Ice on the Land

A A tributary above a glacial trough perched up on the side of a main valley it often has a waterfall. B Rocks and debris dragged along at the bottom of the glacier C A machine which is used to produce artificial snow. D The sudden and rapid flow of snow down a slope. It can be triggered naturally or by humans. E A period in the Earths history where there is a drop in global temperature. F Going out after skiing, for drinks, food and entertainment. G The dropping of debris by a glacier which does not have enough energy to carry it. H The period of the earths history from 2.5m to 12 000 years ago which includes recent glaciations. I An effect on businesses and the economy in a place. J Part of an ice age where the temperature is very low. The part in between the glacial. K A type of erosion which involves ice freezing around a rock before pulling it out of the rock face when the glacier moves. L The lower part of a corrie where some debris has been deposited. This acts as a dam allowing a tarn to form. M The addition of snow and ice to a glacier. N A sharp-edged mountain ridge. O A small lake found in a corrie. P A moving mass of ice which moves down a valley Q An eroded interlocking spur, normally it has a very steep cliff R A high ridge running across the valley which shows how far the glacier advanced. S The planning of a ski resort to allow activities in different areas. T Another name for a U-shaped valley. They are valleys found in lands that were or are glaciated.

U A way in which peoples lives are affected V The breaking down of rocks by the frequent freezing and thawing of water which gets into rocks and forces cracks open. W A ridge of frost shattered sediment which runs along the side of a glacier where it meets the valley side. X Movement of ice in a corrie in a semi-circular motion due to the shape of the wall. Y The generation of electricity by the movement of water through a dam. Z The wearing away of the land, in this case by ice. AA Actions designed to solve problems or minimise their effects. BB A deep depression on a hillside, with a steep back wall, often containing a lake. CC The pushing of rocks and debris down the valley by a glacier. DD Something put into a system (here maybe snow). EE Erosion by the sandpaper effect, where the ice scours the valley floor and sides. FF The balance in a glacier, between input and output. GG A way in which a natural or built place is affected by something. HH The movement of sediment by a glacier. II The end of a glacier (where it has advanced furthest). JJ Something taken out of a system (here due to melting say). KK A ridge of sediment which runs down the centre of a glacier. It is formed when two lateral moraines merge. LL The loss of snow and ice by melting and evaporation. MM An egg-shaped hill found on the floor of a glacial trough. NN These are ridges of land formed by river erosion in an upland valley. A glacier will chop them off. OO Material transported and then deposited by a glacier. PP A knife-edged ridge often formed between 2 corries. QQ A long narrow lake in the bottom of a glacial trough.
