffolkjournal.net
Robert Bellinger, the director of black studies at Suffolk, said in order to live up to Kings dreams, the university would have to be analyzed and completely restructured. We would have to see more substance in day to day activities, said Bellinger. Issues of respect for diversity are still being struggled with. Bellinger said that if the Suffolk community examined the movement toward equality in recent years, the results might be disappointing.

to follow, said Evans of Davis in a telephone interview. Just hours before his swearing in ceremony last Friday, Evans told the Suffolk Journal about five of his goals as commissioner. First, he hopes to increase community policing, an item which also appears on Walshs agenda, by having more officers on foot and on bike. Going hand-in-hand with that, he plans to reduce violence within Bostons neighborhoods. Evans also hopes to lower the number of guns on the streets as well as increase homeland security. One goal he has already begun working on is adding diversity to the department. Evans, who is not a fan of being in the limelight, gives Suffolk credit for helping him get to where he is now. He began his college career in Hawaii, but enrolled at Suffolk because he was homesick. Remembering the class on drugs and alcohol, Evans said, I always look back and thought that was an eye-opener. Other classes that stuck with him were government courses with Professor Burg and juvenile justice with Professor Morton,

William Evans remembers riding the bus from South Boston to downtown for classes at Suffolk University in the early 1980s. He would walk by the State House on his way to campus, where he earned a degree in government. It wasnt as big and beautiful as it is now, said Evans, 55, whose journey through college was of a traditional Suffolk commuter student. The South Boston native went in in the morning and left in the afternoon. One class that particularly struck Evans was on drugs and alcohol. Professor Archer, as he recalled, took the class to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and from there, Evans knew he wanted to be a Boston Police officer. But, he said he never expected to be named commissioner. Evans has served the BPD for 33 years, and was named commissioner as one of Mayor Martin Walshs first acts in office earlier this month. He was named acting commissioner in the fall after Edward Davis resigned. I realize I have a tough act

Avellone noted that 40 percent of the state budget, healthcare spending consumes and said that he would look

to cut wasteful spending and redirect the money to more urgent needs. He emphasized that Massachusetts should adapt to meet the needs of the industries of tomorrow. That means promoting STEM and training in fields like healthcare, renewable energy, and information technology, he said. Regarding transportation, Avellone considers the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authoritys South Coast Rail Project a high priority, and necessary for a modern economy and better quality of life. Expanding the Green Line and upgrading the MBTAs rolling stock are also important goals, he said, though he noted that funding

such initiatives might be difficult. As a Selectman, Avellone successfully lowered his towns costs through two rounds of collective bargaining with unions. When an audience member said that the state faced huge unfunded liabilities, Avellone agreed, but stressed that that problem hurts our cities and towns much more than the state itself. Don Berwick, another Democrat in health care, kicked off the series Jan. 15, sharing his background and explaining his ideas with a crowd of nearly 50 people. Berwick is known nationally for his short tenure as the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMMS).

In Washington, there has been an erosion of ... the sense that government is by us, for us, and that we can use it to help, Berwick said. President Obama appointed him to the administrator of CMMS during Congress recess, a controversial move that drew criticism from Republicans. The negative attention, he said, hampered his ability to work with Republicans. Frustrated, he resigned after less than 18 months. Berwick has made health care policy his main campaign issue, saying there is no better place in the world for healthcare than Massachusetts. However, the state needs to decrease its healthcare costs, which were the only section of funding from the government,

which did not decrease, he claimed. His other goals include education system reform, and ensuring that students in poverty still have access to education that will get them a good-paying job. Berwick graduated from the Harvard College and Harvards Medical and Kennedy Schools. After 22 years as a pediatrician and a career as a VP at Harvard Community Health Care, he founded and directed a nonprofit called the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 1989. Berwick said that growing up in a small town instilled values in him that shaped his political views. For more information and a speaker schedule, visit Suffolks webpage.

Alternative winter break leaves students wanting a second taste of El Salvador

Ellie Hawkins Journal Staff
One of the most competitive activities for Suffolk University students is the alternative break program. The S.O.U.L.S Center for Community Engagement plans trips for student throughout the country during spring break and to El Salvador during winter break. There are multiple trips during spring break, but only one during winter. The El Salvador trip was started in honor of Joe Moakley and the work that he did during that countrys civil war. The civil war lasted for 12 years and during that time there was a great amount of reported injustice brought upon civilians and prisoners of war. Abby Kim, a senior, said the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Kim said she was able to find inner peace through her experience on the trip. The trips focus is to learn more about the civil war and help preserve its memory. There were 18 students and faculty that journeyed to El Salvador, staying in Suchitoto at Centro Arte para la Paz. They spent 10 days in this area, half of the time visiting museums group also recieved a thank you from Selina, Rosa and from Habitat for Humanity. The trip this year was different than previous years. The class that was associated with the trip was changed from a history class to a government class. The government class was only a month long from November to the end of the semester. The first time I went, I left my heart in El Salvador. It's difficult to describe love. I feel I can never justify the experience and can never explain it to my satisfaction, said Thay Thao, a senior who attended the trip for his second time. The people of El Salvador are so resilient; they are so captivating, calm and friendly to the extreme. They devote themselves entirely to their task at hand and open their arms to everyone, no matter who they may be. To say that El Salvador has changed me would be an understatement. The faces of the people Ive met in El Salvador will forever be engraved in my heart. These are the reasons I had to return to the beautiful country of El Salvador. Que Viva El Salvador!

