PHYSICS (101/4) TUTORIAL 8 Centripetal Force 1. A 70kg runner rounds a level track of radius 25m at a speed of 8.8m/s.

What is the centripetal force causing the runner to turn, and what exerts the force? 2. Two 8kg masses are attached to the end of a thin rod 400mm long. The rod is supported in the middle and whirled in a circle. The rod can support a maximum tension of only 800 N. What is the maximum frequency of revolution? 3. On a rainy day, the coefficient of static friction between tires and the roadway is only 0.4. What is the maximum speed at which a car can negotiate a turn of radius 80m? 4. A platform rotates freely at 100rev/min. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.5, how far from the center of the platform can a bolt be placed without slipping? 5. A rock rests on the bottom of a bucket moving in a vertical circle of radius 70cm. What is the least speed the bucket must have as it rounds the top of a circle if the rock is to remain in the bucket? 6. A ball is tied a 0.24 m string and rotated as shown in figure below. Determine the speed of the ball if angle between the string and the vertical is 15.

7. From the figure below, assume that a 2kg ball has a velocity of 5m/s when it rounds the top of the circle whose radius in 80 cm. a) What is the tension in the cord at that instant? b) What is the minimum speed at the top necessary to maintain circular motion?

Solids and Fluids Given : water = 1000kg/m3 , air = 1.29 kg/m3 , Hg = 13600 kg/m3 , g = 9.81 m/s2 1.An 80kg metal cylinder 2m long and with each end of area of 25cm stands vertically on one end. What pressure does the cylinder exert on the floor? 2. Consider a gas confined to a container by means of a piston of area 40cm 2 . If a perpendicular force 20N is exerted on the piston to keep the gas from expanding, find the gas pressure. 3. One arm of a U-tube containing oil of density 800kg/m3 is connected to a gas supply and the other is left open to the atmosphere. The difference in level between the two sides of the tube is 0.10m. By how much does the pressure of the gas exceed that of the atmosphere pressure? 4. Calculate the size of a load L which can be raised by an effort of 200N. Assuming that the frictional resistance at A is 20N and that at B is 50N. 5. The diagram shows a venturi tube which is an instrument used to measure the rate of flow of volume or mass in pipes. Oil of density 850kg/m3 is made to flow along a horizontal pipe whose cross-sectional area changes from 50mm2 to 25mm2. Manometers (using the same oil) are attached to the two sections of the pipe, and difference in levels of the oil in them is 40mm. Find the rate of flow of oil in the pipe.

6. A compressor pumps water at 1.2atm along pipe A with 6.0m2 area. The water then flows in a 2.0m2 pipe which connected to the pipe A. If the end of the second pipe is exposed to the atmosphere, calculate the speed of the water in both pipes. 7. In a factory, a smoke is pumped with an excess pressure of 3.01x105 Pa through a pipe of cross-sectional area 6.0 cm2. This smoke ascends 10 m and flows out to the air through a small pipe of cross-sectional area 4.0 cm2. Calculate (a) the speed of the chemical fluid in the small pipe. (b) volume flow rate.
