THE GOAL BY E.M.GOLDRATT

SYNOPSIS
The Goal is a novel by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt, whose Theory of Constraints has become a model for systems management. The story is about Alex Rogo, who manages a production plant owned by UniCo Manufacturing, where everything is always behind schedule and things are looking dire. Bill Peach, a company executive, tells Alex that he has three months to turn around the operations of the plant. Jonah (a physicist), whom many believe represent Goldratt himself, helps him solve the company's problems through a series of telephone calls and short meetings. Meanwhile there is also an ocassional mention of Alexs personal life, which has been rough lately because of the heavy work load. This novel is a must read for all the managers, as it would surely help them in tackling their own issues. It is important for managers to understand the theory of constraints to identify the restrictions and hurdles concerned to various operations of a plant; so as to minimize or reverse their effects. It suggests that one should decide a fixed goal and all the aspects should be evaluated to check whether they are leading towards that goal or away from it. Alex realizes that making money is the ultimate goal for the comapany. He chalks down three measurements to develop operational rules for running his plant i.e. throughput, inventory and operational expense. And thus revolutionizes the whole system accordingly, to make the business profitable. The values imparted by this book are many. It brilliantly portrays an understandable method of analyzing a system to improve its performance by breaking down the problem into smaller parts and then approaching them individually. It demonstrates a method that can be easily applied and practiced in any organization or life. The details within the book are presented in a very simple and clear manner. The context is so transparent and flexible, that it can be used for other lines of business and is not limited to the operations of a manufacturing plant, which the story is based on. It remoulds the thought process of the reader and makes him think on similar lines.
