Situatedonthesummitofthecitadel,thisisatypicalOttomen, thelargesttobebuiltinthefirsthalfofthe19thcentury.The mosquewasbuiltinmemoryofTusunPasha,theoldestsonof MuhammadAliPasha,givingthemosqueitsname.Themosque issituatedonthesummitofthecitadel,andalongwiththe citadel,isoneofthelandmarksandtouristattractionsofCairo.It isstillusedaplaceofworshiptodaybytheMuslimsofCairoThe mosqueisoneofthemostidentifiablefeaturesofthecityand canbeseenwhenapproachingthecityfromalmostany direction.Themosqueisbuiltwithacentraldomesurroundedby foursmallandfoursemicirculardomes.Theminaretsofthe MuhammadAliMosqueareovereightymetershigh.Thehighest domeis52metershigh,withadiameterof21meters.The designoftheMuhammadAliMosqueisbasedonaplansimilar tothatoftheMosqueofSultanAhmadinIstanbul,andconsists oftwoparts,themosquetotheeastandanopencourtyardtothe west.Themosquehasthreeentrances,onthenorth,westand eastwalls.Thewesternentranceopensontothecourtyard.On thewestwallofthecourtyardisanironclock,givento MuhammadAlibytheFrenchKingLouisPhilippe,inexchange fortheobelisk.TheobeliskisnowinthePalacedelaConcorde, Paris.Currently,thecityofCairoisworkingtoconserveand protecttheAlabasterMosqueofMohamedAli.Themosques domeisundergoingcleaningandrestoration.Anewlighting systemfortheCitadelisbeingdonebyanItaliancompanyin threephases.Thefirstphase,thelightingofthemosqueof MohammadAli,iscomplete.Thenextphasewillbetolightthe whole1.5kilometresofthesurroundingwall,andthethirdphase istolighttheroadoftheCitadelfromtheentrancetotheend. VisitingtheCitadelisoneofCairoslandmarksanditsbest combinedwithvisitingAlHusseinMosqueandMosqueof al-RafaiwhicharelocatedjustbelowtheCitadel.Important! Womenmustcovertheirheads,sobringascarf.Shoulders mustalsonotbeexposed.Everyonehastoremovetheirshoes. Theoriginaloperahouse,Khedivial(Royal)OperaHouse openedin1869undertheorderofKhediveIsmailtocelebrate theopeningoftheSuezCanal.TheKhedivesoon commissionedanoperatoreflectancientEgyptianhistory, resultinginthefamedVerdiopera,Aida.TheKhedivialOpera HousewasthefirstontheAfricancontinenttoperformworld famousoperasandsymphonicmasterpieces.Itwascompletely destroyedbyafirein1971.Today,theCairoOperaHouseis partofthecountry'sNationalCulturalCenterwhoseaimisto promoteandencourageart,musicanddanceandtopreserve traditionalArabicmusic.Performancesofballet,operaor symphonicworksarestagedwithEgyptiancompaniesorin cooperationwithforeignensemblesorsoloists.Seminarsand culturalconferencescoveringawiderangeofartisticand intellectualissuesareheldregularly.
