University Circle

Background/History: In 1799 Nathaniel Doan a member of an expedition of the Connecticut

Land Co. opened a tavern on what is now East 107th and Euclid Avenue. The area became
known as Doan's Corners. In the late 1800s, both Western Reserve University and Case School
of Applied Science moved to the area. By the early 1900s, land donations by Jeptha Wade (Wade
Oval) and John D. Rockefeller allowed for the development of the area’s other institutions. This
area was the location of a streetcar turnaround in the late 1800s, which, along with the
universities, gave it the name University Circle. It is also home to the Cleveland Orchestra and
many of the city's museums as well as some interesting and diverse restaurants, coffee shops, and
nightspots.

Demographics: Over 2.5 million people come to University Circle each year to work, play,
and/or pray. In addition, approximately 12,000 call this neighborhood home.

Housing: Housing in University Circle ranges from early 20th century houses, converted to
doubles to luxury condos and apartments. Among the renovation projects in the area is the Park
Lane Villas, a former early 20th century Beaux Arts residential hotel has been turned into luxury
apartments. Park Lane Apartments are directly across the street (E. 107th ) from Epworth-Euclid
Church.

Attractions: University Circle is home to many of Cleveland’s cultural, educational and health
institutions. Among the cultural institutions are the Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of
Natural History, Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Western Reserve Historical
Society and the Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum. Educational and health institutions
include Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Institute of
Art, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals and the Ronald McDonald House.

Cleveland Museum of Art - Established in 1913, the Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the
United States' most important art museums and the only major museum in the country to still
offer free admission to its permanent collection. (Please note: the permanent collection is
currently closed during construction.)

 Cleveland Museum of Natural History - is a treasure trove of over 4 million specimens,

with exhibits that include Dinosaur bones, natural gemstones and fossils.

 Western Reserve Historical Society - consists of two gracious, late 19th century mansions
and extensive exhibits on the settlement of Cleveland (then, Cleaveland) and the surrounding
Western Reserve. Downstairs is the Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum, with dozens of
vintage and historic vehicles and planes.

 Cleveland Botanical Garden - See the magnificent glasshouse and ten acres of diverse
outdoor gardens, including a special children's garden, an herb garden, and a woodland garden.

 Cleveland Children's Museum - Established in 1981, this is an interesting and interactive

place for kids and adults to learn and have fun together.

Education: University Circle stays true to its name by being the host of Case Western Reserve
University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Art.
