February 2014

Teen DV Month For years, young people across the nation have organized to put a stop to dating abuse. With their adult allies, they achieved a major victory in 2005 when the importance of addressing teen dating abuse was highlighted in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The following year, Congress followed the lead of dozens of national, state and local organizations in sounding the call to end dating abuse. Both Chambers declared the first full week in February "National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Week." Then in 2010, they began dedicating the entire month of February to teen dating violence awareness and prevention. TeenDVmonth.org, hosted by Break the Cycle, the online hub for all national activities and promotion of Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in February, as well as the home of Break the Cycle and loveisrespect's annual public awareness campaign for TDVAM. The website offers resources for youth, adults and communities that want to plan awareness-raising activities in February. For more details, please call: 817-782-5287

What is Military Saves?

Military Saves, a component of the nonprofit America Saves and a partner in the Department of Defenses Financial Readiness Campaign, that seeks to motivate, support, and encourage military families to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth. The research-based campaign uses the principles of behavior economics and social marketing to change behavior. Military Saves encourages all service members, their families, and civilian employees to take the Military Saves pledge and for organizations to promote savings year-round and during Military Saves Week. Savers who take the pledge can opt to receive a monthly e-newsletter from Military Saves, as well as a quarterly e-newsletter from America Saves. Military Saves also works with FINRA Investor Education Foundation, the defense credit unions, military banks and other non-profit organizations to promote savings and debt reduction.

All Sailors separating, demobilizing or deactivating from an active-duty status of more than 180 days in length, are now required to participate in the Transition GPS (Goals, Plans, Succeed) program. Previously known as TAP (Transition Assistance Program), Transition GPS is a mandatory program aimed to better prepare service members to transition to civilian life and is slated to take effect, Nov. 19. All participants in Transition GPS will also develop an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) to measure their progress throughout transition and complete a DD Form 2648 or 2648-1 Pre-separation Counseling Checklist. Transitioning service members should talk with their chain of command and command career counselor to receive pre-separation counseling and to learn more about Transition GPS requirements.
