This month, we will try and © understand all about sensors. Sensors are at the heart of all digital cameras ust as film is for film cameras. Sensors have largely been one of two types; CCD (Charged Coupled Device) and CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor). CCDs ‘were introduced first and are stil featured in many compact cameras and D-SLRs. In many consumer applications, however, they have now been replaced by CMOS - for example, in camera phones, mirror-less ‘cameras and even in D-SLRs. Although constructed diferently, CMOS works ina similar fashion to CCDs. ‘The reason for popularity of the CMOS sensor is that CMOS sensors have more technology incorporated into them than in CCDs, Initially this meant that the technology took up more of the sensor's surface, thereby decreasing the area sensitive to light However, the advantage was that the charge accumulated at each photosite could be converted to voltage straightaway. In the case of CCDs, the charge would be shifted from pixel to pivel Sensor Sizes Sensors come in a variety of sizes, For instance, the Apple iPhone 45 sports a —— 360m ——>+ + 23.2 ——§> fattane Ewe ae A) action | gh-rty SLi vam = 113.2" Type sensor (4.5mm x 3.4mm). Panasonic's LX7 and Nikon's P7700 feature a 1/1.7" Type sensor (7.4mm x 5.6mm), The Micro Four Thirds system developed by Olympus and Panasonic uses a 17.3x 13mm sensor; the APS-C sensor would come ina size of 23.7 x 15.7mm, Finally, a full frame sensor would be 36 x 24mm in size, Sensors are manufactured by all the leading manufacturers ike Canon, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic, Pixels Inthe early days of digital cameras, there was a mad rush to offer a high number of megapiiels in order to produce enlargements without visible image degradation. This rmad pixel rush has slowed down in recent times although every year continues to see a rise in megapixel counts. Today's D-SLRs commonly sport over 20 megapixels and compact cameras between 12 and 18 megapixels. However, pivels alone cannot determine image quality. ‘Asa thumb rule, a larger pixel can accept more light than a smaller one. This means a better signal-to-noise ratio and therefore, Images with less noise and higher dynamic range. Too few pels on a sensor compromise resolution. Too many create image noise and dynamic range also suffers. The best option, therefore, isto have a compromise between the two, It must be realized that ultimate picture quality is determined by many ‘other factors apart from the quality cof the sensor. The accompanying software, the consistency of operation and the quality of optics also play a large part in determining ultimate image quality Again, as faras sensors are concerned, you have front vs back illuminated sensors Back illuminated sensors move GOlsmart PhotographylMay 2013 the wiring behind the substrate which helps them to capture more light. Crop Factor The smaller the sensor use, the more are the peripheral areas that are cut away. This ads to a smaller angle of view. Typically herefore, when calculating the focal power of a lens, one has to apply a 1.5 to 1.6x crop factor for APS-C type sensors and a 2x factor for Micro Four Thirds sensors. A full frame sensor will have no crop factor, Colour Filter Array Sensors cannot see colour; so in order to determine information on colour, a colour Learning e—_—_____ filter array (CFA) sits over the sensor Light passes through the CFA be photosite. Other Unconventional arrangements h: been adopted by A Foveon in order to lm and Sigmal capture full colour Not: The above colours may not be accurately displayed since the printing is dene in CHK information at each photo site. Prof. Edgerton (of MIT, USA) Is regarded as the pioneer of this type of photography, known as high speed photography* One of his photographs even shows a builtin fight! Fortu- nately, high speed photography has moved out ofthe realm of laboratories and is now within the reach of most of Us This article shows, step by step, how you can catch that elusive moment of a splashing drop. Before you begin, make sure ofthe following 1. Mount your camera on a sturdy tripod, 2. Use a lens with a focal length between 50mm and 100mm (equivalent 35mm focal length). f you are using an APS cropped sensor D-SLR, use a focal length of 55mm at least. 3. Set focus to auto. 4, Set your camera to manual exposure mode. The metering mode (Matrix or Centersweighted, etc) isnot relevant since you will be determining the exposure with the help of the histogram display. 