In part 2 of the IELTS speaking module you need to give a short talk of between one and half and two minutes. There are two major problems here: speaking for long enough and staying oherent. In this video post I am going to look briefly at one way to organise your talk and improve you fluen y and oheren e band s ore.

The problem a presentation with no preparation

I find it helps to think of part 2 as a short presentation ! the hallenges are the very similar. "ne of hallenges of presentations is to organise your ontent so that people an understand your message and one of the basi rules of a making a good presentation is to prepare it properly. In IELTS# however# you only have $ minute to prepare and most of that time will be spent thinking of vo abulary to use. So how an you organise your talk with little%no preparation time&

A solution use the cue card

"ne solution is to use the ue ard as the stru ture of your talk. The way to do this is 'uite simple ! all the ue ards are organised in the same way with one major topi and ( sub) topi s. Look at this sample ue ard:

Describe a wedding you have been to or heard about. ;ou should say8 who got married what they wore what they did on the day and e2plain how you felt about this wedding.
There are ( topi s to talk about: $. the people 2. the lothes

*. the day itself (. your feelings "ne natural solution is to go through ea h of these topi s in turn and use the ue ard to organise what you say.

How to work it
To see how you an make this work# take a look at this video and note these points: ea h point is dis ussed in turn there are pauses between ea h se tion signpost language is used to show the e+aminer a new topi is being introdu ed

The reason that the video only shows the ue ard is that in the test itself it helps you to fo us on the ue ard as you speak. This does not mean that you look at it all the time be ause you also need to make eye onta t with the e+aminer but you should keep it in your hand and refer to it onstantly.

Advantages it makes the task easier

This approa h an make the task easier be ause you always know what you are going to say ne+t and it allows you to pause in the right pla es. It an take the pressure off you. It works like this:

"n e you have spoken about one topi # you look down at the ard for a moment ,ause and think about what to say ne+t and relax Look up at the e+aminer# make eye onta t Start again: -The ne+t thing I am going to tell you is./

This an help you be ause one mistake andidates often make is to think they have to talk and talk without stopping. 0ou don1t. In fa t# pausing orre tly is part of fluen y and oheren e be ause it allows your listener to understand your main points.

Advantages it helps fluency and coherence

2nother reason to try this approa h is that it an help your fluen y and oheren e band s ore. To get this right there are 2 main points to fo us on: $. using signposting language to help your listener understand the main points you are making 3new post oming soon4 2. e+panding the points you make with reasons and e+amples ! e+a tly as you would in an essay 3new post oming soon4

Does it always work?

In a word# no. I am always suspi ious of tea hers who use the word -must/. 5ifferent people are different and different things work for different people. In my e+perien e# some andidates find this approa h very helpful# while it onfuses others. 6y advi e is to try it a few times and see if it works for you. If it doesn1t try something different.

Some practice with oxopop

If you want some online pra ti e# I have posted a new task at 7o+opop where you an re ord yourself and hopefully listen to others try the same. If you are new to this site# here is the link to my previous posting about using 7o+opop:
