Your brain is wallowing in a thick cloud of Who cares? and Why bother? so focusing on the subject is getting more and more impossible with every passing second. The solution is as easy as giving yourself a reward of something you do like after a successful study session. Set a goal that defines your success, it could be as easy as I need to learn 25 new facts from Chapter 10. Then, set your reward: If I do it, I can watch a movie/shoot some hoops/play some XBOX. If you give yourself a reward for good behavior, youll be more likely to offset the boredom by anticipating something fun. 2 Youre wired! Youre fidgety. You want to run. You dont want to sit inside and study! The solution is to plan ahead! Exercise before a study session, or better yet record your notes to your iPod and you can listen while you ride a bike or go for a walk! 3. Youre tired! The only thing on your mind is sleep. You can feel that cozy pillow beneath your head with a quilt pulled up to your chin. There is more than one solution here. First, how about a power nap, just 20 minutes or so can energize you enough to get your work done. If a power nap is out of the question, get up and go for a brisk 10

minute walk. Exercise may tire the body but it sure revs up the brain! 4. Youre busy. Ever feel like youre drowning in everything that needs to be done? Between classes, friends, jobs, clubs, you just cant concentrate on studying without thinking of all the other things you need to be doing. The solution will take a bit more of your time, but the best way to manage studying in the midst of chaos is to take a half hour and set a study schedule for the week. 5. Youre distracted. You keep getting Facebook alerts on your phone. Your friends are laughing across the room. The guy at the next table is just plain LOUD. The solution is simple. Find a different place to study somewhere quiet and cell phone free. Info from http://testprep.about.com

UB NEWS
At our last UB Saturday, we were fortunate enough to have Reverend James Nadeau as a guest speaker. Father Jim is a TRIO Alum who spoke of his journey through education and the opportunities he took advantage of in Upward Bound along the way. While he was there, he also received the Alumni Award from the Maine Educational Opportunity Association (MEEOA). MEEOA is an organization for TRIO professionals in Maine, and every year they award a former TRIO participant for educational accomplishments and contributions to the community. Presenting his award is Michelle Richards, UB advisor and committee chair of the MEEOA Nominations Committee. An engaging speaker, Father Jim, a graduate of Caribou High School who speaks 12 languages, gave our students some sage advice about travel not to travel is like reading only one page of a book! We agree! Carpe Diem!