5, Set the aperture to ff8 or f/11 for adequate depth of field 6.You can set the shutter speed up to X-Sync. Ifyou are not sure what this is, set the shutter speed to 1/125 sec. 7. Set your camera to the lowest base ISO for the best picture quality 8. Use JPEG format with highest pel count (large setting) wth least compression (fine setting). 9. Set saturation, contrast and sharpness to minimum levels, You can easily add them in post-processing ifneedeed. 10.Set the release made to single frame advance (see the text for more ‘options) and shutter release to remote fring Preparation is the key! Drops must fall ata predictable rate, one after another, to increase the chance of getting the timing right. For this, you can use a simple set-up lke a polythene bag filed with water. You can pierce the bag with a needle to get the drops falling. However, itis dificult to get the right sized hole to allow the drops to flat the rate you want. Ifthe hole you have pricked is too small then drops wil fill too slowly and lessen your chances to capture what you want, If they are falling too fast then the water on which the drops are fling will not settle and you will not get the effect you desire, Also, the timing window to release the shutter will be too short. For this project, | used a burette (Picture 1), that is commonly used in chemistry labs You can get these for a few hundred rupees from shops that sell scientific apparatus or you can borrow from your local school)! You can adjust the flow on the burette to get the drops falling exactly a the rate you want. AN alternative is the device that is used to provide drip to alling people. You can buy this from pharmaceutical shops. 62Ismart PhotographylMay 2013 Understanding Photography —_$<£@o i __ Setup and Lighting object ite a ruler) vertically at the Next, you need a way to trigger The setup is schematically shown center ofbow! and focus onit _the strobe. The light output from the strobe is of very short duration (can be as less as 1/25,000 of a second) and is © way faster than the camera shutter. Inother words, itis not the shutter ‘operation that freezes the drop but the very short light pulse from ¥ the flash! Radio trigger: This isthe best and the most expensive option with no hassles of wires. Make sure that there is no ambient light present in the room, Fire the builtin flash (if you are using it for triggering) and see that ts lights not affecting the image. If needed keep a black card in front ofthe bulttin flash to block the light from it Now, you need to set the exposure, Switch on the strobe, trigger it in one of the three ways described and take a test shot. Check the histogram and seeits distribution. you are using a bowl of light colour then you will get a shanp peak (since most of the frame iscofa single tone) towards the right. I you are using a darker toned bowl the ppeak willbe similar but wll be more to the left (Remember, the middle of the histogram corresponds to mid tone approximately). You can adjust the output level ofthe strobe til you get the right histogram, Use an IR remote control to release the shutter. This makes releasing shurter far easier than pressing the shutter release button, Please check your camera manual to see where the IR (receiver) port is located and make sure that the IR release is pointed towards this port to ensure proper operation (Alternatively you can alo use a remote control cord too) Also, as you wil see shortly there is no need for you to see through the viewfinder when you are releasing the shutter. ‘When to release the shutter? Yes, as you would imagine, releasing the shutter atthe exact instant i really the toughest part. Anticipation i everything here! If you can see the actual moment (the splash) that you wanted to capture then it means that you have missed capturing it! Your reaction time plus the inherent delay cof the camera means thatthe image capture will occur well after that decisive moment, So, the trick is really to anticipate and release the shutter an instant before the splash occurs. This requires a bit of trial and error but its. not dificult inthis digtal age since you can see the results instantly and adjust your timing window to gett right. Doas follows Firstlet the drops flow very slow/y Release the shutter when the drop is about micway between the burette and bow, Take some shots and checkhow the splash is appearing I you are cary then release the shutter after the crop crosses the midpoint if you ae late do the oppeste, You can narrow the tning window ths way Dont try to release the shutter by looking atthe splash inthe bow. You will never capture it! You should