    Aquaponics is advanced, organic hydroponics, the NASA developed technology for re-cycling waste water and fish food for a generating. 80% of the globe's fresh water is used for growing food. What with the human population explosion, to feed the 8 billion of us (in a decade or two will grow to 10-15 B, we need food, and for that we need water. Aquaponics is a possible solution. You start with fish fry, nuture them and then feed them, and for their FCR, Food conversion ratio is 1.2 to 1.5, i.e. for every 1.5 kilograms of feed the fish will put on 1 kg of weight. The problem is that as the fish grows, it eats and creates waste, in the water. The waste water is toxic, and unless fresh water is flooded in the fish die. In aquaponics, using organic processes the waste water, is converted into plant nutrients. Plants like lettuce, tomatos, cucumbers etc are grown, in the water (NO SOIL needed), and the roots suck up the nutrients, , and grow, often at accelerated rates. (1.5 to 3 times !). The plant thereby cleans up the water, which goes back to the fish tank. So the water is re-cycled, and you only need more water to make up for leakages and evaporation losses. A small pump, does the water circulation, , no tractors, "rich fertile" soil needed, pesticides (in a green house), needed. Plant, harvest the vegges, and the fish ! It can even be done on urban rooftops !

    So far the days are still cool outside. But yes, it's been sunny and without ventilation, the plants would fry. Check out the vents at each end of the greenhouse in the videos, they open automatically when the inside temperature gets above 85F. Sometimes peak hits 90, then drops when vents open and remains stable at around 85....vents open more if T tries to go up, so T stays pinned at 85 with bright sun. Plan to grow all summer, w/ water mist cooling, we'll see, rt

    woodfirepower 1 month ago Hello, Macspud28...........We just now introduced the fish. Up to now, to grow the lettuce, we've added worm castings, Maxi crop kelp, iron chelate (many aquaponics tend to lack iron so we just added some). And to cycle the system to get ready for the fish, we have been adding ammonia, just pure straight ammonia in water as a concentrate. Now that the fish are in, we stopped adding ammonia, let ammonia and nitrite levels drop to zero, then added the babies. Now we will add organic food. rt
