How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?

It is said that a successful music video should make clear visual links between it and its ancillary products. Looking back at one of my blog posts about synergy, I planned to include the colour of the blue lipstick, worn by the featuring singer seen in the music video. However, I later on noticed that the main focus on the digipak should be the main artist whom is the producer of our music video. Despite given less screen time in the music video, the main artist (Y !"#rik$ should be the main focus. In addition, our group then decided that the iconic mo%hawk hairstyle would be a product of synergy. &his represents individuality and character to the artist, which helps create a bond within the fan base. Linking back to our original song artist '(&)*&, the iconic mask gives the artist some originality, standing out from the crowd of other artist competitors. ! picture contrasting the two artists will be shown below as well as some annotations relating to synergy.

(ringing it all together, the iconic hairstyle is present within both the main product and ancillary te+ts, but mostly the ancillary te+ts. &he main video focuses on the featuring artist, which she is still promoting the artist but she is not present in the ancillary te+ts. ,ur artist focuses mainly on instrumental creating talent rather than singing vocals, which is our reason why we only show glimpses of the artist throughout the music video. 'mall shots of the main artist are shown consistently through out but only for a short amount of time, for about -%. seconds ma+imum. /urthermore, the use of dark clothing was consistent throughout the music video, both the main and featuring artist. !n e+ample would be the black scarf that the main artist is wearing (seen on the previous page$. &he audience can see this as linked products as the black scarf is seen in the digipak and advert. 0ost of our shots in the music video are not in direct sunlight but in dark conditions. &he synergy of colour is consistent as the ancillary te+ts both have dark coloured backgrounds.

1ow lets take a look at e+isting products, which will illustrate how I have used synergy. !n e+ample would be Daft 2unk3s album named 4)andom !ccess 0emories4. &he iconic gold and black headgear is present on the music video, advertisement and the album cover. It is shown that the band is performing in a pitch black background, preferably in space since we can see stars. &he background seen in the video is similar to the ancillary products. &his is done so that the audience can see a visual link and recogni5e the artist easily when taking a glimpse at the advertising poster I have done the same concept here, the synergy I have used have been e+actly the same to the synergy of real media products. I will be screen grabbing the important key bits where the music video shows synergy relating to its ancillary products.

! 6uestion of if our synergy is related in terms of meeting target audience is somewhat controversial. &o pinpoint the e+act target audience age group for #lectronic music is very difficult and is not specific. ,ur type of music is #lectronic but mi+ed with various others such as post dub step, indie pop and bass. 0y opinion on the target audience for electronic music is for ages 78 and above. &he reason for this is because most electronic music is played in nightclubs and festivals, which is popular at that age. 9sually nightclubs have an age restriction of over 78:s and our artist '(&)*& does a lot of these events. However, I have created a survey using a website called ;'urvey 0onkey< in which I have asked 7= people around the ages of 7>%78 year olds to see if they liked electronic music, and if they did, if our synergy used was relevant. Here are the results? the numbers in brackets below are the amount of people who ticked this bo+.

&he responses I got from the second 6uestion were almost identical. I will pick out one by random and show you the response. It seems that the synergy I have used were relevant and effective as it helps the audience recognise the electronic genre whilst looking at my advertisement, digipak or music video. ,verall I believe that there is a strong connection between the main product and the ancillary products.