get the right timing ina few tries, More importantly, the sight differences in releasing the shutter due to different human reaction times will produce different types of splashes some of which will be attractive. (See Pictures 3 t0 5). Isthis the only way, you may as, to release the shutter? There are indeed a couple of more methods avaiable. Let us look at them briefly ‘One method is to put your camera on continuous frame advance and then take anumber of shots, Here you need to be aware of one important fact Since you are using a strobe, ithas to recharge before it can fire again. Hence, continuous frame advance is generally not possible since the strobe needs a definite time to recharge. However, strobes that can fre upto five frames per second (fps) are now available, Your ‘camera's built-in flash will not be able to. hep up with this sort of frame rate. So, youneed to trigger the strobe either using a wired connection or a radio trigger (as already described). f you are using continuous mode, | suggest you use JPEG rather than Raw file format since the frame rate generally comes down with the latter. Note that this method will not guarantee you a great result but will definitely increase the ‘odds of capturing the right instant The second method completely elirsnates any tial and error. Here, youwill need an external controller. To this controller you can attach a sound sensitive interface which conveys that the event has occurred from the sound generated by the splash. The controller then releases the shutter after a finite delay that can be set by you. Normally this wll be in the order of millseconds (that is,thousandths of a second). By adusting the timer you can get very consistent results. Normally as a hobbyist you don't requite this gadget. However, if you want to do this type of photography on alarge scale you can think of acquiring a controller with a suitable interface based on your needs. The end result should look something like what is shown in Picture 3, 4 and 5. Variations: You can try colored water or other liquids for different effects. You can also use different colored or patterned backdrops to get interesting results, Slightly denser fluids like mik can also be used. In the case of elderly people, usually their grand-children play the role of their ‘emotional keys! Remember the example of an internationally acclaimed photographer Yusuf Karsh, who Learning o—_—____ palled out the cigar from the ‘mouth ofthe British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and threw just to get the expressions he desired, What has to be leamed from this example is that shooting a portrait isnot just asking a person fost in frontof a camera, putting ona portrait lens and then shooting with a standardised lighting, Portraiture largely involves controling the emotions of the person in front of your camera! The new lens is called AFS Nikkor 80-400 F/4,5-5.6G ED VR. This focal length is probably the most sought after by nature and wildlfe photographers not bom with a silver spoon, The earlier version had some chinks in its armour, mage quality tapered off after it id and the lens collar left alot to be desired, The older version, without the Silent Wave Motor, was very slow in autofocussing Lets see ow the reached the 300mm er w avatar performs on our test bench -by-side visual comparison Crane Remene Length (at 80mm) Approx. 175mm Approx. 205mm. A rubber lens mount gasket prevents water splashes and dust from getting into the lens/camera body. A raised white plastic dat helps to align the lens to the camera body and is very useful in low light conditions. A deep flower- type lens hood is provided, Fiter size is 77mm and the lens is made in Jap Ergonomics Itis possible to hand-hold this lens for a while and the 4-stop VR definitely helps in achieving higher number of acceptably sharp images. Do note however, that the 8 times increase in image size at the longest end (12 times if you consider DX format) as compared APS NIKKOR 80-4000 toa normal 50mm, will certainly cause many hand-held images to be of less than ideal sharpness. Hence whenever possible, use of a sturdy tripod is recommended ‘Coupled with a Nikon D800 body, the lens was very easy and convenient to use (but | do use a tripod mast of the time), The fact thatthe 200m ring is towards the filter end, made zooming much easier (the earlier version has the zoom ring towards the camera body, which is quite inconvenient). Since the lens has an IF (internal focussing) design its actual focal length is less than quoted. If you compare the view at 400mm, using the new and the older lens, you will notice that the angle of view covered by the new lens is wider than that covered by the older version of the lens. This could be of concern to some users. Since the lens has If, use of graduated ND filters and Circular Polarsers is easier (the front element does not rotate while focussing). Performance Overall, we were impressed by the AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f145-5.6G ED VR lens. Itis a much better performer compared to the earlier version. The lens’ speed has not changed (itis stil a ‘Slow’ lens at f/4.5-5.6). Compared tothe earlier version, we could definitely see much better contrast 102Ismart Photographylitay 2 and sharpness, even withthe lens wide ‘open. This s very important from a wildlife photographers point of view, whose basic exposure fora frontlit average toned subjectis often 1/1000 sec at f5.6, But the earlier version had progressive softness afer it crossed 300mm, So what about the new lens? Well the new lens is acceptably sharp at 400mm even wide open! Stopped down half to one stop, itis very sharp. But how sharp is sharp? You cannot compare the sharpness ofthis lens to, say, a Nikon 300mm f/28 or a Nikon 200-400mm fi4 lens. Both these lenses are much more expensive than the 80-400mm in question. Also, dor't forget that a zoom lens (the 200- 400mm is also a zoom lens but itis ina different league) is complex in design ‘as compared to a prime (non zoom) lensand hence much more difficult to manufacture ‘What about the lens collar? Does the re-designed collar offer better stability when tripod mounted? Yes, it does, but we feel Nikon could have designed it even better Its still not perfect. Anyway, lam sure that some independent accessory manufacturer (lke Kirk Enterprise or Really Right Stuff) will do the needful, That of course will add to the already high cost of this lens. Thanks to the Silent Wave Motor, autofocus speed has definitely improved, though the lens struggled to achieve AF when contrast was low. Slight pin-cushion distortion was observed at 80 and 105mm settings Flare was observed in against-the-light shots but thankfully, we did not observe Lens Review a ‘AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm (45-56 G ED VR any chromatic aberration, Darkening of ‘comers was noticed with the lens wide. open at 80mm. In conclusion | must say that the AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens offers a big improvement in image quality over the earlier version ts focal range covers everything from portraits to landscape to wildlife and is a'must- have! for naturefwildlife photographers who do not have the money or the inclination to lug the heavy 500s and 600s! Value for Money The AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f14.5- S.6G ED VRis available at an MRP of Rs.1,79,950. just as a comparison, the earlier model sold (stil sels) at an MRP of Rs, 96,950. So wihy this enormous difference? The new lens incorporates a Silent Wave Motor, Internal Focussing, Nano coating, special lens elements (4x ED, 1x Super ED, against only 3x60 clementsin the eatlier version), 4-stop advantage in VR, improved minimum focus distance and newer technology! FINAL SCORE But should these improvements cost 2s83,000 more? We hope that such a price does not encourage the grey market. With Smartphones taking such a prime position inthe field, no photographic magazine is complete without covering this segment. In an ongoing effort to familiarise our readers with these gadgets, we wil take a look at the Nokia Lumia 920 that sports an 8 megapixel camera, in a review focussed mainly con the Smartphones photographic features. The Lumia 920 was the winner of the Reader's Choice Smartphone of the Year in the Engadget Awards 2012. Design and Build Quality The Lumia 920 is solidly built with a seamless design using polycarbonate Ithas only one siot for inserting the Micro SIM card. The device features an integrated battery, which gets rid of the necessity to open its back. This way, there are less chances of dust and water damaging the contact points and internal circuitry. With dimensions of 1303x708. 