Heres What We Are Planning March 22 Annual Ontario Heritage Historic Walking Tour April (Date TBA)- 2nd quarter meeting & potluck, open to all. May-Model Colony Awards. We will be there to greet the winners. May 31-Fundraiser to restore an historic structure in downtown Ontario. Join us for an evening of fun sipping wine and raising funds. June 7-We will have an information booth at the Kiwanis Annual Pancake Breakfast & Rotary Club Car Show to promote Ontario Heritages mission and events. July 4-Ontario Heritage will again accept donations for bottled water, canned sodas, prepackaged individual snacks before & during the Independence Day Parade on Euclid Avenue in the Delmans front yard. All donations will be used to further historic preservation. July (Date TBA)-3rd quarter meeting & potluck, open to all. October 11-Ontario Heritages 5th annual historic cemetery tour at Bellevue Memorial Park. November (Date TBA)4th quarter meeting & potluck, open to all. December 6-Ontario Heritage will again have an information booth at the Christmas on Euclid event.

Question: What is a Mills Act Contract? Answer: A Mills Act Contract is a contract between the owner of a designated historical resource and the City of Ontario. All properties within the City of Ontario that have been designated as Local Historic Landmarks, contributing structures in Designated Local Historic Districts and properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places or the California Register of Historic Resources are eligible for Mills Act Contracts, pursuant to the provisions of Article 12, Section 50280 through Section 50289, Chapter 1, Part 1, Title 5, of the California Government Code. The purpose of a Mills Act Contract is to provide property tax relief for historic properties in return for the owners of the property maintaining and preserving the historic character of the property.

Please mark your Calendars for March 22 when we will be holding our annual walking tour which starts promptly at 10 a.m. ending at 12 noon. This year the tour is in the Historic Armsley Square District. We will find out how it all began with John S. Armstrong and learn about the original owners of the homes. You wont want to miss this event! We will continue to have quarterly meetings and potlucks. Our goal is to have them at different historic venues each quarter.

Please know that you do not have to own or rent a historic home to become a member of Ontario Heritage. Maybe you grew up here and moved away but still have an interest in Ontario. Maybe you recently moved to Ontario and dream of someday owning a historic home or you have lived here for years and are just interested in historic preservation. Mills Act contracts are for a period of 10 years and are automatically renewed unless a notice of nonrenewal is submitted. With a notice of non-renewal the contract will be terminated at the end of the 10 year period. Any cancellation of a Mills Act contract is subject to a penalty of 12 percent of the assessed market value of the property. When will the savings be reflected in my Tax bill? It can take up to 18 months from the time the application is submitted until you see the savings. All contracts recorded during the Calendar Year (from January 1st until December 31st) go into effect during the next years tax cycle. It soon became known as Southern Californias Model Colony because of the Chaffeys innovative ideas. In recognition of this, the Ontario City Library established the Model Colony History Room in 1970. The Room contains reference materials concerning the social, economic, and governmental history of Ontario and the western region of San Bernardino County Many of these materials date back to the founding of the colony. In November 2004, the city recognized former mayor Robert E. Ellingwoods tireless efforts in preserving the history of Ontario by renaming the Librarys Model Colony History Room the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room Some of the materials youll find in the Model Colony History Room include: Records relating to Armstrong Nurseries, the General Electric Hotpoint Works plant, and the Ontario Motor Speedway, as well as many smaller collections of business and personal records. Architectural surveys of many older Ontario homes and buildings. Yearbooks for Chaffey High School, Ontario High School, Colony High School, and scattered editions of Upland High School. Local newspapers on microfilm, 1882present. Local census records on microfilm, 1860 -1930. Books, journals, and magazines related to the local area and general California history. We also have materials available online! Looking for an obituary, marriage record, or birth record? Want to peruse some old All States Picnic artifacts?
