1 Scope
T h i s E u r o p e a n S t a n d a r d d e s c r i b e s the reference m e t h o d , u s e d for type testing a n d in c a s e of d i s p u t e , for determination of the f l a k i n e s s index of a g g r e g a t e s . F o r other p u r p o s e s , in particular production control, other m e t h o d s m a y b e u s e d , provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established. T h i s E u r o p e a n S t a n d a r d a p p l i e s to natural, manufactured or recycled a g g r e g a t e s . T h e test procedure specified in this part of this E u r o p e a n S t a n d a r d is not applicable to particle s i z e s less than 4 m m or greater than 100 m m .

For the p u r p o s e s of this d o c u m e n t , the following terms a n d definitions apply.

Principle

T h e test c o n s i s t s of two s i e v i n g o p e r a t i o n s . First, using test s i e v e s , the s a m p l e is s e p a r a t e d into v a r i o u s particle s i z e fractions dJD a s given in T a b l e 1. E a c h of the particle s i z e fractions dJD is then s i e v e d u s i n g bar s i e v e s w h i c h h a v e parallel slots of width D,/2.

T h e o v e r a l l f l a k i n e s s index is c a l c u l a t e d a s the total m a s s of particles p a s s i n g the bar s i e v e s e x p r e s s e d a s a p e r c e n t a g e of the total dry m a s s of particles tested. If required, the f l a k i n e s s index of e a c h particle s i z e fraction dJD is calculated a s the m a s s of particles p a s s i n g the c o r r e s p o n d i n g bar s i e v e , e x p r e s s e d a s a percentage by m a s s of that particle s i z e fraction.

A l l a p p a r a t u s s h a l l c o n f o r m to the g e n e r a l requirements of E N 9 3 2 - 5 . 5.1 Test sieves, with s q u a r e apertures, conforming to E N 9 3 3 - 2 with the following aperture s i z e s : 100 m m ; 8 0 m m ; 6 3 m m ; 5 0 m m ; 4 0 m m ; 31,5 m m ; 2 5 m m ; 2 0 m m ; 16 m m ; 12,5 m m ; 10 m m ; 8 m m , 6,3 m m ; 5 m m and 4 m m . 5.2 Corresponding bar sieves, c o m p r i s i n g parallel cylindrical bars conforming to the requirements in T a b l e 1. T h e t o l e r a n c e s on the width of slot shall apply to the entire length of e a c h slot. A n e x a m p l e of a bar s i e v e is s h o w n in F i g u r e 1.

6 Preparation of test portions
T h e laboratory s a m p l e shall be r e d u c e d in a c c o r d a n c e with E N 9 3 2 - 2 . T h e m a s s of the test portion shall be a s specified in E N 9 3 3 - 1 . Dry the test portion at (110 t 5) C to constant m a s s . A l l o w to c o o l , w e i g h a n d record the m a s s a s M .

Procedure Sieving on test sieves

U s i n g the appropriate r a n g e of s i e v e s from those specified in 5 . 1 , s i e v e the test portion a s s p e c i f i e d in E N 933-1. W e i g h a n d d i s c a r d all particles p a s s i n g the 4 m m s i e v e a n d retained on the 100 m m s i e v e .
