Golconda, 1953 by Rene Magritte First reaction I like this piece of artwork as it is peculiar, rare and and it is totally

unusual. You cannot find these type of paintings anywhere. I like the colors, the pattern of the men and the way these men are painted. Their expressions are similar somehow which is really strange but catches my attention. This painting makes me feel thoughtful as I start to think about the painting and in what way it is related to me or my ideas. In this case this painting makes me think deeply in maybe that society is boring, meaning there is no unique aspects about it, it is all written as a pattern that people have to follow, you are somehow not allowed to do or become into the things you want to become. The Golconda reminds me of a dream I once had where all the people were not allowed to be different, as they had to stick to everyones stereotype of being the same. Description The background starts with a dark light blue color but as it goes down and it starts reaching to a series of houses, it starts getting lighter almost as white. On the down part of this painting, there are house blocks they have the typical American neighborhoods houses colors. Their roof is reddish colored, the rest is white and the windows are all symmetrical, nothing differs from others in the house. Nevertheless, the houses are not the same size, some are thicker and taller but the center one is thin and small. The rest of the painting is covered by men fully, the ones who are closer are bigger and their expressions can be seen a little more. All of these men are wearing black coats, black hats, black pants and shoes. They all look alike, with their hands in their pockets and not happy at all, it is like they do not have a personality. Besides the painting has no bright colors all of the colors are ground colors, with poor light and slightly boring. Formal Analysis The artist uses a weak type of palette as the colors are dull and not as bright as they can be, the main colors Rene uses in this painting are secondary and tertiary, he might be using these colours as he wants to transmit something to the audience. Light blue and black gray are the main colors that can be seen that Rene mainly used in this painting. As he is using these colors so often he is emphasizing on those objects were the colors were used which the sky and the men which are floating around the painting. The colors that were less used in this painting was the yellow, this color was used in little details in the windows to give the light in the windows a more special effect. The use of colors varies throughout the painting, for example the light blue DE graduates from the upper part to the downer part where it reaches the houses. By looking at the painting it could be said that the colors are mixed to give different effects through the painting as with the roofs, the sky. There is use of light as well of shadow in this piece of artwork, it can be clearly observed between the sky and the houses there is a gap where light is coming from, besides the men and the corners from the houses have shadows. The shadows are mainly on the back of the men but they are not clearly shaded as it is only one basic shadow with no direction, they are all straight shadows which confuses the audience on the source of light. But it can be said that the light is coming from the back of the house and from the front side of the men. The parts of this painting are not so detailed painted therefore this looks an aspect of the painting being a cartoon type of painting. Due to the form of the shadows, in my opinion this artwork does not look 3D. The tonal contrast of light and shadows is very weak that is why cannot be confused with a 3D image. The medium used by the artist is oil and it can be assumed it was apply in a thin way as the details on the men clothing is well detailed. The texture of the painting is quite rough and there might had been marmaking to make details on some objects such as the clothing. In my opinion I would say this artwork was drawn and then painted to make the men and the houses as the outlines are really thin.

In this artwork there are a lot of different shapes used, for the men and their respective shadows rounded shapes are used for all of them but in the houses all of the shapes are straight and very geometrical as well as symmetrical. These shapes are spread evenly through the painting in fact a sort of pattern can be seen with the shadows and men who are at the back. Some shapes specially in the windows of the houses and the shadows of the men the shapes are repeated. This whole composition looks peaceful and still due to the colors and use of shadows of the artist. The fact of using dull colours transmits peace to the audience. The centre of interest of the composition would be the men who are spread somehow evenly through this work, and in fact that is the main reason that attracts the audience in this case me as it makes you think on the simplicity of the world. I think the artist wanted people to feel thoughtful and wonder how could the painting relate to something in society, besides from transmitting peace this artwork transmits confusion. By using repetition in the patterns, simplicity and dull colours the artist creates a mood of peace as it is mentioned before. The artist has succeeded in creating this mood because dull colours are used to express maybe loneliness, peace and depression. The same mood could have been created in another way for instance by using different shapes or more variation the tones of the colors. In my opinion, Golconda is an excellent piece of artwork as it may express so many different things for different type of people. In my case the use of his colors (dull colours) and the patterns with shapes used in the men makes me wonder how simple society can be but at the same time that everyone is the same. As if everyone needs to follow the same process in order to be them, they cant free themselves as they are stuck inside that circle which wont let go of them.

