OPTIMIZATION WHAT IS OPTIMIZATION

Process optimization is the discipline of adjusting a process so as to optimize some specified set of parameters without violating some constraint. The most common goals are minimizing cost, maximizing through put, and/or efficiency. This is one of the major quantitative tools in industrial decision making. When optimizing a process, the goal is to maximize one or more of the process specifications, while keeping all others within their constraints. Optimization is the act of obtaining the best result under given circumstances. In design, construction, and maintenance of any engineering system, engineers have to take many technological and managerial decisions at several stages. The ultimate goal of all such decisions is either to minimize the effort required or to maximize the desired benefit. Since the effort required or the benefit desired in any practical situation can be expressed as a function of certain decision variables, optimization can be defined as the process of finding the conditions that give the maximum or minimum value of a function. TYPES OF OPTIMIZATIONS: There are three types of optimations 1. Mathematical Optimization: it can be further classified into following categories Calculus methods Statistical decision theory Regression analysis Calculus of variations Markov processes Cluster analysis, pattern Nonlinear programming Queueing theory recognition Geometric programming Renewal theory Design of experiments Quadratic programming Simulation methods Discriminate analysis Linear programming Reliability theory (factor analysis) Dynamic programming Integer programming Stochastic programming Separable programming Multiobjective programming Network methods: CPM and PERT

Engineering Optimization:
Engineering Optimization is the subject which uses optimization techniques to achieve design goals in engineering It is also called design optimization. Its topics include structural design (e.g., pressure vessel design, welded beam (design), shape optimization, topological optimization (e.g., airfoil), inverse optimization, processing planning, product design and others.
