Section 9.6 Double Integrals

Problems 1-59 odd, 63, 65, 67, 69

Evaluate each integral.

1. 05(x4y+y)dx

3. 17x+6ydy

5. 45xx2+3ydy

7. 493+5yxdx

9. 26e2x+3ydx

11. 03ye4x+y2dy

Evaluate each iterated integral. (Many of these use results from 1-12)
13. 1205(x4y+y)dx dy

15. 0136xx2+3ydx dy

17. 12493+5yxdx dy

19. 1313dy dxxy

21. 2435xy+y3dx dy

Find each double integral over the rectangular region R with the given boundaries.
23. R(3x2+4y)dx dy;   0≤x≤3, 1≤y≤4

25. Rx+ydy dx;   1≤x≤3, 0≤y≤1

27. R3x+y2dy dx;   2≤x≤4, 1≤y≤6

29. Ryex+y2dx dy;   2≤x≤3, 0≤y≤2

Find the volume under the given surface z=f(x, y) and the rectangular with the given boundaries.
31.z=8x+4y+3;  -1≤x≤1, 0≤y≤3

33.z=x2;  0≤x≤2, 0≤y≤5

35.z=xx2+y;  0≤x≤1, 0≤y≤1

37.z=xyx2+y22;  1≤x≤2, 1≤y≤4

Although it is often true that a double integral can be evaluated by using either dx or dy first, sometimes one choice over the
other makes the work easier. Evaluate the double integrals in 39 and 40 in the easiest way possible.
39. Rxexydx dy;   0≤x≤2, 0≤y≤1

Evaluate each double integral.

41. 242x2(x2+y2)dy dx

43. 040xxydy dx

45. 262y4y1xdx dy

47. 041exxydy dx

Evaluate each double integral. If the function seems too difficult to integrate, try interchanging the limits of integration, as in
39 and 40.
49. 0ln2ey21lnxdx dy

Use the region R with the indicated boundaries to evaluate each double integral.
51. R(5x+8y)dy dx;   1≤x≤3, 0≤y≤x-1

53. R(4-4x2)dy dx;   0≤x≤1, 0≤y≤2-2x

55. Rex/y2dx dy;   1≤y≤2, 0≤x≤y2

57. Rx3ydy dx;  R bounded by y=x2, y=2x

59. Rdy dxy;  R bounded by y=x, y=1x, x=2

The idea of the average value of a function, discussed earlier for functions of the form y=f(x), can be extended to functions
of more than one independent variable. For a function z=f(x, y), the average value of ƒ over a region R is defined as
1ARfx, ydx dy
where A is the area of the region R. Find the average value for each function over the regions R having the given boundaries.
63. fx, y=x2+y2;  0≤x≤2, 0≤y≤3

65. fx, y=e2x+y;  1≤x≤2, 2≤y≤3

Business and Economics

67. Average Cost A company’s total cost for operating its two warehouses is
Cx, y=19x2+2x+y2+5y+100
dollars, where x represents the number of units stored at the first warehouse and y represents the number
units stored at the second. Find the average cost to store a unit if the first warehouse has between 40 and
80 units, and the second has between 30 and 70 units. (Hint: Refer to 62-65.)

69. Average Profit The profit (in dollars) from selling x units of one product and y units of a second
product is
P=-x-1002-y-502+2000
The weekly sales for the first product cart from 100 units to 150 units, and the weekly sales for the
second product vary from 40 units to 80 units. Estimate the average weekly profit for these two
products. (Hint: Refer to 62-65.)
