District Update Area 3 Superintendent Julie Martel We are focusing on Common Core implementation. Trustee Scott Barnett No cuts from the state this year, but we still have a $50 million shortfall projected for next year. MB Cluster schools have been making much progress. I believe that in a couple of years people will be clamoring to get their kids into MB Cluster schools. At 8:30 am tomorrow, California Coastal Commission (CCC) hearings at Catamaran Hotel will include vote on MBHS stadium project. CCC Staff report recommends approval with significant restrictions on the use of the lights. The District has prepared a 15-minute presentation. We are hoping the commissioners will reduce the lighting restrictions, but our primary goal is to advocate for project approval. Everyone is encouraged to attend and speak if they wish. School Safety and Security Update Deputy Superintendent Phil Stover Mr. Stover provided a handout (see post below) explaining the Districts ongoing assessment of all schoo ls with regard to safety and security. A District team, including school security experts, has already conducted a pilot program of assessments at 18 campuses, including PB Middle School. In the next 6 months, assessments will be made at all MBCC Minutes 1-09-14 page 1

other schools in the District. Assessments will include visual inspections and soliciting input and feedback from teachers, students and staff. Everyone, including parents, may give their input directly to Mr. Stover via email at schoolsafety@sandi.net Mr. Stover also suggests that each school get the message out to their families and students and ask for their input on safety and security concerns, which can then be relayed to the assessment team when they arrive. Individual schools and parent organizations may request to have Mr. Stover give a presentation to their groups. Assessment results and recommendations will be presented to the SDUSD Board of Trustees in September, 2014. SDUSD Police Chief Littlejohn Pacific Beach schools are topnotch and very safe. Having a police car parked at a school does not mean there are problems; it represents the routine police presence that helps keep our schools and kids safe. SDUSD has 43 sworn police officers; 7 officers are assigned to our area, which encompasses Pacific Beach to San Diego High (south) and Hoover High (east). Police dispatchers are monitoring surveillance cameras at schools 24 hours a day. Chief Littlejohn can be contacted at rlittlejohn@sandi.net or 619-725-7000. Roundtable discussion of various topics ensued. Adjourned 7:36 Next meeting is February 6, 2014, 6pm at MBHS
