CONCAN CON-CAN

Starting in 2005, CON-CAN = Watch the soul or true

spirit of the directors) Movie Festival has marked its 5th
anniversary this year with the 7th edition, CORTO TOKYO
2010 . Looking back at our 1 st film festival, we were
genuinely blessed to have Mr. Jukka-Pekka Laakso,
Director of Tampere Film Festival (Finland), stand in as an
advisor. Without his words of wisdom and strong passion
for short lms, CON-CAN would not have lasted this long.
Since the beginning, we have been running CON-CAN
based on the premise of The world is one big family . We
have been showcasing unique, high-quality short films
from around the world and have grown to become one of
the most accredited web-based lm festivals. From 2011,
CON-CAN will undergo some drastic transformations but
we will continue to uphold our key principle of delivering
the true, uncensored messages of worldwide directors
to the global audience. We cannot express in words how
important all of your support to CON-CAN has been and
sincerely send our deepest appreciation. Finally, thank
you CON-CAN and the best of luck to the new CONCAN!!

CON-CAN

Tampere short lm festival has existed for 40 years and the world has changed a lot during that time. However it is
surprising how the basic ideas of Tampere have remained the same. What Tampere festival tries to remind, at least
once a year, that there are a lot of great lms in the world that people do not see, mainly because they do not fulll
the needs of commercial media.
Of course computers and internet have changed the environment a lot, and one can truly say that there are lots of
possibilities to see good short lms today. But as everyone knows, internet includes everything, the good the bad
and the ugly. And now the role of a lm festival is more to nd the things that are worth the time spent.
Of course with short lm festivals, the selection of lms is as important as the quality of individual lms. A festival
makes with the lms a statement, it shows what it thinks about the media that envelopes us today, and furthermore
it comments our world in general.
From the beginning I have followed with interest what CON-CAN is doing, how it is actually doing the same things
that Tampere has tried to do for decades, but truly in a new environment. I feel that we have same ideas about lm
festivals, the same goals and in many ways, looking our selection, simply and where it all comes together, same
taste on lms.
Ideally and ideologically Tampere lm festival was established to change the media environment, raise short lms to
a status in the world of cinema that they truly deserve. In a way we have failed, short lms are still in the marginal,
but we are still ghting to fulll the original idea and with other festivals like CON-CAN we hope to make an impact.

CON-CAN
CORTO TOKYO
2010

In 2010, the Online based International Short Film Festival, CON-CAN Movie Festival, has reached its 5th year.
From reviewing and selecting hundreds of lms sent from all over the world, we have once again noticed the true
meaning and importance of organizing a lm festival.
Under the dire economic conditions of Japan, people are starting to neglect the signicant cultural attributes within
the society. Hence, we would like to emphasize what contributions we can make as a lm festival in this time of crisis.
In these 5 years, we have encountered the powerful messages of directors worldwide through short film. The
year of 2010 was especially a year of accomplishment since we incorporated the elements of production into our
operation, which was accepted by many prestigious lm festivals around the world. As a result, CON-CAN Movie
Festival has created a global festival network which will allow us to aggressively ponder the future of this lm festival.
For instance, this year s competition program, CORTO TOKYO 2010 , is one of our new ventures resulted from
this year s experiences. We feel as if this has been a year of new beginnings on so many levels.
Looking at the innite amount of lms in a global spectrum, our festival is still a speck of sand in a vast desert. Our
overall curation is also still immature in comparison to other major lm festivals. However, by offering a place of
communication between the audience and director through hybrid screening events, we hope that our audiences
will receive a small tip and interpret it into their own benet for tomorrow.
We will continue to provide the world with a platform that allows us to rethink the media we know as lm. From reinterpreting lms from all over the world, people will be able to rediscover their own culture and provide themselves
with the opportunity to create their own new standard of cultural expression. This in itself is what our sponsors,
supporters and staff have been working hard day and night to achieve.

The Refusal of Limitations

CON-CAN

Chris Fujiwara
Film Critic
Advisor, CON-CAN Movie Festival

Because short lms form a category by themselves, commercially speaking, and because this category is of little
commercial importance, the short-lm maker is not bound by the rules of genre within which makers of featurelength lms operate. A short lm may perhaps call itself a documentary, a ction, an experimental work, or
whatever, but the application of such labels is a purely arbitrary and unnecessary attempt to limit in advance the
area in which the lm will move.
Even if the short filmmaker accepts such a limitation, the conventions that usually regulate the genres of longform cinema do not apply to short lms. The inanities of the three-act structure, the plot point, the character
arc, and other idiotic superstitions that get drilled into the heads of lm students have no place in the world of
short lms. Such so-called rules were formulated out of the traditions and requirements of mainstream commercial
feature-length cinema and represent the abstract form of that cinema at its most deadening.
Any true lmmaker is obliged to uncover the logic that any sequence of images and sounds generates. The work of
the lmmaker is to extend this logic, confront it with a different logic, or destroy it... Compromising this work out of
obedience to mythical rules of storytelling produces only imitations of imitations.
In feature-length lmmaking, the need to recognize and work creatively with the formal and material parameters that
belong to each individual project may become obscured by commercial pressures, but in a short lm, there is no
excuse for not facing up to this requirement. If the short lm has the great luxury of being able to determine its own
form and its own rules, this luxury is also a great responsibility.
Watching a short lm, it is immediately obvious whether the lmmaker is working honestly with the form and materials
of the project, or merely responding to external pressures and repeating conventional ways of thinking about image
and sound. There is no way to hide the lmmaker s immediate response to the basic challenge of cinema.
It might be said, then, that a good short lm is harder to make than a good feature lm. I don t know if this is true
or not. I think that, currently, the world of short lms probably offers a wider range of themes and formal approaches
than the world of feature lms, but this is because of practical reasons and circumstances, not because of a general
law of aesthetics.

