CRS RICE BOWL REFLECTION: KENYA

This week, CRS rice bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of Kenya. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic Social teaching principle, Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person, and reminded that our inherent dignity comes form our creation as children of God and not from any of our own actions. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Kenya and all around the world, that we may respect and uphold the sacredness of life and dignity of all people.

This is the opportunity you have been waiting for. Please sign up in the foyer of the church March 1-2 or March 8-9.

PASTORAL CORNER
March 9, 2014 The Super Bowl and the Academy Awards are behind us, in other words all those important things. Oh the importance of seeing and being see of trying to do what is never been done before. It is EGO on steroids. We vicariously watch maybe even pretend that we are a part of the glitter and glamour. In reality the closest we can get is a TV screen or by buying one of the 5 billion movie tickets that were sold last year. For a few minutes or a few hours we are distracted from real life. We are distracted from what we think is the humdrum of ordinary life. So often we settle for this, this make-believe stage of imaginary life. We settle for spectacle rather than the spectacular. Last Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we participated in the spectacle of ashes on our forehead. We can settle for the spectacle of ashes on our forehead or we can work for the suspect ocular that those ashes represents. The Paulist Young adult website busted Halo.com each year asks for people to send in photographs of the ashes on their four head. It's a fun thing to do and it should remind us to go deeper and explore what is behind the ashes. Many of the young people that contribute to our young adult website often share about going deeper into their faith and into their relationship with God. Lent isn't so much about doing extraordinary acts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving but more about making the ordinary extraordinary even more, lent is about taking our brokenness and transforming it into holiness. How do we begin this journey from brokenness to holiness? The first step is to enter into some kind of desert experience. This first step is reflected in the teachings of the prophets and in this weekends Gospel Jesus is lead by the Spirit into the desert. In His heart of hearts He knew that He had to go there, to a place of quiet, and solitude. It is in the land of sharp contrasts, where we can see with clarity of Ying/Yang, the light and shadow sides of our life that we can truly come to know who we are. This is the place where we can come to know our true identity in God. It is the place where we come to realize that it is not the spectacles we create that defines who we are, but the discovery of the spectacular that dwells deep within us that defines who we are. Some people choose to go into the desert others have it thrust upon them. I have often chosen to go into the desert, as many of you know Death Valley is one of my favorite places. Others have this land of stark contrast thrust upon them, through serious illness or some type of dramatic loss in their lives. About three weeks ago in the span of just three hours I went from having 2020 vision to be almost legally blind. I love to read, I love to drive and I love photography. All were taken away in a brief span of time. Gradually eyesight is returning and hopefully I will be able to read, drive and take photographs again. One of the early thoughts that I had was what's going to happen to me? Will I be okay? I discovered fairly quickly that I do to find myself by the things I'm able to do. I was, and I am, forced to go deeper to ask questions about my true identity. In nurturing my core identity, as a child of God, I have come to a sense of peace that I didn't think I could have. I don't want to suggest that I do this perfectly but it has been an interesting journey. Of course I am hoping that my eyesight will completely return, but I do have a certain peace about what the future may hold. I could've chosen to simply rant and rave about the current condition but in choosing to embrace it seems that I have chosen a path of brokenness to wholeness or holiness. This is the path that when set before all of us we can choose to do a spectacle or we can choose the harder work of finding the spectacular within us namely the spirit of the risen Jesus that lives within us.

Check the flyer on the bulletin board for information on how to schedule and appointment. POPE FRANCIS: If you haven't been to confession recently, don't wait. One may walk into the confessional with a heavy heart, but forgiveness brings freedom and lightness. If a lot of time has passed, don't lose even one more day. Go---the priest will be good. Jesus will be there and he's even nicer than the priest. Be courageous. Go to confession. Even just on a human level in order to vent, it's good to speak to a brother, confessing to the priest these things that weigh so heavily on your heart. Don't be afraid of confession." Pope Francis--- following up on talks about Baptism, Communion and Confirmation---said, Those sacraments give new life--- but sin eats away at that new life and can destroy it, which is why Jesus gave his disciples the power to forgive sins in the name of God and the Christian community. (At St.Philip Neri----Saturdays at 5pm or by appointment.)
