Experiment 4 :
Magnitude of Fixing Moment
In a Continuous Beam

OBJECTIVE
The objective of the experiment is to determine the magnitude of the fixing moment in a
continuous beam by experiment and to compare this value with the value obtained
theoretically.

THEORY
Consider the beam shown below

W1

W2

B
L1/2

L1/2

C
L2/2

L2/2

The fixing moment at B is given by,

Equation 1
MB =

The three moment equation for a beam of constant cross-section is :

Equation 2
MA L1 + 2 MB (L1 + L2) + MC L2 =

We know that MA = MC = 0 and ;

PROCEDURE
1- Set up the apparatus
2- Zero the dial gauge by turning the bezel
3-Apply the load of 10N to W1 and 5 N to W2.
5- Adjust the spring balance by using the spring balance adjuster until the dial gauge reads
zero.
6-Note the spring balance reading .
7- Increase W1 by 10N and W2 by 5N and repeat the process. Repeat the weight increase
until W1 = 50 N.
8- Tabulate your results as below.

Then using the three moment equation and MA = MC = 0, calculate MB according to theory by
substituting the appropriate values into the equation.

QUESTION:
How well do your experimental and theoretical values of MB agree? Is the difference within
experimental error?

DISCUSSIONS
Do some discussion on the topics .

CONCLUSION
What can you conclude from the experiment?