Figure with Meat, 1954 by Francis Bacon First Reaction

I like this piece of artwork as I think it is really interesting by all of the textures used and the expression of the man at the centre. I feel excited when I see this painting because I wonder what is the story behind the painting, I imagine a setting and a situation based upon this painting. This painting reminds me of horror movies because all of the blood transmits me fear, the type of fear people feel when they are watching a scary movie. Description The objects that can be seen in this painting are a man, a body cut into 2 parts, a dark room, different types of colors, rough texture almost as leather. A person, looks like a priest dressed with a purple tunic and a hat those type of hats only priests use. Above this person there is a body cut into 2 this body looks very similar to a pig bodys, it looks as if it was cut in a slaughter house. Both the body spilling blood along its ribs and the man who looks as if he was turning into a skeleton, old and with some bones showing off, are locked in a dark room where only 3 walls can be observed. It can be observed that a strong type of pallette was used in this painting and it has a mixture of complementary and tertiary colours. The main colours used in this artwork are the dark colours, including black, dark purple, dark red and dark blue. The colors that were less used in this artwork are the primary colors such as yellow. There is only few times where the color yellow was used. The colors are used in different parts in different ways to give different textures, in the parts where the texture was more tough the colors were paintes in a cross checking way but in the lighter parts (whiter) this type of cross checking was not used, it was more soft. The colours have not been applied straight as it is evident that they were mixed and blended bewteen each other in order to create that peculiar and outstanding effect. In this artwork there are a lot of shadows specially in the middle part where the man and the body cut in two pieces are, it could be said that there are different sources of light but the main ones are the sources that come from the sides. Inside the shapes there are a lot of shadows, in fact the part where more

shadows are observed is in the body cut in 2 and the man standing right below this body. The models of this artwork is very realistic and has a 3D effect as there was a lot of detail put into the main object which are the body and the man, by using shadows these objects specially the man seem to come out of the painting. There is a strong tonal contrast and it can be simply observed in the man and its expressions the way the shadows were made in contrast with the light creates a scary effect. This artwork might have used charcaol or clay as its medium. The artist has used this medium in a thin way in order to create the blending between colors by doing cross checking. The texture that can be appreciated is a rough texture as if it was folded leather. In my opinion I think this artwork took a lot of time as there has a lot of detail put into it. In this piece of artwork more geometrical shapes are being used , the man and the body have round shapes but the background is totally rectangular which creates a mixture of diifferent shapes used. The main part of the painting is well detailed with a lot of shapes on it but the background is plane with 4 rectangles in different angles. Not all of the shapes done are repeated through this artwork, it can be more observed that they are not as similar as in the Goclonda. This artwork transmits energy and fear to the audience, due to its texture and shadows, the audience is transmitted fear because it reaches your heart and your internal feelings. The centre of interest would be the man and the body of a pig cut into 2, this draws the attention of people because the pain meaning where there is blood, the detail is really well drawn, emphasizing on the pain and paranoia on the audience. As it is mentioned before I think the artist wanted his audience to feel afraid but somehow still interested in this painting as it makes the audience wonder what is the story behind that painting. The tone of colours he has used is the main thing which has attracted the audience, there is a lot of contrast between the body and the man. The artist achieved this mood but he could create it in a different way by making the background even darker therefore the audience won't distract. In summation, I think this piece of artwork is great as it really draws you attention by the high level amount of detail in the painful parts. This transmits somehow pain onto the audience as the audience feels the creepiness of the place. It is almost as if the artist wanted you to transport you to that place and make you feel the same pain.
