HawkReach Counseling Service free to NSU students LaTasha Atcity TNE Writer

Latasha Atcity/TNE HawkReach is a free counseling service offered to students. the office is located on the north end of the Leoser Complex. Student Affairs at NSU offers services such as HawkReach Counseling Services to help students succeed in their academic journey. HawkReach provides free confidential counseling to all enrolled students. At some time during the process of life, things can happen that can impede or derail students from the trek they have been on, said Marta Vann, licensed professional counselor for HawkReach. Academic success can be demanding at times. It takes more than good grades to be successful. At times students may need someone to listen or help them sort through stressful situations. HawkReach is a resource that is accessible and free to students where they will be treated with respect, dignity and understanding, said Vann. There are common issues addressed by the counseling service. HawkReach is a secure program developed to help students navigate through their problems.

If a student is struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, feelings of isolation, grief or other life challenges, we offer counseling in an empathic, safe and confidential environment said Vann. NSUs campus is a diverse community with different types of groups and personalities. Some students may have trouble adjusting to new routines, homework or unexpected tragedy. Sometimes people need counseling; sometimes people need information; sometimes people need a place where they feel they belong and are accepted for who they are, said Sheila Self, LPC, director of counseling services. All students should have the support they need to succeed in college. Supportive programs like HawkReack are more beneficial to students when utilized. I really want to see the NSU community utilize our space as well as get involved in what we are doing here, said De Jon Jordan, BA coordinator of outreach and prevention. It is a really special place. The counseling service provides different resources useful to NSUs community. Centers like this only work if the communities its trying to reach use them, said Jordan.