107 mm and a weight of 185g, we feel the device is rather chunky and heavy for a Smartphone Key Features The Nokia Lumia 920 runs on the Windows Phone 8 operating system Ie features a 1.5 GHz Qualeoram Snapdragon S4 dual core processor. This uses a unique asynchronous technology, allowing each core to power up and power down independently, conserving battery power. The display is a 45-inch (97 x 58mm) TrueColour (24bit) IPS panel Ithasa Coming Gorilla Glass sculpted glass screen, whichis scratch and shock resistant, The monitor uses Super sensitive touch technology employing PureMotion HD+ display, which, Nokia claim, isthe worlds brightest, fastest, and most sensitive touchscreen. The display features 1280 x 768 pixel (WXGA) resolution, The main camera uses a 1/3.2-inch PureView sensor with 87 million effective pixels, itis coupled with a Carl Zeiss Tessar 26mm $2.0 (xed aperture lens with a minimum focus distance of 8 cm, featuring ‘Optical Image Stabilisation. The camera uses a two-stage capture key which uses half-press to Autofocus Sensitivity «an be changed from ISO 100 to 800 with an Auto option. White Balance options are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, and Incandescent. The Lumia 920 includes six Scene modes such as Auto, Night Portrait, Sports, Night, Close-up, and Backlight. There are four additional ‘lens’ options (we are not sure why Nokia calls them ‘lens) such as Cinemagraph, Bing Vision, Smart Shoot, and Panorama, Cinemagraph is an interesting feature, which records a video and displays a stil frame. You Smartphone Review a Nokia Lumia 920 can selectively make a part the image ‘move in the stil image, For example, iF you capture a portrait witha flutering curtain in the background, you can make the curtain fluter inthe stil portrait with the rest of the frame stationary. Bing Vision allows you to scan bar codes using the camera Smart Shoot is similar to burst mode. It captures. series of images from which you can select the best. Panorama, as the name indicates, helps you create panoramas, Ithasan interesting alignment feature. The frame wil show two circles which are to be aligned to get the perfect panorama, The camera features a short pulse high power dual LED flash, which has an operating distance of 3.0m. ‘The Lumia 920 features a secondary camera (front-facing) that reproduces images with a resolution of 1280 x 960 pirels. This camera has a fixed aperture of 124, Stil mages are recorded in JPEG format while videos are recorded in MP4H.264 format. The device features PureView technology, which allows you to take blur free images even in low light. The 920 has builtin location features such as A-GPS, Glonass, Cellular and W-Fi network positioning, and Magnetometer It also features various cation and navigation apps such as Here Drive, Here Maps, Here Transit, and Here City Lens, These features enable turn-by-tum navigation, offline maps, speed limit warnings, and street View. The device comes loaded with Microsoft Office suite, which, along with cloud storage, makes ita very good ‘option for professionals who need to manage data on the move. The Smartphone sports 1GB RAM and 32GB internal memory It does not accept external storage cards, but provides access to Skydive, a doud storage platform with 7 CB of free online storage space. The device is powered by a 2000 mAb integrated (it cannot be removed) battery pack, and accepts a single Micro SIM for communication. The device features wireless charging with a compatible charger, and supports Wii along with a hotspot feature Ergonomics Being more familar with the Android 05, we found the Lumia 920 to be as complicated as the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The tile-format widgets look a litle complicated, but you could get familiar with it in a matter Of days. We wish that we had a few more months to explore Windows Phone 8 to discover any gems hidden within, We were quite wrong in our presumption that Windows Phone 8 0S probably did not have many apps In fact, the app Novary of Window: z 8 = Smartphone Review Nokia Lumia 920 Bis as extensive as that of Android Many Android apps are available as compatible add-ons in the Windows store. Having said that, the camera and other features are quite refreshing and user-friendly. We did face some connectivity issues while tying to sync data with a Windows XP machine. Also, the battery capacity seemed insufficient for cloud-based operations Performance This performance test largely caters to the photography aspect. But the review of a Smariphone is incomplete without ‘mentioning the phone features. So we intend to broadly touch upon those features as well. The Nokia Luria 920 isa sophisticated Smartphone that is based, largely on cloud and social networking features. Most features of the device requites you to connect to a Nokia or Microsoft account, unllke in Android or other devices. The camera was good for evenly lt subjects, but we felt the dynamic range \was too low for subjects with high- contrast, as