Unit F632 Creative Artefact Evaluation The aim of my artefact was to create an extract of a film, through a script.

In my textual analysis I compared two well-recognized films in the horror genre, Fright Night (Craig Gillispie, US, 2011) and Woman in Black (James Watkins, UK 2012). I focused on two key themes, which were fear and isolation, which was represented in the two films I explored. This was done through the use of micro elements. I intended to do a similar scene using two young girls, which is different to both films, as both protagonists are young men in contrast to the fact that the protagonist in the other two films are female and male. When creating my artefact I intended to imply the codes and conventions represented within the two themes. I acknowledged the scenes I looked at, to understand the emotions which I would use for my 9 key frames. I incorporated this into my artefact by using low key lighting which also relates to the narrative theory of Roland Bathes who believes that a horror genre creates mystery to the audience creating an enigma I also selected camera angles such as a long shot, mid shot and close ups focusing on the protagonists faces showing fear and isolation. An example of this being used would be in Fright Night where Charley Brewster sneaks into Jerrys Dandridges house trying to find proof that Jerry is a vampire and by the use of expression allowed me to convey fear and isolation. It was my aim to reconstruct a similar but different short scene, focusing on the one main protagonist who is portrayed as isolated and scared to the audience. To do this I planned to use the conventions I recognized when exploring my two chosen films which will include the shots such as long shot, mid shot to create a believable, strong performance which will connote to the audience that she is isolated and afraid. I also used low-key

lighting, which was used in both films creating mystery to the audience alongside using non-diegetic sound such as score music and eerie music creating more of a mystery allowing the audience to question themselves what is about to happen. When beginning my artefact, I looked and sorted out four possible actresses for my female lead. I filmed each of these actors performing while they were reading an extract from my script I did this through a screen test, which allowed me to assess who was a potential character to use. I filmed each of these actors in a mid shot, which allowed me to see a full picture of their gestures. While each actress was performing I made notes on how they performed and how well they used gestures. As the casting director I decided on which actress to use for the role of the protagonist and a second actress who is the friend of the protagonist. Which I will then be able apply to my 9 key frames. My artefact had both disadvantages and advantages. The disadvantages were that it took a while to find actresses to use, as I did not know who would be right for the part, which is why I did a screen test to help me. At times the actors were not able to attend, as they were busy. However the advantages of this was that I chose a two creative actresses through the screen test which allowed me to have a better understanding of the performance being seen by the audience and lastly the location I picked was ideal as it wasnt far and easily accessible. One of my locations was set outside of Oaks Park High School as my artefact was about two protagonists leaving school, here I used a long shot showing the protagonist walking out of school, a mid shot showing the surroundings and lastly a close up of their facial expressions which will show isolation and fear of the protagonists walking. My second location is near a farm, which had a horror look to it allowing myself to follow the horror convention and showing the themes being explored by both

protagonists. I will use a long shot, close up and a mid shot showing specific conventions allowing the audience to understand the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist who is isolated and afraid. Within this location I used a POV showing what one of the protagonist see which will connote to the audience how the themes are being explored.