The womans name was Rosa and along with her daughter Selinas help, they assisted students in building their house out of mud adobe bricks. El Salvador is a high-risk country to live in and due to this Rosas house got a crack through the middle after an earthquake. This resulted in her decision to build another house. Through Habitat for Humanity she was able to buy the materials for her new home for between $7,000 and $8,000. The group from Suffolk was there to help build her house. Even though the days were hot, students were almost able to finish the house. They helped clear the ground for the sidewalks, carried buckets of sand to level the ground in the house, built the walls of the house and painted it before their time was up. All that was left to do was to attach doors, windows, a roof, and cement poured onto the floors outside and inside the home. The two men who were working on the house said a meaningful and heart-breaking thank you to the group. They said that they were so grateful because otherwise they would have been building the house, pick axing and moving sand and dirt all by themselves. The

What can happen often is that people fall into complacency and make someone an icon and feel the need to do something every year, but it doesnt necessitate generally. Because of that complacency, Bellinger believes there has not been a huge movement toward diversity. He acknowledged that the country has grown in equality since the 1960s, but that it is not time to pat ourselves on the back. The idea has always been at Suffolk, said Chief Diversity Officer Nicole Price. I think we are making the effort and were getting there. However, Price did say she believes the university could do better. I think it varies what circles youre in, said Price, who noted that professors and faculty probably have a different experience than students. Karen Diaz and Shannon Wade, both sophomores, believe that Suffolk is not just diverse, but also equal. Diaz said all around campus she sees that people of all color are friends. King would be proud, she said. There are so many different types of people here, said Wade, at least five different types in every classroom. Wade did acknowledge that there are some people who discriminate against others on the Suffolk campus, but said it doesnt define the college.

Junior Siobhan Sullivan said Suffolk is more diverse than other colleges in the area, and students treat each other with equality. The majority of people make an effort, said Price. In order to live up to Kings expectations fully, the university should do two things. Open dialogue and ask questions, said Price. Open discussions would allow people to have a better understanding of how to be equal, and would deter curiosity, she said. The second thing, Price said, was to put diversity in our goals and strategic planning for the future. Bellinger said, to really begin to move toward respect to all individuals...in order to move to a place where everyone feels respected. It would mean rethinking the university from top to bottom. what your parents are doing. Take college as serious...its not about socializing. When Evans thinks of his proudest moments on the BPD force, a few come to mind. He remembers escorting presidents from their planes when they arrived at Logan International Airport, working duty at Fenway Park during Red Sox games, Occupy Boston, and of course, last years Boston Marathon. It was a terrible tragedy, Evans said, but as far as something thats always going to stick in your mind, nothing is going to top that.

While taking his classes at Suffolk, Evans worked as a cadet with the BPD, starting his career. The department was good with flexibility, he said, making sure I got my education done. If given the chance, Evans said he would definitely consider teaching at Suffolk. Plans for all arenas currently in construction for FIFAs World Cup are seriously behind schedule, BBC reported. The first games are scheduled to take place this June, and half of the arenas where they will be hosted have not been completed, including the one where the opening match in Sao Paulo will take place. Brazil is being closely inspected by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and is in jeopardy of losing the privilege to host the games. FIFA and the Parana state government have promised to inject an extra $17 million in hopes of meeting deadlines, according to BBC, despite protests against the wasted resources being used on the World Cup. FIFA will announce on Feb. 18 if there has been any changes in its decision.

President Francois Hollandes personal life has been brought to the spotlight after he was seen at an apartment in Paris with actress Julie Gayet, The New York Times reported. After claiming he would not repeat the actions of former president Nicolas Sarkozy, of being tabloid fodder, his partner Valerie Trierweiler was sent to the hospital for over a week after hearing the news. Pictures were released by the magazine Closer of Hollande arriving to the apartment with the 41-year-old actress. Hollande has served as president of France for 20 months and ended a 25-year relationship with the mother of his children seven years ago. He is scheduled to meet with President Obama next month, and it is not clear if Trierweiler will accompany him.

China
A link between American demands for Chinese goods and air pollution has been found by a prominent American science journal, according to The New York Times. Strong winds across the Pacific Ocean can carry air pollutants associated with the production of goods in China for the American market. Although importing goods from China may create less pollution for the east coast of the U.S., the west coast is affected by the pollutants that are created from factories. As the air quality of China decreased, the life expectancy of its people has declined and sparked an increase of illnesses such as asthma, cancer, emphysema, and heart and lung disease, NYT reported. Cities such as Los Angeles may be exposed to higher levels of ozone than the ones the federal government deems safe.

Uganda
A bill that would increase jail time for homosexual acts in Uganda was rejected by President Yoweri Museveni, but not with the intention of protecting the LGBT of the country. Musevenis spokesman shared that the president believes that parliament illegally passed the bill, and gays and lesbians are sick people who need help, CNN reported. The proposal included punishments similar to those in Russia, such as fines and imprisonment, but Ugandas lawmakers pushed to enforce life in jail. Under current laws, homosexuality is illegal in Uganda, as in most African countries, and punishable by 14 years to life in prison, according to CNN. David Bahati, the lawmaker that proposed the bill, said, This is a piece of legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional family here in Africa, and also protect the future of our children.

Ariel Sharon, controversial master of war and politics, dies at 85

Matt Bacon International Editor
The news of the death of Ariel Sharon did not come as a surprise to many around the world. The former Israeli politician and general had been in a coma since 2006 and his condition was rapidly deteriorating. His death on Jan. 11, however, still elicited the same polarized and controversial reactions to the man who had been a key figure in the Israeli military and political system since the countrys inception in 1948. Sharon was a controversial figure both within Israel and around the world. Seen by many as a hawk who would spare no human, economic, or political expense to defend Israel, he left behind a confusing legacy as his policy in later years shifted from one of defending Israel strictly through military means, to one of using negotiation and concessions to attempt to build a lasting peace for everybody. Sharon rose to prominence in the Israeli war for independence in 1948, where he earned a reputation as an effective battalion commander and was nearly killed after being seriously wounded in battle. In 1953, he was appointed by Israeli founding prime minister, David BenGurion, to form and command Unit 101, a special forces unit within the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) whose exclusive role was to operate behind enemy lines. Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Sharon played a prominent role in the Israeli military and its recurring conflicts with Egypt. During this period, he solidified his reputation as a soldiers commander, fighting alongside his men and often disobeying orders to pull off risky maneuvers. In the 1956 Sinai War with Egypt, this backfired against him when the brigade he was commanding infiltrated too far behind enemy lines and was ambushed by Egyptian forces, suffering many casualties and damaging his reputation in the military. In what became a common theme throughout his career, Sharon rebounded from the incident and was in command of Israeli troops during the 1967 war with Egypt, leading Israeli forces to a monumental victory. In the early 70s as commander of Israeli forces in the entire south of the country, he established the first Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory. 16-1. Sharon was the only member who voted in his favor. For the rest of the 80s and 90s, Sharon remained active in politics, but mostly behind the scenes. Following Benjamin Netanyahus election to prime minister in 1996, he became a central figure in the Israel-Arab peace process. He was not very interested in dialogue, however, and refused to shake Palestinian leader Yasser Arafats hand, claiming that he would not shake the hand of a man he had spent years trying to kill. In 2001, Sharon was elected prime minister, and his policy on Palestine began to shift. He began to publicly support a two-state solution and started withdrawing settlers from Gaza and parts of the West Bank. The settlers he once championed began to feel betrayed and no longer supported him. During this period Sharon also abandoned the Likud party and founded the moderate Kadima party. Sharon was still prime minister in early 2006 when he was struck ill. He suffered two strokes and ended up in a coma until his death this month. While he is still mostly remembered for his hawkish ways and his unfortunate blunder at Sabra and Shatila, Sharons final years make for a conflicting legacy somewhere between hawk and diplomat that was left incomplete by his untimely incapacitation. Personal convictions aside, Sharon is viewed by all as one of the most famous and most effective politicians and generals of the 20th century. As a general, he was largely responsible for Israels independence, early expansion, and military victories when the odds seemed stacked against it. As a politician, he pulled himself up by his bootstraps and worked his way back to power and credibility after several careerthreatening incidents that would have easily been the bane of lesser politicians. Upon his election as prime minster, he put his personal beliefs aside and worked for what he felt was best for his people: a permanent peace with Palestine and its supporters.

Militarily, Sharon will be most remembered for his actions in the 1973 war with Egypt. He led his soldiers deep behind Egyptian lines, but this time successfully, managing to capture the Suez Canal and bring the war to an end. Following the 1973 war, Sharon moved from the military to politics. He was a founding member of the Likud party, which today remains a conservative force in Israeli politics. He won his first election to Parliament on the Likud ticket in December of 1973. As a member of Parliament, he was a strong advocate of the growing Israeli settlements. When Likud defeated Labor in general elections in 1977, Sharon joined the cabinet of the new prime minister, Menachem Begin. When Begin was re-elected in 1981, he was reappointed from agriculture minister to defense minister. It was under his direction that Israeli forces intervened in the brutal civil war unfolding in Lebanon in 1982. Seeing an opportunity to drive out Palestinian guerillas, align Israel with Christian revolutionaries lead by Bachir Gemayel, and install a new, pro-Israeli government in entered Palestinian refugee camps in the towns of Sabra and Shatila and massacred hundreds of civilians. To this day, the exact circumstances of this massacre are unclear, but responsibility was ultimately put on the IDF for supposedly standing by and sending the Phalangist militias into the camps, aware of the tensions that existed between the two groups. Every few years a film comes along that is definitive of the culture that it is born from, representing a larger ideal and scope that seems otherworldly compared to the small worlds we have all individually built ourselves. Such as David Finchers The Social Network, Her masterfully projects the modernization of our current society but it does so with a hopeful spin. The distant future does not seem to be overcome by criminal activity, destroyed by greed and egos, nor does it sport some George Jetson inspired flying cars. In the future that Jonze has constructed the buildings are taller but spaced out, the color palette is more likened to a Wes Anderson film rather than the typical gray and black hues. People are healthy, friendly and informed. It is a positive and artistic spin on what technology to can do. Her is about a lot of things, things that I have hardly scratched the surface at, but ultimately it is about the human connection and what it means. Is Theodores connection with Samantha, an operating system, any less significant than his relationship with his ex? What draws the lines between who and what is the recipient to a being's kindness? Samantha was a sentient being with whom Theodore fell in love with-how can the connection ring false? The theme of the movie, from the love and loss explored to Theodores profession, is about how people interact, how humans evolve throughout time and the ramifications a relationship can have and the growth it can inspire. It is a love story, a love story that I urge everyone to see and soon as they are able.

Harvard Film Archive presents novel-based Stalker

David Frederick Journal Staff
The most recent offering from the Harvard Film Archive is the complete works of Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky. Most known for his existential sci-fi art house fair Solaris. Many have said that it is about, the problem of overcoming, of convictions, of moral transformation on the path of struggle within the limits of ones own destiny. As a filmmaker, Tarkovsky is known for his deep focus that immerses the audience in whatever he chooses as his subject. He is no stranger to overcoming censorship either, as he was a big director working in the Soviet Union. The entry of Tarkovsky that I had the luxury of seeing was his opus of existential dread, Stalker. The film is based on the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It occurs after an alien event which has left many landscapes transformed and supposedly with rooms that can grant the subconscious desire of the person who enters said room. The film, which is scripted by the Strugatskys, follows this concept and introduces the stalker who is the person who brings outsiders from the brutal wasteland where pollution and decay is feverishly rampant to an area that has turned into something quite mystical. The area is known as the Zone and once the Stalker brings his newest clients, the Teacher and the Writer, there, the cohesive narrative disintegrates along with the minds and basic functions of the inhabitants. Perhaps that is one of the film's stylized strengths is but also one of its biggest flaws. The film's 163 minute run time consists mostly of long shots of the dystopian wasteland. In the beginning, we are introduced to the dredge of the cautionary world that these characters live in. Once in the Zone only then is there color brought into the film. Many critics over the years have stated that the brilliance of the film is that it predated the horrors to come with Chernobyl. The touch of Ingmar Bergmans influence is noticed too, as this films war ravaged existentialism is reminiscent of wild strawberries and even the general feel of Italian NeoRealism. While the length of the

film can be tedious, it is part of seeing the the deconstruction of these three men (actors Alexander Kaidanovsky, Anatoly Solonitsyn, and Nikolai Grinko) as well as a great representative of the creative process. The story has many ways to interpret its meaning and whatever that meaning is, it is part of Tarkovskys passion. As the titular Stalker said, passion is the friction between ones soul and the outside world. The Harvard Film Archive has many great events planned through out this semester. England's band Yuck loses lead, visits Sinclair to deliver a memorable show
Thomas Higgins Journal Contributor
The UK based band Yuck has managed to do something that very few bands are capable of, which is lose their lead singer and manage to find a way to come out even stronger in the end. After releasing their self-titled debut album, Yuck to much critical acclaim and touring all over the world, lead singer Daniel Blumberg left the band and was replaced by guitarist Max Bloom who stepped up and took on lead vocal duties. It is easy for a band to go through this kind of turmoil and fall by the indie rock wayside, but luckily that is not the case for Yuck. They have somehow managed to weather the storm and release an album that rivals the quality of their first. Therefore, I was quite excited to see the new lineup in person the other night. London, Englands band Yuck, along with openers, Velah and Alvvays came to the Sinclair in Cambridge to melt some faces as the band supports their recently released new album, Glow & Behold. B o s t o n bred rock band, Velah opened up the show with an energetic set filled with plenty of guitar riffs and powerful vocals by female lead singer Jen Johnson. Their music is very much in the same vain as a band like The Joy Formidable. Next up was Toronto based band, Alvvays, who kept the crowd going with a set filled with sugary lofi pop jams. Lead singer, Molly Rankin kept the stage banter to a minimum and instead let the music do the talking. Their debut album is set to arrive sometime in the spring. As the show continued into the late hours of the night, the energy within the small Cambridge v e n u e continued to grow as Yuck emerged and opened their set with the song Middle Sea from most recent album Glow & Behold. Throughout the set the Photo by Thomas Higgins band played a balanced mix of songs from their new release and crowd favorites from their debut album. Bassist Mariko Doi took over lead vocal duties on their old song, The Wall. One surprise highlight of the set was when the band busted into a cover of New Orders song Age of Consent which the band handled with their unique twist by adding their signature wall of distortion. I thought it was interesting to see a band with plenty of their own songs to play instead choosing to play someone elses. The biggest surprise of the night however, was that the bands most popular song Get Away was played early on in the set, while its commonplace in todays concerts to close with the biggest hit unless you have too many to choose from. The band instead chose to close out their set with the up-tempo rocker Georgia from their first album. The song was met with a loud burst of cheers though and closed off a great night of music in cobblestone city.

