If a fine hole is made in the bottom of the ball, what will be its effect on the time period of the pendulum? 2. Which of the following functions of time represent (a) simple harmonic motion and (b) periodic but not simple harmonic? Give the period for each case. (1) sin t cos t (2) sin2 t 3. A particle executes SHM of amplitude 4 cm. and T = 4 sec. What is the time taken by it to move from positive extreme position to half the amplitude? 4. A horizontal spring block system of (force constant k ) and mass M executes SHM with amplitude A. When the block is passing through its equilibrium position an object of mass m is put on it and the two move to together. Find the new amplitude and frequency of vibration. 5. A particle is performing SHM along a straight line. When the particle is at the distances x1 and x2 with respect to the equilibrium position, it has velocities as v1 and v2 respectively. The block is pulled to a distance x = 10 cm from its equilibrium position at x = 0 on a frictionless surface from rest at t = 0. Calculate the kinetic, potential and total energies of the block when it is 5 cm away from the mean position. 7. In case of simple harmonic motion (a) at what displacement the kinetic and potential energies are equal (b) what fraction of total energy is kinetic and what fraction is potential when displacement is one half of the amplitude. 8. If it is slightly displaced downwards, prove that its motion is SHM and determine its time period. 9. A spring balance has a scale that reads from 0 to 50 kg. The length of the scale is 20 cm. A body suspended from this balance, when displaced and released, oscillates with a period of 0.6 s. What is the weight of the body? 10. A spring having with a spring constant 1200 N m1 is mounted on a horizontal table as shown in Fig.

A mass of 3 kg is attached to the free end of the spring. The mass is then pulled sideways to a distance of 2.0 cm and released. Determine (i) the frequency of oscillations, (ii) maximum acceleration of the mass, and (iii) the maximum speed of the mass. 11. Figures correspond to two circular motions. The radius of the circle, the period of revolution, the initial position, and the sense of revolution (i.e. clockwise or anti-clockwise) are indicated on each figure. Obtain the corresponding simple harmonic motions of the x-projection of the radius vector of the revolving particle P, in each case.
