What key warnings do I need to know about before using this drug?
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with other drugs. They can cause bad side effects. This is one of those drugs. Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take. Please read the medication guide.

When is it not safe to use this drug?


If you have an allergy to lopinavir, ritonavir, or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

What is this drug used for?


It is used to treat HIV infection.

How does this drug work?

Lopinavir works to harm the virus and fight the infection. Ritonavir raises the levels of lopinavir in the blood.

How is this drug best taken?


To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses. Swallow tablet whole. Do not chew, break, or crush. There is a liquid (solution) if you cannot swallow pills. Take liquid with food; tablets may be taken with or without food. Those who have feeding tubes may also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after this drug is given.

What do I do if I miss a dose? (does not apply to patients in the hospital)


Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

Are there any precautions when using this drug?


Do not run out of this drug. If you have high blood sugar (diabetes), talk with your doctor. This drug may raise blood sugar. If you have heart disease, talk with your doctor. If you have hemophilia, talk with your doctor. If you have high cholesterol, talk with your doctor. If you have liver disease, talk with your doctor. If you have had an irritated pancreas, talk with your doctor. Have your blood work checked often. Talk with your doctor. Check all drugs you are taking with your doctor. This drug may not mix well with some other drugs. To protect from diseases caused by having sex, use a latex condom. Use birth control that you can trust to stop pregnancy in HIV disease. Do not use a hormone-related kind of birth control. Do not breast-feed if you have HIV disease and live in the U.S. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant.

What are some side effects of this drug?


High cholesterol level. High triglyceride level. Headache. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Belly pain. Loose stools. Change in body fat. Feeling tired or weak. Harm to the liver may rarely happen.

When do I need to call my doctor?


If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad belly pain. A fast heartbeat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Very upset stomach or throwing up. More trips to the bathroom, more thirst, or weight loss. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

How do I store and/or throw out this drug?


Store tablets at room temperature. Protect tablets from water. Do not store in a bathroom or kitchen.

Store liquid (solution) in a refrigerator or at room temperature. If stored at room temperature, throw away any part not used after 2 months. Protect solution from heat.

General drug facts


If you have a very bad allergy, wear an allergy ID at all times. Do not share your drugs with others and do not take anyone elses drugs. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets. Most drugs may be thrown away in household trash after mixing with coffee grounds or kitty litter and sealing in a plastic bag. In Canada, take any unused drugs to the pharmacy. Keep a list of all your drugs (prescription, natural products, vitamins, OTC) with you. Give this list to your doctor. Call your doctor for help with any side effects.