2014 back-to-school guide to fashion, as changeable as the weather

Maria Baluch Journal Staff
Take it from someone who has lived in Boston for a little over a year now: I have realized that the weather can be a little unpredictable at this time of year. Some days it is so cold that leaving the house, let alone getting out of bed, seems impossible and some days it is so warm that you just want to lounge in the Boston Common. So when it comes to changeable weather like this, what do you wear? Well only one word comes to mind: layers. It can be quite confusing in the morning when it is freezing outside and we have to get ready for class, work or other obligations, but by afternoon it is pretty sunny and calm. Instead stuffing your bag with last minute weather changing outfits, the best thing to do is layer effectively. So empty your bag of all those clothes because we can be real, you need room to carry your textbooks as is. For the days when it is not slightly cold, skip the oversized thick sweater and instead choose a chunky knit cardigan. Pair the knit cardigan with a casual top underneath so you can stay warm and easily slip off the cardigan when youre indoors, or later on in the day when the weather is bearable. This can also be good for those who love wearing knitwear but have sensitive skinlike me. Wearing something like a casual t-shirt underneath can help to not chafe the skin. Another helpful and comfy layering method is a hoodie. A simple hoodie can be really great for when you want to wear a feminine top such as a chiffon or satin blouse. Whether full sleeves or sleeveless, you can wear it underneath a fleece-lined zipper hoodie along with your usual winter jacket. Not only does this help defend you from the chilly wind, but also allows you take control so you can be confident with what is underneath when it is time to take off the jacket. Tops and sweaters are not the only thing that can be layered. For the days when youre running out the door, a two-in-one parka can really come in handy. Two-in-one parka-type coats are great because they come with an internal quilted bomber jacket that can be removed. Now you dont have to torture yourself and keep your heavy jacket on when the weather gets mild. Instead you can easily remove the lining and wear each piece separately, whichever best fits to how cold or warm you are. Now for the trickiest part of all when it comes to choosing an outfit: the legs. I always find it quite confusing as to what to wear for bottoms and opt for classic black leggings, as do most girls in Boston dont take my word for it, take a stroll through the streets and you will see for yourself. Skip the denim and dont wear jeans as they dont keep the cold out, and get quite uncomfortable during warmer conditions. A pair of fleece-lined leggings will be cozy on your legs and will even be fine with the changing weather as it wont make your legs sweat as pants or jeans. Sadly, none of us can predict the weather, especially in Boston, but wearing an outfit that can easily adapt to the weather and add or remove pieces is a great way to be prepared.

OPINION
we would argue that Donahue represents more than just bricks and cement to many CAS students. Obviously Suffolks geographical footprint in downtown Boston is changing. Contrary to what some Beacon Hill residents might believe, moving the schools buildings will not lessen the student population around their homes. Even if Suffolk eventually chooses to sell Donahue and Ridgeway, there will be less traffic around Temple Street but it will not stop it altogether. Regardless of where Suffolk students have class, they are still going to choose to live in Beacon Hill apartments. Suffolk students will still frequent Derne Street Deli, Caf Podima and of course, The Red Hat. There will still be Suffolk buildings around Beacon Hill thus there will still be Suffolk students around Beacon Hill. The opening of 20 Somerset and the eventual sale of Fenton will not change the identity Suffolk has as the citys only college on Beacon Hill. It would be a shame to see the geographical highlight of that identity in the form of Donahue turned into a local retirement home or day care. During a screening of the new war drama Lone Survivor at a movie theater in Florida, a man was fatally shot by a retired police captain after the victim apparently would not stop texting. Curtis Reeves, a 71-year-old former Tampa police captain, has been charged with second-degree murder. The victim was 43-yearold Chad Oulson, who was reportedly asked by Reeves to stop texting. The altercation reportedly lasted for a while, as Reeves was seen exiting the theater to seemingly alert management but returned alone. The argument came to a head, their voices raised, and Oulsons wife was shot in the hand while covering her husband who was shot in the chest. Reeves retired in 1993 and there have already been rumblings and news mentions of how he helped establish certain facets of the work they did. The implications of all of this are astonishing. There will be many reports that try to poke at the absurdity of the event; the fact that a man would actually draw a gun on another individual because he was caught texting. However, there is nothing that should be seen as humorous about this situation: a man died yet again at the hand of gun violence. People are going to draw connections from the movie to the event that transpired. Lone Survivor is patriotic, fast paced and very, very violent. People will think that violence edged on the act. News broke via the Boston Business Journal last week that Suffolk University has officially placed the Fenton building on the market. This move is not surprising based on earlier comments that university President James McCarthy told the Suffolk Journal about wanting to close the sale of both Fenton and Ridgeway before the opening of Suffolks new building in fall 2015. The more interesting comment to come from the Business Journals story was a quote from Beacon Hill Civic Association Board Chair Stephen Young that Suffolk had told him in previous conversations that the school also plans to sell its Donahue building. University spokesman Greg Gatlin told the Suffolk Journal among other media outlets that Fenton is the only building currently on the market. Donahue is the heart of the College of Arts and Sciences. It is one of the universitys oldest buildings and it is where the majority of its undergraduates have classes. Donahue has also been the home of the Suffolk Journal for quite some time. It is a running trend in Hollywood that abusive male artists tend to be forgiven or have their actions ignored despite obscene and offensive behavior. Sean Penn has a history of violence that had him charged with domestic assault against his then-wife Madonna, yet years later he went on to win accolades and awards for his performance in Milk. Mark Wahlberg in his teens assaulted a middle aged Vietnamese man with a large wooden stick while shouting a racial slur at him, and later that day he performed a similar act which resulted in the victim being blinded permanently in one eye; he also went on to achieve much success. His former wife Mia Farrow and son Ronan Farrow accused Woody Allen of molesting her adopted daughter Dylan while she was still very young, and yet at the recent Golden Globes he was rewarded with a lifetime achievement award. Roman Polanski fled the country decades ago after charges of sexual assault and multiple members of Hollywood, from all walks of life, have been vocal about wanting to see him be exonerated of his crimes.

