“You follow the fundamentals
in winemaking and generally
speaking, you’ll do fine,” says
Mike. “But there are a lot of
things, a lot of components to it
as well. We get great complexity
for example,” Mike continues,
“from the yeasts we choose. I can
create different tastes and get
different results not just from the
fruit, but from the yeasts we use
as well.”
The Browns are also focused
on aging their wines properly
and the ’07s are just about ready
for release. In March of this year

many wines will be released at

Cantara’s popular Petie Sirah,

Part of the success of Cantara’s

Halter Ranch Vineyard – Green Practices & Gold Medals

While history runs deep through the Halter Ranch Vineyard prop-
erty – with its 1885 Victorian farmhouse and link to Paso Robles
history – 2009 brings a new designation for the property, new recog-
nitions for quality and a renewed commitment to producing environ-
ment- and palate-friendly wines.
Halter Ranch is one of only fourteen vineyards to receive the
Sustainability in Practice, or SIP, designation. SIP is an independent
certification recognizing sustainably farmed vineyards. In order to
qualify for vineyard certification, growers must farm in a way that
protects both the natural and human resources as outlined in a strin-
gent set of standards developed by the Central Coast Vineyard Team
in collaboration with wine growers and more than 30 state, federal,
environmental, social, agricultural and university representatives.

Sculpterra Winery
With its spectacular sculpture gardens featuring larger-than-life
bronze and granite works that include a prancing horse and a
prowling feline, the Sculpterra Winery Tasting Room quickly grabbed
attention in the Paso Robles wine region.
“We wanted to bring something new to the area by combining
outdoor art and the vineyard,” said Paul Frankel, the assistant wine-
maker and son of owner Dr. Warren Frankel.
Although the winery is only a year old, the Frankel family has
owned the gorgeous 90-acre ranch in the Linne Valley east of Paso
Robles for nearly 30 years. A pistachio orchard was planted before the
vineyards, and bowls of the estate-grown nuts are on the tasting
room’s attractive stained concrete bar.
The warmly-decorated tasting room, featuring a number of minia-
ture sculptures that are each for sale, was once a welding shop itself.
African mahogany double doors provide access to the barrel room,
while there is plenty of wood and stone throughout the room. Large
windows provide glimpses of an outdoor picnic area, which includes
a 10-ton granite sculpture of a stalking cat.
Fine Wine…
While the sculpture gardens are worthy of a visit by themselves,
Friendl y P eo ple Sculpterra’s wines are also turning heads.
Open Daily 11-5 Cabernet Sauvignon is its flagship varietal, said the younger
4295 Union Road Frankel, with both the 2005 and 2006 vintages capturing gold
805-237-8884 medals. Besides the Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate vineyards include
www.riosecowine.com plantings of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, Petite
Sirah and Viognier.
Winemaker Shannon O’Neill has also crafted a pair of award-
winning red blends, “Statuesque” and “Maquette,” a French word
which translated means “little statue.”
The Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden is at 5125 Linne
Road just east of Paso Robles. The tasting room is open Thursday
through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s closed Thanksgiving,
Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter.
More information is available by calling 1-888-302-8881, or visit
