Since 1865, June 19 has been celebrated in TX as a day of freedom. It is a state holiday marked by picnics, parades, and family gatherings. It took effect when General Granger read the order in Galveston on June 19, 1865.

there were not enough soldiers to protect the scattered settlements this encouraged Indians to attack settlers and thus drove the frontier line eastward with the war ending, federal troops arrived to guard the Texas frontier not enough troops to protect the scattered frontier settlements
