clutch putting at the end, Jim Furyk headed to the final round of the PGA Championship with a one-shot lead. Furyk shot a 2-under 68 on Saturday at Oak Hill, capped by an 18-foot birdie putt on the tough 17th hole and a gritty putt from the fringe to save par at No. 18. The 43-year-old American pumped his fist emphatically and headed off to the clubhouse, out front heading to Sunday in a

major for the first time since last years U.S. Open. At Olympic, he lost out on his second major title with two bogeys on the last three holes. Furyk was at 9-under 201. Jason Dufner, the 36-hole leader, followed a record-tying 63 with a 71 to drop a stroke off

the pace. Henrik Stenson was 7 under after a 69, with fellow Swede Jonas Blixt another stroke back following a 66. On a warm, sunny day when Oak Hill finally showed its bite, Furyk bounced back from a sluggish start to seize the top spot on the leaderboard. giving him another shot at adding to his lone major title in the 2003 U.S. Open. Beginning the day two strokes behind Dufner, Furyk lost even more ground with bogeys at the second and third holes. A birdie at the par-5 fourth turned things around, and he had only one stumble the

TIGERS WATCH
SATURDAY: Tigers 9, New York 3 FRIDAY: New York 4, Tigers 3 (10) TODAY: At New York TV/TIME: 1 p.m. FSD

NEW YORK Jim Leyland has nearly half a century in baseball. Torii Hunter is a five-time All-Star. Anibal Sanchez is a rising talent. Whatever the perspective, the opinion is the same: Miguel Cabrera is on a whole different level. Cabrera homered against the Yankees again and had three hits while playing on a bandaged leg and Torii Hunter connected and drove in four runs, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-3 victory over New York on Saturday. Its hard to believe what we are seeing, Leyland said. Im seeing things that are mind-boggling. Sanchez (10-7) tossed seven easy innings against a Yankees lineup that was without Alex Rodriguez. Manager Joe Girardi said he was giving the third baseman a day off after he struck out three times in his season debut in the

Bronx. Austin Jackson followed a four-hit, three-double night Friday with a homer and triple against the organization that drafted him. Don Kelly had a two-run single after Phil Hughes (4-11) was lifted in a four-run fifth to help the AL Central leaders win for the 17th time in 21 games since the All-Star break. Hunter and Kelly each had three of Detroits 17 hits and Victor Martinez had an RBI double. Lounging on a clubhouse couch Saturday morning, Cabrera was wearing a

big, square Band-Aid over the spot on his left shin where he fouled one of two balls Friday night before homering off Mariano Rivera to send the game into extra innings. Detroit lost that one to end a12-game win streak, but the Tigers rolled along Saturday behind the hobbled Triple Crown winner. Sore, Cabrera said after driving in his 109th run. Its a long season. You go through a lot of stuff with injuries. You got to try to hang in and battle. Cabrera singled in the first and connected in the third on an inside pitch for his 35th of the year. He singled against Hughes in the fifth, slowly working his way around the bases and scoring on Kellys two-run single in a four-run inning. Its not about talk, Cabrera said. Its about going out there and play. A-Rod, who bolted the ballpark beSee TIGERS, Page 2B

DETROIT It didnt take long for Ziggy Ansah to endear himself to this citys footballstarved masses just four plays into his professional career. The rookie defensive end read New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchezs mind which is like being intellectually stimulated by a comic book. Ansah anticipated a pass. He shed his blocker and, cat-like, quickly pounced. Ansah got his hands up and picked off Sanchezs pass. But he wasnt finished. Ansah waltzed 14 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. Welcome to the NFL, young man. I was so surprised, I didnt know what to do once I got to the end zone, Ansah said. Theres time for working on electrifying touchdown dances. What was more important as the Lions began another journey into the great unknown Friday was that Ansah provided a defensive explosiveness woefully missing a year ago. That was a nice way for

After three days of dueling, Allyson Geer of Brighton faced a make-it-or-else putt at the Junior All-Star at Forest Lake golf tournament on Thursday. It came on the first playoff hole, after she and Katherine Muzi of Walnut Creek, Calif., had tied after regulation play at 228. Muzi hit her approach shot

into the bunker, then chipped two within two feet of the cup. Geers approach shot stopped about 17 feet from the cup. I was putting uphill, and right after the hole it was all down hill, she said. If I had gone long, it probably would have gone off the green. She made the putt and won the event, held at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills. The event was sanctioned by the American Junior Golf Association, and Geer, who is 14, earned an exemption to the AJ-

GAs Junior All-Star Invitational, held Oct. 11-14 in Norman, Okla. It felt pretty good, she said of the victory in a phone conversation on Saturday. I had taken third and second (in previous AJGA tournaments), so I knew what it took to win to the very last moment, and I was able to execute and do what I needed to do. But it wasnt easy, she said. I struggled during the last day, she said of shooting 77 on the final day of the three-day
