Glossary

A series whose consecutive terms have a common difference A straight line that a curve approaches more and more closely but never reaches A straight line connecting two points on a curve A numerical factor multiplying a term in an algebraic equation In an arithmetic series, the difference between any term and the preceding term A quantity whose value is fixed The term in an expression which has no variable component, e.g. 3 in x3 2x + 3 A set of numbers that determine the location of a point in a given reference system The values of a variable in an inequality at which the inequality becomes true/false A polynomial in which the highest power of the unknown is the third power, e.g. x3 + 2x 7 An integral with finite upper and lower limits The number below the line in a fraction, showing the number of equal parts in the whole The rate of change of a function with respect to the independent variable The process of obtaining the derivative of a function The value of b2 4ac for the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 A mathematical relationship between two values called the input and the output, such that for each input there is precisely one output