What lies beneath the skin of short lm

Short lm is the origin of our lm history. The rst lms were created by the Lumire brothers, such as the Workers
Leaving the Lumire Factory (1895) or Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (1895), and they were less than 50 seconds
long but made a huge impact worldwide. Hence, 2 reel lms (10 to 20 min. in duration) became the mainstream for
lm production up until the 1920 s.
Throughout its history, short lms have developed various forms of narrative technique and they are still used today
in feature lms. One of the most popular techniques is Last-Minute-Rescue which ends the lm with a climactic
turn of events.
This technique was perfected by D. W. Grifth, the father of American cinema, and is common among action lms
such as the 007 series where James Bond always defeats the enemy at the last scene even when all the cards
are stacked against him. To build up the suspense in order to have a climactic ending in the limited amount of time
of a short lm is a challenge and requires a rened but dynamic ending.
A distinctive characteristic of short lm, in comparison to feature lms, is that it embeds themes directly into the footage
itself in order to derive a powerful impression. As a result, a single scene cut will possess multiple messages with some
being hidden, similar to the structure of a poem. It s an exceptional approach which breaks the ground rules of lm
making but takes full advantage of imagery through the synchronization (or asynchronization) of audio-visual elements.
A great example of this is Fleeting Images which was awarded the 6th CON-CAN Movie Festival Grand Prix.
In addition, the theme in short lm often gets converged and condensed to stand out the message clearly. This
example can also be seen in many of the past awarded lms such as "Ata" (5th CON-CAN Grand Prix), or "Chain
Gestures" (5th CON-CAN Jury Award), which both lms were made to visualize compelling messages.
But the literacy of short lm is subjective and leave to every audience. We are free to embrace a lm in any way we
desire since that is what essentially powers the creation of unique and inventive lms.

Between Art and Entertainment

CON-CAN

Daniel Vadocky
Film Critic, Lecturer, Program advisor at Art Film Fest
Jury, CON-CAN Movie Festival

We are in the midst of rapid changes all around the world. Information ows at aspeed of light and our planet
dwindles due to the fast internet, television and radio development. Little by little, cultural boundaries fade out with
lm being in the lead of this global unication. Short lm enjoys the advantage of taking less time to be produced
than afeature lm and thus it can promptly respond to every change and spread the very next day to the entire
world via internet.
In general, what is said about feature lms can be applied even on alarger scale to short lms - they only deal with
restricted number of recurrent themes, motifs, and formal means of expression and lmmakers always try to present
their own perception in a new and original way. They try to develop the features of their characters, to interpret a
well-knit story and at the same time to convey some message or a mixture of moods like frustration, disaffection,
repulsion, fear, grief, and not always plain joy or happiness to the audience - all of these in a condensed form. It is
far from easy to be able to express oneself in a concise, clear but original and compelling way. What is fascinating
about short lms is the heterogeneity of the invariables. Every year, thousands of short stories and anecdotes in
form of ction and animated lms or documentaries are produce and, frankly, they feel like arefreshing break from
afeature-length mainstream. If they manage to detach themselves from the growing commercial pressure, they are
the future of entertainment. Also, they are asound reection of our society, our environment, feelings and emotions
of areal world. They abound in information from the history and present of our planet as much as of the lm itself.
It is essential to watch short lms and talk about them within our own intentions/limits so we can pronounce them
asingular genre of art. And that is what they really are.

From Kyoto : Challenge to

Without talking in depth about the signicance of short lms, it is needless to say that short lms often portray
the thoughts, purpose, and message of the lmmakers. This is what makes short lms so beautiful. The useless
explanations and crowd-pleasing uff are removed and what's left is an incisive story that often touches the heart.
The shorter the film, the completeness of the concept behind it becomes more and more important. How to
illustrate the concept clearly with minimal waste or distraction. This is the life of short lms. In other words, short
lms are like the Haiku of lms.
The Kyoto International Indie Film Festival is held under the auspices of the CON-CAN Movie Festival. From the
numerous genres of short lms, we particularly choose to screen the lms including a strong message, as opposed
to artistic or entertaining manner. Unlike the ltered information fed to us by the corporations and the mass media,
these lms are the true voices of life in our world.
What do these voices speak of ? Emotion, anger, poverty, distress, dreams Many different worlds are revealed.
The picture quality may not be perfect due to low funds, but that s alright. More importantly, we need to ask: What
is this person trying to say? This is how we learn. This is how we know.
I am now on a mission to build digital distribution of outstanding short lms that I have come across at lm festivals
over the years. I am hoping to complete a new form of educational material that will further the understanding,
ability to think, and imagination of people around the world. A lm industry that functions only through commercial
lm distribution does not have any signicant to me anymore.
