he Jack Webster Foundation offers eligible BC journalists the opportunity to attend the Poynter Institute in Florida for short-term professional development courses or to create a self-defined fellowship for research or enhancement of skills. Sixty-one BC journalists have received fellowship funding from the Jack Webster Foundation. Many have attended the Poynter Institute for courses such as Managing People and Plans for Breaking News, Leadership for New Managers, TV Power Reporting: Telling Stronger Stories, Online Leadership Seminar, Poynters Leadership Academy, Backpack Journalist, and Essential Skills for the Essential Journalist.
How to Apply
Poynter Institute Fellowship You will apply for the Fellowship and, if selected, you will then apply to the Poynter for admission into the seminar that you wish to attend and one alternative in case your first choice is not available. The Poynter website outlines the steps necessary to apply.

Please provide the following in triplicate: Completed application form Current resume A statement or essay of 250-500 words describing your daily duties, the relevance of the seminar to your job, your goals for the seminar and how you will apply the training back in your newsroom. From an Investigative camp at Missouri School of Journalism participate to research for a documentary, the Jack Webster Self Defined Fellowship Foundation welcomes applications that assist BC journalists in pursuing professional development. One Poynter Institute fellowship award will be presented in the name of the late Don Matheson, a former BC reporter. This fellowship is designed for a BC-born journalist. Please send your completed application form along with your current resume, covering letter, details about your project and a budget to the Jack Webster Foundation. Three reference letters are required as well. For complete requirements, see the application form on page two.
Eligibility
A British Columbia news journalist that is a resident and/or a fulltime employee or correspondent for a BC print, broadcast or an online news organization is eligible to apply. Also, self-employed or freelance journalists whose work has been aired or published continuously over a three-year period are eligible for a Jack Webster Foundation fellowship. Applications from BC journalism educators are also welcome.
Fellowship Funding
Up to a total of $12,000 will be available. The Jack Webster Foundation will make the final determination as to the amount and division of the funds depending on the submissions received.
Selection
The Jack Webster Foundation will announce the recipients by the end of March, 2014. Recipients will have until February 28, 2015 to complete their fellowships, though recipients may request an extension.
