District attorney delivers keynote USC speech

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey delivered the keynote speech at a USC Gould School of Law gala that launched the schools $150 million fundraising campaign. More than 200 people, including the schools alumni, faculty and student leaders, attended the Feb. 6 event at downtown Los Angeles Vibiana, a former cathedral church building. In her speech, Lacey, who graduated from USC Gould in 1982, described her time at the law school as the foundation of her career and its alumni network as an integral part of her transition into the legal profession. The law schools initiative will raise money to provide student scholarships, attract faculty and create a collaborative learning space. It is part of USCs capital campaign to raise $6 billion in private philanthropy by 2018. Kylie Reynolds

Long Beach Bar Foundation celebrates milestone

Roughly 85 members and sponsors of the Long Beach Bar Foundation gathered Jan. 26 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the groups Shortstop program, aimed at diverting at-risk and delinquent youth and supporting their families. Singled out for special awards were past presidents of the Long Beach Bar Association, Frank R. Newall and Vern D. Schooley, who were recognized for their support and dedication to making a difference in the lives of young people. The juvenile detention program involves first time offenders as well as their parents or guardians, who participate in several courtroom sessions in which volunteer legal professionals and parolees dramatize the negative effects of a life of crime.