expected from small sensor sporting over 8 million photosites, In low light, we saw lot of nolse even at ISO 100, which was also along expected lines, The camera has a fixed aperture, which can cause overexposure if you Use manual ISO settings outdoors. The camera produced images with print size of 8.16 x 10.88 inches at 300 pi. However, if you use the pinch- and-20om feature (digital zoom), the size will be reduced. Skydrive cloud storage proved very useful since you can set the device to upload images Immediately after capture. Please note that if you set the camera to upload the images automatically, the images will be uploaded in low-resolution, Most Panorama images were rendered wel, but a few of them had imperfections in stitching For best results, use the camera in Auto mode (with Auto White Balance and Auto ISO) and do not expect the Lumia 920 to replace your camera, especially under low light. Videos were of good quality, though we wish the device had optical zoom, However, continuous focussing in the video mode Is very useful Value For Money The Lumia 920 retalsat an MRP of Rs 38,199, At this price, the Smartphone is good value for money with 32GB internal storage KEY SPECIFICATIONS (Opening Seen Windus hone 8 Deplaysse 45 nc 87xS8rm) Proxeon Srapetagen Dale 15 Gre Dapliyesciion : WAGACT2804 768) Deplrycolous Teal ber) Apecens 89 Deplatedncogy PS Touchsceen Siperseratve tour Man camer sense: 87 mel Pe Mancaren Ago aswahtwesape cape foasype ly Lene Corleone Serer se er fourber a0 Fal lngh 2am Mnenmboasonge: Bem Ingefomst JPEG Faroe Shor pus hghpover dl ED Flehopeingrage: 30m Flahredes "Off utomate,On Man amen etues Touch oxi ackape rent, zoandrsnial te ance Sb nage eden, Coote Opal iagestleaton Tue 159 0, Ree kde dunated nage CConerackions — Cheraigapleng lrg ven Sart Shoe Pancras ens Copremodes —:Vieo Stl Scenerodes Agora, Ng Pota Spor git Coen cig Whiebdanee —< Coit cards, oes, Dog Astor Lgtsenimy 180 190 50 800, Aoman, 150200 50400 Seconchrycamen.: 1280190 pols reohnon stot Sheth 30 wor \WLANTEEE602 1 ag Mazdia peed: ERS 2368 bps TEDL: 190 ‘Mops UL: 50M, WCDMA: HSDFA-422 Nps UL HSUPA. 576M Bareycapsay +2000 mn Femevablebatery : No Mireleschagng Yee Merexy RAM 1 CB Masmemory 328 Freedaudnerge 78, Denensons + 1308708, 107mm Wet 15g Es ETS | Seer ie eer [lester epeciynsticen | FINALSCORE —__ cago TE aT fecmnce ETE aeons EE [GrandTetal ETD) Lote ‘Windows Phone 8 Smartphone eres ee philosophy. Similar manipulation was also done by the Communist regime in Soviet Russia. The only difference now isthat, wath film, ‘manipulation was limited to the dark room; with digital manipulation, it s widely avalable to everyone and ts nefarious Users are becoming faly widespread Isallimage-manipulation bad? The answer, clearly, sno. With manipulation software, itis very easy to remove dirt rmarks and other blemishes from images. This clearly is acceptable. However, if image manipulation is done to indude elements not existing inthe original scene, the photographer must honesty admit that and clearly mention that the image has been digitally manipulated. The sue of manipulation of pictures has, for sorne time, been a great concer for the insurance industry In Europe andl ‘Amerca, many insurance dlaims have bbeen rejected after it was found that photographic images had been retouched aging & Man in order to enhance the complesty of the dei Digital manipulation has aso entered the field of scientific research papers where authors have submitted microscopic images that have been doctored to confirm the results In recent years, photo contests have ako los their edge andl many contestsnow stipulate that manipulated images will not be eligble for awards, Efforts to detect doctored images have started bearing frut Silicon valley companies have started selling an add-on software which can tell whether the image has come straight from the camera or has been manipulated. However, counterfeiters have gone a step ahead and developed measures to make sure that the detection software is easily fooled! In January 2013, the Israeli Government passed a new law making itillegal to use manipulated images in advertisements, without printing a disclosure on the picture. Similar legislation is on the anvil in several other countries. Obviously, digital manipulation of images isa complex area in camera digital manipulation is clearly acceptable but manipulation using imaging software is nat. We are stil to hear the last word on the subject. AAs for manipulation of video images, high quality computer graphics can make the impossible believable.
