SUCCESS FOR LUNCH! AHEAD OF 2010 EVENT

Lunch! enjoyed recent success at this years AEOs Excellence Awards ceremony. The food-to-go event scooped the best trade show award at the ceremony held at Wembley Stadium, an event attended by representatives from across the UKs exhibition industry. Commenting on the award, Madeleine Johnson, lunch!s Event Manager, said: Winning the Best Exhibition award is a fantastic reection of how quickly lunch! has become the essential event for the vibrant outofhome food and drink community and a brilliant reward for the team who have committed themselves to representing the industry. It is an amazing achievement for an exhibition that has only taken place twice to be endorsed as the best exhibition in the UK! The event is returning to Old Billingsgate, London, on 30 September-1 October for its third year running.

OJ beats Fast Food

Good news at last from the nutrition camp. High volumes of fast food is bad, but fast food consumed with a glass of orange juice is another story! It seems that a simple glass of OJ holds the potential to reduce the impact of high carbohydrate, high fat meals like many takeaways. The active ingredients responsible for these mitigating effects are avonoids, which can be found in virtually all fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, although orange juices powers arise from its high levels of two specic avonoids, naringenin and hesperidin. So what do avonoids do exactly? Their magic arises from their antioxidant powers, which are capable of reducing the levels of oxidation and inammation provoked by high carb, high fat food, and they also help to prevent blood vessel damage, as reported by a recent study (admittedly funded by citrus fruit producers!) conducted by endocrinologists from the University at Buffalo. The results showed that drinking orange juice with a meal high in fat and carbohydrates prevented the marked increases in inammation and free radicals that one would expect from such a meal. This is noteworthy because the high glucose and triglyceride levels that result from such inammation are known factors in the development of heart problems. These benets were not shown when study participants drank water or glucose with their meal. Indeed, free radicals increased an average of 62 per cent with water and 63 per cent with glucose, compared with just 47 per cent with orange juice. Even more encouragingly, orange juice, despite its naturally occurring fruit sugar content, appeared to inhibit the rise in a substance known as SOCS-3 which plays an important role in insulin resistance and the development of type 2 diabetes. So, although I am not of course advocating that you swap healthy eating for a diet of takeaways, it is interesting to learn that simply by adding a glass of orange juice to your meal or menu, you can help to mitigate the effects of high carb, high fat food such as pizza, pastries and many other processed meals. And as orange juice is of course also high in vitamin C, it seems that a glass of OJ really is a great start to the day. So go on, enjoy an OJ but just make sure that it is pure, unsweetened and preferably freshly squeezed.
