Even before 2008’s political advertising
launched we were inundated with two to
three thousand messages a day. Turning
off the TV won’t make it go away. It’s on
the radio, in the newspaper, on your
computer, in your mailbox, on signs,
clothing…even this newsletter.
The bigger the crowd of advertisers,
the louder the noise, the harder to hear
and the less people care about the mes-
sages being sent. The competition is less
other companies and more the noise,
itself. In sanity’s self-defense, our ears
are closing.

there’s a lot to go around. But you will
get to know people faster working on a
project than sharing a lunch table once
a month. And getting to know people IS
networking.

surprised how often they are asked, “Do
you know anyone who…?”
Attend the luncheon meetings
every second Monday of the
month. And bring a guest. You prob-
ably owe someone lunch anyway…
Attend a networking event and
bring those business cards!
Follow up events with phone
calls or handwritten
notes. If you can’t bring
yourself to do that, then
e-mail. But more personal

Put an insert into the
chamber newsletter.
Nearly 1,000 of those go
out every month and it’s the best value
in town for business-to-business adver-
tising: 1,000 8.5” x 11” full-color glossy
advertisements (two-sided, if you like)
for a couple of hundred bucks plus
printing…
If that list sounds like work, it is. But a
small business owner’s life is mostly work
anyway—so invest some of it into mak-
ing all the other hours more profitable.
