Intersymbol Interference (ISI)

Abstract The principal objective of the experiment is to understand Inter-Symbol Interference and how to deal with it. In order to understand well, we write the MATLAB code to understand Inter-Symbol Interference. Then, we observe the result in eye diagram. Introduction The aim of this experiment is to learn Inter-Symbol Interference. ISI is a form of distortion of a signal in which one symbol interferes with subsequent symbols. We examine this technique in MATLAB. This experiment is important because in digital communication Inter-Symbol Interference is very important in this laboratory we examine this process. Experimental Procedure In this experiment we generate a signal with length of M=16which is QAM modulated. At the beginning, we take sampling frequency, Fs= 10 KHz and Fd = 1KHz. By using quammod and scatterplot, we can easily observe the response of signal. Then, we construct a raise cosine filter and filtered this signal by raise cosine filter. Then this output signal is truncated by discarding initial samples having length of propagation delay which is evaluated multiplying 3 by Fs/Fd. Then observed the response in the eye diagram. Finally, we add Gaussian noise to this signal. Then we observe the response of this signal in the eye diagram

1) If we apply 4 QAM, we have less BER so less ISI effect. I think that, sensitivity to offset in 4 QAM decreases because of having less ISI. 2) SNR is important parameter in observing eye pattern. SNR must be high to observe eye pattern clearly. Because in low SNR, eye pattern has more noise, so it is so hard to see obvious eye pattern. Conclusion In conclusion, I want to mention shortly about what we have done in this laboratory. Our work consists of 8 part. At the beginning we took the sampling rate and other values and constructed a raised cosine filter. And then we observed the eye diagram of the output for 16QAM and for 4-QAM, and for no offset and offset=2 values. After that, we added White Gaussian Noise to the output of the raised cosine filter and repeated the same procedure for this signal. The results, figures and comments about the results can be seen in the parts above. The most important benefits of this laboratory experiment are we learned the quantization process. With help of MATLAB, we simulated this operation. This is very useful because we can saw the important of ISI. The commands which are I learned in previous laboratory, thanks to this laboratory I remember them and I learned different command like quammod, scatterplot.
