DLSU Alumni Divers Reef Check

Over the past 30 years, coral reefs in the Philippines have been slowly dying. The most productive reef areas in the world are now known as some of the most endangered. Coastal development, sedimentation, dynamite

and cyanide fishing, overfishing, pollution and global warming have all contributed to the damage. The good news is that Reef Check has shown that it is not too late! Together we can reverse the decline of the coral reef health and productivity within as little as one year. (source: http://reefcheckphilippines.org/) The Advancement & Alumni Affairs Office is organizing a Reef Check orientation on February 22, 2014. The day trip features a 1-hour orientation & discussion on Reef Check and the state of our coral reef system. The highlight of the trip is the 45-minute dive to showcase the actual state of our coral reefs in the area. It will be conducted by Dr. Al Licuanan, a noted marine biologist and Course Director of Reef Check Philippines together with Ms. Carina Escudero, certified eco-diver course trainer. The training venue will be at the Brother Alfred Shields Marine Station of the De La Salle University in Sitio Matuod, Lian, Batangas. The registration fee of Php 1,000 covers the transportation from DLSU to the marine station and back plus the dive and meals. The Advancement and Alumni Affairs Office will have its 1st Reef Check Project at Lian Batangas on February 22, 2014 (Saturday).
