Modernism
Text Reference: (From: old age sticks by e.e. cummings) old age sticks up Keep Off signs)& youth yanks them down(old age cries No This example is important to the text because it emphasizes the cycle of youth to old and the author also emphasizes the difference between the youth and the old.

My Example Sentence:

Modernism refers to a time period of cultural crisis, which in turn awarded people the opportunity to explore new possibilities along with ideas.

Free Verse
Text Reference: (From: This is Just to Say by William Carlos Williams) I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold

In this example from the text the author just expresses the taste of the peaches that he ate and shows how forbidden things feel so good even though they arent good.

My Example Sentence:
Even though the poet used free verse, which uses no rhyme or rhyme scheme, the poem still had its own flow and poetic imagery.

Expatriates

Text Reference: (From: Olaudah Equiano)


The first object which saluted my eyes when I arrived on the coast was the sea, and a slave ship, which was then riding at anchor, and waiting for its cargo. These filled me with astonishment, which was soon converted into terror when I was carried on board. I was immediately handled and tossed up to see if I were sound by some of the crew; and I was now persuaded that I had gotten into a world of bad spirits, and that they were going to kill me.

In this example the author expresses his surprise at how he was placed upon a slave ship. This is very essential to the text because this is the starting point of his slavery and how he was taken away from his home.

My Example Sentence:

The man was expatriated from Africa so that he could serve as a slave.

Apostrophe

And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my

city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them: Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning. In this example from Chicago by Carl Sandburg, he is showing his pride in his home town stating that no other city can be compared to Chicago.

My Example Sentence:

The use of apostrophe in the poem emphasized the poets anger at his dead father for not being there for him as a child.

Imagism
Text Reference: (From: The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams) so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. This example is essential to the text because it helps the reader get a clear picture of what the red wheel looked like to also help the reader get a better understanding of the poem.

My Example Sentence:

Poets use imagism to stress the importance visual stimulation along with emotional thought and language.

Blank Verse

My Example Sentence

Blank verse is comprised of various verses that show no signs of rhyme and is often used with iambic pentameter.

Figurative Language

My Example Sentence:
Figurative language is often used to achieve a special effect or meaning on a set of words or phrases.

Personification
Text Reference: (From: Chicago by Carl Sandburg)
Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked,

sweating, proud to be Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation. In this example of personification the author is simply stating how important the city is and everything in it that helps make people feel safe inside the city.

My Example Sentence:

Personification is a very useful tactic used by poets to give inanimate objects (e.g. bears, cups, pillows, the sky) character, often giving them the ability to talk.