If a female director ever threw a tantrum in the way that Russell threw his she would never be hired again, instantly losing all credibility. If a young female actress had an insidious past she would be passed over for another young, guileless actress rather than put into the spotlight and allowed to continue on with their violent and anger induced tendencies. Russell will not be the last corrupt male to inflict himself upon the world all in the name of his art, but as he is the most recent he is the one that we can actively take a stand against. Do not pay for his movies; it is as easy as that. By saying you can support the art without supporting the artist you are perpetuating the idea that Hollywood can get away the gender biased mindset they have committed themselves to.

Blackfish documentary rightfully causes viewers to avoid Sea World

Serina Gousby Journal Staff
Blackfish, a 2013 documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, focuses on a bull orca, more commonly known as a killer whale, that has a history of killing three people during his captivity in both Sea World in Orlando, Fla., and Sealand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia. The whale, named Tilikum, was captured in the early 1980s in Iceland, and has been living in captivity ever since. The film breaks down the many heartbreaking events that lead to Tilikum killing a Sea World trainer, Dawn Brancheau, in 2010, followed by the lawsuit against the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Sea World. It started in the 1970s, when divers and fishers would hunt for orcas, mainly the young ones, in the state of Washington. The mother whales had strategies to protect the young whales, but speedboats and aircraft eventually surrounded the mothers and young with nets. While the young were being
captured, the young mothers would communicate loudly as a sign of mourning and grief. One of the divers, John Crowe explained tearfully that I lost it. Its like kidnapping a little kid away from their mother. After being ejected from the state, they went to Iceland where they captured Tilikum and brought him to Sealand. The whales experience at the park was torturous. He was deprived of food, two of the trained female whales would rake (bite with their teeth) Tilikum from head to toe out of frustration, and he was trapped inside a box from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning with the abusive whales. This eventually led to Tilikum killing an employee by drowning her in front of the audience at the park. The park was immediately closed and Sea World wanted Tilikum. The most heartbreaking fact about the entire situation was that the documented cause of death for the trainer did not include Tilikum, and the Sea World trainers had no idea that the whale was a part of the incident. The film continues to showcase many events including separating mothers and the calves in the park and hearing the mothers screech and cry, the constant abuse and killing between whales. The trainers were told from Sea World to say invalid information about killer whales to visitors and more than 70 injuries and attacks between the trainers and the whales in different Sea World locations were never discussed with the trainers in Orlando. Sea World executives and spokesman had even blamed many of the trainers for the injuries, including Brancheau for her death. This film is very hard to watch without feeling empathetic for not only the many trainers who were hurt and killed by orcas, but for the beautiful whales living in captivity for the sake of entertainment. According to the film, the whales have no history of hurting humans in the wild because they are known to be very friendly and gentle, however being held in a facility for more than 20 years is a perfect reason why the sea animal would cause harm to the trainers. Because of a court order, trainers now have a barrier between them and the whales, but this does not change the fact that the whales deserve to be freed from the park. The film can be watched on Netflix, and like many others, I have no desire to go to Sea World after seeing this agonizing film.

girls and boys are raised with. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life, she wrote. And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible. Unfortunately, her addition to The Shriver Report is brief and left a woman like myself wanting more. Consciously or not, I have looked up to Beyonc in some way for as long as I can remember. However, females need not newest album, Pretty Hurts and ***Flawless have been resonating strongly with female audiences. The more somber track, Pretty Hurts, vocalizes the pressure and struggle of young women trying to fit into a society that puts a strong emphasis on perfection in physical appearance. ***Flawless is a fierce girl-power track that features Nigerian feminist writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie mid-song. The song uses excerpts from her talk at We Should All Be Feminists in London. We raise girls to see each other as competitors, not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good knows that women can and should embrace their sexual side. Her videos for Drunk in Love and Partition tear down the boundaries of sexual expression that have been set up for women. The lyrics to Partition, and to the bubblier track Blow, would make anyone blush, and for good reason. It is about time women are allowed to sexually express themselves in the same way that men do; I dare you to use a misogynistic slur against Beyonc for doing so. Part of Beyoncs appeal as somewhat of a modern feminist is her celebration of her marriage and new last name. As a woman who plans to marry and take her future husbands last name, it is refreshing to see a symbol for the female cause embracing that tradition. She is proud to be Mrs. Carter in the same way that I will be proud to be Mrs. DiCaprio someday. She shows us that women can embrace their feminism and stand up for the female cause while still preserving harmless customs that bond them with their male counterparts. Although a big part of feminine confidence is physical appearance, it is refreshing to have a powerful woman represent and speak out about feminist ideas. Beyonc serves as a role model for all women

Gianna Carchia Opinion Editor
Beyonc has not only long been a role model for young girls as far as body image, she has also been a shining example of how far women can, and should, reach for their careers. Her incredible vocal talent no doubt helped her to achieve her current goddess-like success, but to disregard the strength of her female spirit would be ignoring a large part of what makes Beyonc, well... Beyonc. Weeks after the release of her self-titled secret album, a feminist essay of hers was

SPORTS BRIEFS
Denver Nuggets' Danilo Gallinari out for season
If the playoff hunt was not hard enough for the Denver Nuggets, it is going to be even harder without Danilo Gallinari. The small forward tore his ACL and underwent surgery Tuesday which eliminates any shot of him returning this season. The Nuggets are currently .500 and only own the tenth-best record in the western conference, so losing a big player like Gallinari is only going to be a step back, if not one giant step out of contention. Gallinari was a key component to the Carmelo Anthony trade with the New York Knicks, and his absence does not give the team much star power other than Kenneth Faried. He has not played this season because of a knee surgery from last year, but when he did play, the team's win percentage was .704. That is a huge gap for only missing one player in action, so the Nuggets will have to find some answers fast because the western conference is not going to get any easier.

Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders make Pro Bowl picks

Whether you like it or not, the NFL Pro Bowl is going to happen this weekend. To give credit to the NFL, it tried its best to make things interesting by making legendary players Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders the alumi team captains. Fantasy football style, they will draft players onto their teams by who they think will be most valuable to their squad. Rice declared that New Orleans' quarterback Drew Brees and St. Louis' defensive end Robert Quinn would be his team captains. Sanders' captains will be Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles and Houston defensive end J.J. Watt. The Pro Bowl will be this Sunday at 7 p.m., a game that has received plenty of criticism in the past about being pointless, uncompetitive, and a money-hungry event. The NFL hopes this new look will give the game an extra spice to keep fans interested.

Henrik Sedin misses first game in 10 seasons

The iron man of the NHL will now watch his streak come to an end. Henrik Sedin has played in 679 hockey games in a row, which spans over 10 seasons. Sedin was listed as dayto-day on the injury report. The only other player who has a longer active streak (only four games more than Sedin) is St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. Sedin has been a solid player for the Vancouver Canucks since he was drafted third overall in 1999. He has had a decent year so far with 40 points, but only nine goals. He does not know how to be a goal scorer, but great with assists and opening up the ice for his line. No matter how many goals he has scored or assists he has made, playing 679 games of hockey in a row without any incidents of any kind is an impressive feat.

Men's hoop back on track with two dramatic comeback wins

Vassili Stroganov Sports Editor
Coming back from winter break can be tough for any team, but that did not seem to be the case for the Suffolk mens team this winter. In 2014 the Rams have posted a 4-2 record and showed everyone that the team is a serious contender for a top four GNAC playoff spot. With Tuesday's Lasell game cancelled because of the snow storm, the next game on the Rams schedule is against Emmanuel on Jan. 25. If Suffolk wins this game, the goal of reaching a no. 4 position in the league will be much more realistic. Head coach Adam Nelson spoke about this years team and how much the team has improved since the begining of the season. We are a pretty young team," Nelson said. "We dont have any seniors. We start two freshmen, two sophomores, and a first-year junior transfer, so we are a very young team. The last two games were really great wins on the road. In both of them we were down We get different contributions from different guys every time. There is a lot of talent in this team. The depth of the team is great said Nelson. Having no seniors on the team might have seemed like a disadvantage at the beginning of the season, but as fans have witnessed, a young team can achieve great results as well, and the future of mens hoop has not looked this bright in a long time. When you have such a young team as we have, without any seniors, you are gonna go through some rough patches and we did. But we came out of that and I have to give the guys a lot of credit for that," said Nelson. "Its a really good group of guys, and that helps us in the fight for that fourth place in the conference that is very important, because the first four teams get to host the first round games in the playoffs." Mens basketball has certainly turned around its season in 2014 and seem to be back in business. Now the team has to make sure it stays on the right track and secures a top four spot in the GNAC tournament.

and came back and won in the end. Against Norwich we were down by 18 points and came back and won the game in the second half," he said. "Against Rivier we were down by nine points and turned it around again. A couple of weeks ago we beat Anna Maria here at home at the buzzer. Jake Meister hit a three-pointer in the last

seconds of the game. "Comeback" has been the key word of the season so far, and the guys have show an incredible will to fight for every point and win the games no matter how bad the score is. The will to fight is incredibly important for an athlete and it seems like the Suffolk team is a group of athletes who do not give up easily and fight to

the very end. Besides being fighters, the Rams are also very talented. Freshman Frantz Pinard has been playing outstandingly and was honored rookie of the week three times already this season. Weve got very talented players and they make big shots at big times and a lot of different guys have stepped up.

Men's hockey struggles as season's end approaches

CJ Haddad Journal Staff
Before going into winter break, the Suffolk mens hockey team started off the season a mere 3-5-1. Since Dec. 7, the Rams have played an additional six games, with a 2-4 record. Out of the past six games, none have them have been conference games for Suffolk, who remain 2-2-1 in the ECAC. The Rams started off the break strong with a 4-1 victory over Franklin Pierce. After going down 1-0 early in the first, Suffolk scored four unanswered goals to pick up the road victory. Goal scorers included Dan Mazzei, Stanton Turner, Mike Cherpak, and Tim Sprague. Special teams were also on display in this game as Suffolk managed to score on the power play and on the shorthand. The Rams also killed off three power play chances from Franklin Pierce. The following game was by far the hardest to watch this season for the mens hockey team. Against a talented UMass Boston team, Suffolk fell by a score of 10-1, yes, 101. UMass was only ahead by one goal after one period, and then exploded for seven in the second. After tacking on two in the third period, the final score stood with the Beacons having a double-digit night on the scoreboard. The next matchup saw Suffolk hosting nearby Tufts University. Although the team was against a different club, the poor play continued. At the end of the first period, Tufts was ahead 3-0, converting on two power play chances. Early in the second, Tufts added another to increase the lead to four. Suffolk did add a power play goal of its own, scored by Dan Mazzei, his fourth of the year. A scoreless third period resulted in a 4-1 loss for the Rams. With things not going its way, the only thing to do for the club is to pick their heads up and find a way to play better hockey. That is exactly what they did in the following game, a rematch against Tufts just three days after the 4-1 defeat. This time, Suffolk was the one on top of the scoreboard after the first period. Two quick goals by Steve Colomey and Charlie McGinnis helped the Rams jump out to an early lead. Tufts added a power play goal before the end of the period, making the score 2-1. In the second period, Tufts converted another power play against the Rams, evening up the game at two-a-piece. The score remained that way until the third period. In that decisive period, Tufts, to no ones surprise, scored yet another power play goal giving them the lead early on in the third. The next two goals would belong to Suffolk, including a power play goal of its own. The two goals would be enough as the Rams finally found the win column since the victory at Franklin Pierce. Unfortunately for the Rams, the winning trend did not continue. The next two games resulted in another two losses for the club, being outscored by a margin of 10-5. It is clear that this hockey team does have talent, but lacks in the special teams department. The defense needs to start playing as one and helping out the goaltenders for Suffolk. This team has allowed quite a few more goals than they have put up so far this year, and the tides need to change quickly with the most crucial part of the season in the future. Of the final nine games the Rams have left on the schedule, all of them are conference games. The teams overall record (5-9-1) might not be so impressive, but having a 2-2-1 record in the conference in not a terrible spot to be in. If the men and Coach Chris Glionna want to make a push at the playoffs, the time to start is now. These final nine games will be a real test to see if these men have what it takes to want it more than the other team does. The next game is Jan. 25 against Curry College.

