Celsius Oval HSS

Technical Data
Corus Tubes manufactures its Celsius Ovals
in accordance with the technical delivery
requirements and the tolerances of ASTM
A501-07 and EN 10210, the European
Standard for hot finished hollow structural
sections. Celsius Ovals are supplied as
standard to impact quality J2 (20 ft-lb at 0F)
making them suitable for all internal and
external applications to the following American
Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
specifications:
Specification for Structural Steel
Buildings, March 9, 2005
Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel
Buildings, March 9 2005; Including
Supplement No. 1, November 16, 2005
Celsius Ovals are produced by the Electric
Weld (EW) process in sizes from 6 3 ins up
to 20 10 ins. Details of the sizes, thickness
and design strengths are shown in the
following pages.

Sizes and Geometric Properties
Geometric Properties

The current range of Celsius Ovals is given in

the table 1. Also included in this table are the
geometric properties which have been
calculated using the formulae given in EN
10210-2:2006(E) Hot finished structural hollow
sections of non-alloy and fine grain steels, Part
2: Tolerances, dimensions and sectional
properties.

Classification of Oval Sections

Celsius Ovals have been classified using the

limits contained in the AISC Specification for
Structural Steel Buildings ANSI/AISC 360-5 for
circular hollow sections (table B4.1), except
the noncompact limit in flexure has been
restricted to 0.16 E/Fy. However the definition
of the equivalent diameters De, in uniform
compression and in flexure about the minor
and major axes, has been derived to take
account of the continuously changing
curvature of an oval compared to that of a
circle.

Design Strengths
The design tensile, compressive, flexural and
shear strengths for Celsius Ovals have been
calculated according to the AISC Specification
for Structural Steel Buildings ANSI/AISC 36005, March 9, 2005.

Design Flexural Strength

The design flexural strength has been
calculated using bMn in accordance with
Chapter F with b = 0.9. For sections with
slender walls, the design strength has been
calculated using a modified version of the
critical stress formula given in Eq. F8-4, i.e.

Design Tensile and Compressive Strengths

The design tensile strength has been
calculated using tFyAg in accordance with
Chapter D with t = 0.9.

Fcr =

The design compressive strength has been

calculated using cFcrAg in accordance with
Chapter E with c = 0.9. For compact and
noncompact sections, the design strength
should be determined in accordance with Cl.
E3 whilst for slender sections, it should be
evaluated based on Cl. E7.

Design Shear Strength

The design shear strength has been calculated
using vVn in accordance with Chapter G with
v = 0.9.
The nominal shear strength Vn according to the
limit state of shear yielding has been
calculated using a modified version of the Vn
formula given in Eq. G6-1, i.e.

Design Compressive Strength for Flexural

Buckling of Columns
The design compressive strength for flexural
buckling of columns has been calculated using
cFcrAg in accordance with Chapter E with c =
0.9. No design compressive strengths have
been given for column slenderness ratios
above 200.

For shear along x-axis,

0.16E
D

Vn = FcrAg/3
For shear along y-axis,
Vn = 2FcrAg/3

6 Celsius Oval HSS sizes and Design Strengths AISC-LRFD version

Celsius Oval HSS

Design Strengths
Design Strengths for Concrete Filled
Sections
The design strengths have been
calculated in accordance with AISC
Specification for Structural Steel Buildings
ANSI/AISC 360-05, March 9, 2005.
The design compressive, flexural and
column compressive strengths of
concreted filled Celsius 355 Ovals are
given in table 3 for grade 40 compressive
strength concrete (fc = 40 N/mm2) and
table 4 grade 60 compressive strength
concrete (fc = 60 N/mm2).
No design strengths have been given for
D/t ratios above 0.15E/Fy (Cl. 2(a)).

Design Compressive Strength

The design compressive strength has
been calculated using cPn in accordance
with Chapter I, Cl. 2 with c = 0.75.
For steel sections that are slender, the
design compressive strength has been
calculated with proper allowance for
possible local buckling of the steel shell in
accordance with Chapter E.

Design Column Compressive Strength

The design column compressive strength
has been calculated using cPn in
accordance with Chapter I, Cl. 2 with c =
0.75.
Due to different resistance factors c
(LRFD) adopted for axially loaded steel
columns and composite columns - for
axially loaded steel columns, c is 0.9
(Chapter E, Cl. E1) whereas for axially
loaded composite columns, c is 0.75
(Chapter I, Cl. 1b) some composite
columns especially with stockiest steel
sections where the concrete contribution
may be relatively insignificant, but still
satisfy the composite design requirements
(Chapter E, Cl. 2a (1)), the compressive
strength calculated based on composite
design may be less than the compressive
strength of their associated steel columns,
in this case, the design column
compressive strength for the composite
columns have been taken as the same
strengths as for empty sections.

The influence of concrete confinement

given by Chapter I, Cl. 1a has not been
included in the design strength
calculations.

Design Flexural Strength

The design flexural strength has been
calculated in accordance with Chapter I, Cl.
3(b).
The flexural strength has been calculated
for the steel section alone assuming a
plastic stress distribution for compact
cross-sections.
Design flexural strengths for steel
classified as noncompact and slender
have been taken as the same strengths as
for empty sections.
