WELCOME NOTE
Welcome to Manila and to the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014! In partnership with the Philippine government (specially the Dept of Tourism, Dept of Energy and the City of Manila), we are delighted to be hosting the fifth leg of Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014 from February 6-9 and welcome all the student teams from various countries in Asia and the Middle East. This is a great privilege and we are honoured to host the competition this year which coincides with the celebration of Shells 100 years in the Philippines. There will be a number of firsts for this event. For the first time since its introduction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the SEM Asia competition will take place at the very heart of a bustling city, the City of Manila, which will give it a different flavour, more spectators and more excitement. In addition, the Shell Energy Lab and the Shell Powering Progress Together (PPT) Forum will be held for the first time in Asia. The Shell Energy Lab offers an exciting journey into the future of energy while the Powering Progress Together Forum will gather some 350 thought leaders from the public, private, and civil society sectors in a one-day event to tackle and explore strong partnerships and address the challenges on what is known as the Stress Nexus which relates to the interrelationships of the vital resource systems of energy, water, and food. The Shell Eco-marathon is more than just a global mileage competition as it is Shells biggest educational platform, to generate awareness and push the boundaries of energy efficiency and sustainable mobility among young and talented students who will be the future scientists, engineers and technology innovators. Heres to the success of the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia, Shell Energy Lab, and Powering Progress Together Forum in our centennial year and we hope that you find these events exciting, inspiring and truly enjoyable! We want you to experience Philippine hospitality and realise that its more fun in the Philippines! Congratulations to all of you and Mabuhay! Edgar O. Chua Country Chairman Shell companies in the Philippines

In 2014, Shell Eco-marathon Asia will feature a unique additional event for the first time, the Shell Energy Lab, an interactive exhibit that offers people of all ages a captivating and educational adventure into the future of energy, technology and mobility. Teams will be offered free access to an event packed with exciting attractions on Saturday, 8th February at 6 pm. The Shell Energy Lab comprises a substantial number of interactive displays and exhibits such as the: 1. Energy Globe Screening Room an awe-inspiring theatre-style experience showing the film entitled The World Now and in 2050 to make visitors appreciate the fact that they are building their world. 2. Stress Nexus Voting Game a highly-interactive quiz that challenges participants to answer questions relating to the interdependency of food, energy and water, drawn from an existing National Geographic Quiz. 3. Energy Mix Interactive Area physical interactives that showcase the range of global energy sources, including wind, wave, solar, ethanol, nuclear, coal, oil, electric shock and LNG. 4. Kinetic Energy Dance Floor a dance floor that converts human kinetic energy to electrical energy. The dance floor works like a large touch screen that accumulates and gathers information on the movement of dancers, producing enough energy to take a picture. 5. Energy Generators a challenge that allows participants to feel how much energy is needed to power our lives. Participants are challenged to run like a hamster inside energy zorbs to generate as much energy as possible. 6. Malampaya Area an exhibit that offers an Augmented Reality Table for visitors to experience the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project. It features exhibits about the state-of-the-art deep water technology that draws natural gas from deep beneath Philippine waters. 7. Shell Innovation Area an exhibit that details the rig to road process using innovative technology. 8. Shell Centennial Area features a sliding LED screen that reveals a timeline of Shells presence and milestones in the Philippines for the past 100 years. 9. From Rig to Road Area an exhibit that focuses on Retail and Commercial Fuels technology 10. Planet You an exhibit that lets participants control the flow of food, energy, water and the energy mix in their own world that will supposedly depict what his/ her world will look like in the year 2050. 11. Mini Shell Eco-marathon an exhibit that enables visitors to customize the mini SEM car they received at the registration and race their mini cars at a special track.