The sharpest shooter in Suffolk Athletics:

Chris Cercone
Vassili Stroganov Sports Editor
Dedicated, diligent and down to earth: three phrases that describe Chris Cercone to the bone. The senior and Salem native has worked as a video coordinator in the athletic department since 2010. In his almost four years on the job, he has taped many games of the university's sports teams. In fact, Cercone has been a key factor in the impressive progress of sports media here at Suffolk. The man, who has taped more than 150 games for Suffolk Athletics for soccer, basketball, volleyball and hockey, remains humble and focused on doing his job right. Basically I just set up my video camera and record the game. Then I burn it to a DVD and give it to the coaching staff so they have a game that they can watch," Cercone said. "They can see what they did right and what they did wrong so they can game plan for the future. I am trying to help them win some basketball games. I mostly film the basketball matches now. In the past I also filmed mens and womens soccer, but I wasnt able to do that the past season because I was too busy." Cercones interest in sports media began in middle school going into high school. Deciding what classes to take in his freshman year, he took a media production class as an elective because it sounded interesting. It later turned out that he loved the class and was so good at it that his high school football coach asked him to film the football games. This led Cercone to the path he is on today. Starting his college career at Suffolk in 2010, Cercone was very happy to get the job as a video coordinator and he now looks back on how he got it. I did a lot of taping of games in high school when I was at Salem High, especially basketball games. So the summer before my freshman year here at Suffolk, I sent the former Athletic Director Jim Nelson an email asking him if I could film games for the department and when he told me the opportunity was there, I started the job as a work study. Someone who really benefits from all the hours of raw footage from the games are the coaches and the players in the athletic department. After Cercone has filmed a game, he always gives the footage straight to the coaches so they can look through it and decide what needs to be improved in the team and what the team did well. Mens basketball head coach Adam Nelson described how much Cercone and his work means for the basketball team, and the whole athletics department. Chris is awesome. He does so much for us and so much for our department with the video and the technology. He is unbelievable. I met Chris at orientation right before his freshman year. We started talking and now he has worked

Jim Nelson gives Cercone the Carol Maggio Department Recognition Award for the 2012 - 2013 season

"I honestly do not know what I am going to do without him next year. He is tremendous." - Adam Nelson, head coach of men's basketball
can always see on the video if a defender is not in the right position or the spacing isn't right and things like that. Basically you can always see what you did right and what you did wrong and improve your game. The senior's hard work was rewarded at the Athletic Departsment's Sports Banquet at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year, when he received the Carol Maggio Department Recognition Award for his hard work behind the camera. Cercone might not be an athlete himself, but all the work he has done for the Athletic Department cannot be taken for granted. Junior forward of the mens basketball team Adam Kaplan said, I always told Chris that he should make a sports highlight page for high school kids, because it is a good business to be in and he is very talented at filming the videos. Cercone will be graduating this spring, and will most likely be missed both for his friendly nature and for his diligent work for Suffolk athletics. Cercone does not want to think about graduation just yet. Thats depressing," he said. "Its so hard to say what I am going to miss the most. I feel like Im just gonna miss the experience of going to college, being able to go to class, being able to get an education. When I do the walk and get the degree its all over. That kind of closes the book on this fantastic experience I have been able to have for four years. After graduation Cercone plans to continue his work as a video coordinator. He wants to work for a college football team, bringing them the important game footage necessary for them to improve. Cercone has previously worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology football team as their video coordinator, so he already has some great experience in the field both from Suffolk and MIT. It is students like Chris Cercone that makes the Suffolk athletic department function better and improve every day. Hopefully the department will find another video coordinator of Cercone's caliber for next year, but the chances are very small.

for us for four years and it has been awesome to get to know him," Nelson said. "He has helped us so much with recording the games and emailing them out. Chris has helped us with all the technology and has been there for us all the time and I honestly do not know what I am going to do without him next year. He is tremendous; he is definitely a big part of our team, said Nelson. C e r c o n e himself knows how much the footage can help a team.
