Clinical trial with Sebazole, a keratolytic, keratoplastic, antibacterial, antifungal and antipruritic shampoo for dogs and cats1
INTRODUCTION
This study was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of Sebazole during its use on dogs and cats under the conditions of usual veterinary practice and to also assess its acceptability by the veterinarian and the pet owners.
METHOD
Fifteen dogs of varying breeds and ages, and 2 cats were selected. The animals were selected based on the presence of seborrhoea with or without the following: superficial pyoderma or dermatophyte infection or yeast infection and / or pruritus After selection the animals were washed at the veterinary clinic using Sebazole. The pet owner repeated treatments at home. Efficacy was assessed by observing the skin condition after shampooing, both immediately after the initial treatment and again after several days of usage of the product. The response was rated as poor, moderate, good or excellent. Safety was assessed by a standard clinical examination by the veterinarian, both immediately after the initial treatment and again after several days of usage of the product.

CONCLUSION
Sebazole shampoo was effective in treating flakey seborrhoea, crusty seborrhoea, odour, pruritus, pyoderma and dermatophyte infections in dogs and cats. The product was not used in a sufficient number of cases of yeast infections for its efficacy in this condition to be assessed. In addition, no adverse reactions were observed in any of the dogs or the cats in which the product was tested.
