The Vertical Interdisciplinarity
INM
INM Leibniz-Institut für Neue Materialien

In order to develop products for materials appliers, or to developed

turn-key technologies, especially for small and medium-size enterprises,
the so-called vertical interdisciplinarity is required

This needs the following disciplines

Chemistry (synthesis chemistry, physical chemistry, colloidal chemistry

organic chemistry, polymer chemistry)
Physics (experimental physics)
Materials science
engineering disciplines (chemical engineering, mechanical engineering,
electric engineering)
Modelling/computer science
Production technology
Quality assurance
Patents and licensing/IP strategies

If this system is established a well organized management basis,

The duty of based technologies can be developed for many industrial
branches on the basis of nanoparticles

In order to realize this, two other requirements are necessary

Interdisciplinarity staff, which has to be eucated and trained by an

internal education system (this type ofeducation is not carried
out the universities)

Appropriate equipment, which comprises

Laboratory equipment
Analytics and testing
Pilot plant equipment: nano materials synthesis,
processing equipment to materials (e.g. for ceramics, nanocomposites,
materials for surface technologies) ,“fine tuning“ techniques like
photolithography, micro patterning, holographic techniques and others
surface and coating technologies

This leads to the following structure

Laboratory scale work

Various processing technologies

Product and process technology development

Scaling up to a technical level in the application center

The consequence
Nanoparticle technology as innovation tool (chemical nanotechnology)
Surface technology as technology outlet
Application oriented basic research through Ph.D. work
Establishment of engineering oriented to disciplines in addition to the basic
disciplines like chemistry or physics
Building up of an appropriate contract, patent and license strategy

Application center „Wet chemical coating technologies“ as an indispensable

instrument for technology development and technology transfer
