Our Vision
Create an Auckland Icon
To create the Southern Hemisphere’s most
beautiful train station, with optimum utility for
future generations.

(Parnell Station will be the fourth busiest urban

train station in Auckland - ARTA)
Our Vision
• Develop Parnell Station as a destination in its own
right.

• Retain the Mainline Steam building as the centrepiece

of the Parnell Station development!

• World-leading train station architect (Britomart)

believes this site is an AMAZING opportunity.

• Every city in Australasia would give their eye teeth to

develop something iconic here for future generations.

1888 Carriage Workshops building at Eveleigh
Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s adaptive reuse of the building as the
CarriageWorks Contemporary Arts Centre has embraced the
building’s past whilst providing it with a bold new future.
The centre includes three flexible theatre spaces, rehearsal
rooms, administrative offices, workshop space and amenities.
Imagine this in Parnell!
Highlight Heritage
Waipapa Stream’s rich history
• Protect and celebrate our unique landscapes, features and
history - the Waipapa Stream valley has been used and
abused for too long and the Domain disconnected from
Parnell.

• The Newmarket Station Building could be a focal point for

exploring the key role the Waipapa Stream played in
Auckland’s development.

• Build on the historic steam train presence in combination with

re-sited heritage Newmarket station.

• The next slide highlights the amazing history of this neglected

Parnell valley.

More Positives
• Electrification will remove any gradient issues
(current train hardware can handle the gradient).

• NZILA award-winning Boffa Miskell plan exists for

daylighting the Waipapa Stream and landscaping the
valley (ARC - initiated).

• Opportunity to create a gateway to The Domain

• Suggest minimal or no provision for car parking to

accentuate public transport and walk/ride focus
Current Status
• ARTA originally proposed a train station at Carlaw Park. New
options include a station midway between Mainline Steam &
original site, and another adjacent to Mainline Steam.
• Despite City Development Committee enthusiasm for Cheshire
Street site, FPF still shows a Parnell Train Station at the Carlaw
Park location – but it’s not yet included in the 10 Year Plan.
(Report requested by Cr Bhatnagar delayed and expected for
November 12 meeting.)
• ARC / Mike Lee 100% behind Waipapa Valley/Cheshire Street
location.
• Rodney Hide MP, Cr Ken Baguley and Hobson Community
Board briefed and supportive.
Future Status
• Commitment by Kiwi Rail, ARTA, ARC,ACC to Parnell
Train Station at Mainline Steam Site, Cheshire Street.

• Commitment to a heritage “destination” masterplan

for the Cheshire Street site in the District Plan.

• District Planning identification of the Parnell Train

Station at Cheshire Street NOT Heather Street.
Don’t say “No”

To say we have no
money is to say
we have
no vision or patience
An invitation
To create a
“destination” station
rather than a
train stop
A Commitment
To creativity
To community
To connectivity
To a new Auckland icon
